The GS prediction makes me feel less bad that I have an open hedged short position from back in the day when BTC was $3960.
@Mrpumperitis: Are you saying shit is about to hit the fan? When big money is at stake I trust nobody's opinion, only the facts count.
I do intend to catch that movement though if it actually DOES happen. We are not close to $4800 though. It might turn into a self-fulfilling prophecy if everyone gets scared as we approach it.

Now I understand why you would condone that +5% BTC drop...you are invested in BCH. I can give you my humble opinion. It looks like a squashed bug between two pages of a heavy book called Bitcoin.

I'd say we're overdue for 30% correction. But I don't condone it.
It would not surprise me..
I wouldn't even mind it tbh
Me neither, only what would trigger it?
Profit taking? Today one year ago Bitcoin was $580. That's 8X your money.

Profit taking would not trigger, you do that carefully, not to kill the goose with the golden eggs... .
I just thought about all the whales and if a big shot decides to liquidate his positions. But then again I don't know what the consequences would be.
What was that in January? Did the Chinese sell their Bitcoins because it was the new year? That was a ~30% correction and I was in the middle of it. If something like this happens again we have our impending doom moment.

Edit: It went down to $4760 and is now moving back up. I think this is what the Goldman Sachs fuss was all about. They were wrong imho and Bitcoin is now moving to $5k. That happened to me yesterday on Bitfinex and to make matters worst just after that the site went all glitchy while they updated some new features, couldn't log in for half hour and then when I did my balances all showed ZERO. Talk about a panic attack. Eventually the issue was resolved though.
Phew
Totally. When your balance shows zero the brain goes in overdrive: "Did I get hacked? Did one of my positions without a stop-loss go bust? SOMEBODY NEEDS TO DO SOMETHING!". Usually you're just logged into a guest account or something. Or the data didn't load. But when you can make money at the click of a button you can also lose money at the click of a button, too.

That's a perfectly valid thought you are having. If I had a house I'd sleep in a tent for a while while, sell the house and through the magic of Bitcoin wake up in a mansion a while later.
Certainly not selling a single Satoshi at this point. Even if debt collectors punch my door in.
We are already seeing the effects of post 10k growth. One Bitcoin hiccup = $100+

I'm still not buying bitcoins with fiat, continuing to work for them. I just feel so Ragnar Danneskjöld about the whole thing. But it is to note that my damn work keeps getting me less and less bitcoin (although these days I quote in litecoin due to the lower fees)
Had to sell a few litecoins a few days ago at 70 or so to pay off some test mining gear. Not a biggie, need the stuff to be able to continue to fix things....
I'd also rather be a miner but don't have the infrastructure to that. Go big or go home. Buying Bitcoins is the second best thing I can think of. Of course the increased difficulty and lower rewards will give you less and less Bitcoins but the price keeps increasing so that makes up for it. But there is a centralization effect happening with Bitcoin in the sense that big miners are forcing their smaller competitors out of the marketplace by constantly reinvesting in better infrastructure (mining gear) - which the average Joe can't keep up with and therefore his mining power keeps decreasing. So in the end there will be a few top dogs and a few "hobby miners" I guess.

Recent article may help
https://99bitcoins.com/bitcoin-mining-profitable-beginners-explanation/I gather it's only about $300 profit per S9 per month and that is probably the best case scenario (heard these machines are not exactly reliable), and it will only drop. So even at 10 S9s you're only looking at $3000 per month. One BTC is growing by more than that at the moment and you don't have to do anything except keep your keys safe.
Personally I wouldn't do it.
Ugh, that‘s really nasty. S9‘s are cheaper now though, 1.4k but it doesn‘t leave much room for error. If the price of BTC drops bagholding isn‘t much fun and having headaches with those miners neither. I guess I‘ll pass

I try to keep things in check..and have done worse things with BTC this year..but the one that stands out as an OUCH!
Is the 1.01 BTC I paid when BTC was worth about $1,150 bucks...thus I paid at $18,920.73 btc now $19,109.94 to pour cement in an old
cistern in my basement to level the floor up....for a workshop there....again OUCH!
I did worse, last year...but reminded every time I sweep the workshop floor. Ack!
I paid 19 btc if I remember correctly in 2013 (currently over $350k) for a brick from Butterfly Labs.

Ouch, that's gotta hurt.
It's kinda interesting looking through posts from the past few years and seeing the same type of comments.
I think in the next 4-5 years, comments are going to be even more amusing to read. Instead of people talking about how they regret spending their btc, we'll look back 5 years from now and see comments like: "In 2017 I divested some portion of my bitcoin into multiple altcoins.... now I look back and did the math, and had I just left everything in bitcoin I would have had [2X/ 3X /4X /insert some multiple here] more wealth than I do now."
I could tell that story right now.

If I had left everything in Bitcoin THIS YEAR I would have made more money than any of my other Altcoin "investments" + trading (where I lost even more money because of high risk). Lesson learned: Never take advice from boneheads. Especially not in the crypto world.
But I think it's really unhealthy to think that way because the moment you make a decision that information is not available to you so beating yourself up for it later is really just as stupid. Just learn from mistakes and move on.

I still don't get how pulling 1.3 billion out of crypto gives a massive drop of a total $100 billion+ within such a short space of time.
It's probably not the reason. And as someone pointed out 1 contract is 100$, not 1BTC so it's not $1.3B. But I think if it was $1.3B it could have a similar effect when there is low volume imho.
I remember last year around the same time the same thing happened and BTC crashed quite hard and took until February to recover. Now looking back at the chart it was just a speedbump.

So much hope still on the forum - does this mean we go down much more, till there is despair?

What gives me hope is the huge influx of newbs coming to the exchanges in the last 2 months (some exchanges are still closed because being overwhelmed by signups?)
I think this will not prevent any fall, but makes for a good rebound after good news + price starting to rise again happens (Question if in days / weeks or months)
It's not hope. It's knowing that circumstances don't matter, only state of being matters. This attitude is unconquerable.

Man no one makes money on those things.

Yep. Bitconnect is dead I guess. Everyone who saw videos on Youtube of their conference knew it was a scam. This guy has become a meme now.
The early people certainly made a lot of money there and the general populace got burned. That's why we should sometimes listen to our fellow crypto lovers when they have our best interest at heart.
Bitcoin is the one and only original. If its price goes somewhere sub 3k it's probably game over. But it won't happen until all the knockoffs die first.

$18k -> $3k (6x) wouldn't be unprecedented. In 2011, we fell from $30 -> $2 (15x), in early 2013 from $250 -> $50 (5x), and in late 2013 from $1200 -> $200 (6x).
If we get away with a low of $9k (2x) I'd hardly even call that a crash!
Here are projected lows compared to historical crashes:
2x: $9,000
3x: $6,000
4x: $4,500
5x (early 2013): $3,600
6x (late 2013): $3,000
10x: $1,800
15x (2011): $1,200
I'm not even saying Bitcoin didn't have worse days because it has certainly been going through a lot and came out on top. This past year has been a gold rush for Bitcoin and if it did crash back down to really low prices I think it would destroy a lot of confidence in the market. People might discard it again.
And I agree on another post that Bitcoin should be USED. It's the closest thing to digital cash I have ever owned. But the transaction fees have been way too high lately. That's why I like Litecoin.

This afternoon I scraped together all remaining money I have and did another SEPA transfer, this time making it a high priority payment, costing € 5,-. It was there within 30 minutes. Apparently three confirmations is enough.
Might be your lucky day. Bitcoin getting cheaper and cheaper.

Woah, look at all that green! Went to sleep for a couple of hours and BTC is back in the saddle and all but 2 coins in the top 100 are in the green.
Congrats to everyone that bought the dip and shame on every weak hand that thought the sky was falling. If you sold at the bottom you will likely do it again.

hey...I resemble that remark! (panic sold like wimp....it was LTC to pay the tax man etc...but still ..wimp)
Then again I retired on Monday ..when things went to hell...so it is my fault for the crypto crash...so sold at the low (LTC) to restore proper Karma
you are welcome!
No insult intended. Sometimes you gotta pay the bills when timing couldn't be worse - at the low. Knowing full well you just paid twice as much as was needed.
Thank you for your offering to the crypto gods. (Is there a name for it? Maybe honeybadger?). It has been received.

fuck...missed it
Pretty much anytime is the bottom right now :/
I mean we've reached the 20k... We're at 11k...
So you can buy anytime and hold tight.
If you try to fish the bottom there is statistically a rather low chance that you hit the right point. YOu'll probably miss the bottom and sooner than you think it'll be over 20k again ^^
yeah, I'm kinda famous (in my house) for picking up pennies in front of the steamroller
I am refining it to a fine art
I can always say: "
I thought about buying/selling at that price" because often it did cross my mind to buy the bottom or sell the peak but then I never execute. And as valta pointed out, you can buy anywhere right now and will be in the green once Bitcoin starts testing the old ATH.

Come on whales, time to wake up, time to buy those cheap coins.
Let's see if 5k holds.

On a positive note, 1 Bitcoin is still more than 4 times more valuable than 1 ounce of gold.

Racist is a meaningless buzzword, stating facts is now racist, yes jews control the media, and the banks, that's a fact, get over it.
yes blacks on average score much lower on IQ tests and commit a disproportionately high amount violent crimes? is that ''racist''? don't know, don't care, but it happens to be true.
OMG People of color score lower on Ethnocentric tests. I'm not even going to dignify the rest of your crap.
Get a grip, you're a racist.
P.S. This thread is about
BTC.
*sigh* no. IQ tests are simply pattern recognition. There is nothing cultural about it. That tired old excuse is... tiresome.
And they do commit more crime. About four or five times as much per capita. Again, easy enough to look up for anyone who actually cares.
Socio-economic status is a far more reliable predictor of IQ test performance. Low SES children consistently underperform
interesting read.
https://pumpkinperson.com/2016/02/11/the-incredible-correlation-between-iq-income/That article is massively out of whack. Bill Gates appears twice, the sample is way too small and the hypothesis seems forced.
The average income has much more to do with who you surround yourself with than with your IQ.
And I doubt that most homeless people have such low IQs. But if that actually were the case (globally) then we'd have a strong indicator how to prevent homelessness (education).
Oh yea, and blacks are also racist. How you deal with that?

Any paper I can read about that? (the red part).
Education doesn't up your IQ more than very marginally. We need genetic engineering for that.
The Chinese are working on that right now.
...how I hated quoting that entire thing. Would also rather remain on-topic.
No paper to support my brain fart. But let's just say that rich people would agree. "You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with." - Jim Rohn.
I do believe education can improve your IQ. It's an arbitrary scale anyway and if extended exposure to complex subjects forces you to concentrate more you will also score higher on IQ tests. You can definitely train for that shit.
And the assumption that homeless people are less endowed mentally is about as shallow as judging someone by the color of their skin. And I refuse to believe Logan Paul has above average IQ.

Man, now the stars are finally aligning for me again as I have cash on the side and price is dropping. Will step in sub 8k. Maybe it'll crash even harder. The bears are good for something once.
