This thread is mk2 of the original Wall Observer thread that started in June 2012 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=85687.0) and reached 1191 pages. We thought that thread was long!  It even got it's own meta thread here https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=155012.0. Hilarious to see the price at that time  Grin

I love how there are actually charts in the Meta thread that shows the average posts per day on this thread, that is quite impressive

That and if I add the 2012 thread guess its almost at 10K haha Smiley

Anyways the price is always an amusing thing no wonder its so popular haha

Yah I was wondering why blockchain.info was down when checking my address
Not really a price dropper but it may keep the market a bit quiet for an hour or two

Yes, AM entering the mining sphere again will be interesting.
We know that most AM mining revenue will be paid to shareholders as dividends in BTC, which probably decreases the actual amount of available fresh daily mined BTC in the market.

Guess I will put it here as well lol meant to put it in the AM thread but it doesn't hurt to multiplace it

There is one phone  missing in that photo. I purchased a "mobile" phone in 1991 or so and it was roughly 8x10x3 and had a handset that looked like a traditional phone with a 8in antennae, i believe that was the first mobile phone built as I was totally into cell phones when they first were introduced in the late 80s and paying 1-3 dollars per minute. Ill have to find a picture of that phone.. too bad I didn't keep it, im sure it would be worth something today..

Wow, that's a lot of BTC people put in. Never understood why I should buy Ether, myself. Any thoughts on whether this 25k+ BTC might have a negative impact on BTC/USD?

I think only negative impact on ETH stockholders.

But in the blog, they're talking about literally dumping some of the BTC on the market for expenses payable in fiat currency. How much is not clear. I suppose those with debt payable in BTC were likely to have held in the first place, though.

25 K bitcoin for the Ether Project will put some selling pressure on the price
That said I doubt they would dump it all at once also have a minor called Storj.io raising right now

25k BTC = $15M

So investors think that their stock will outperform Bitcoin and that stock also has similar crash possibility. Acctually this investment is at least 5 - 10 times more risky than Bitcoin with same rewards.

Actually just read a statement on the etherum page about how the Bitcoins will be distributed
https://blog.ethereum.org/2014/08/08/announcement-on-planned-exodus-withdrawal/

So expect some movement in the next 48 hours I guess

The intent is to withdraw 4150 BTC from our exodus address within the next 48 hours.

We reserve the right to withdraw up to 850 BTC more if needed before the end of the 42 day duration of the sale, but at this point it is likely that the remainder of the BTC in the address will remain unused until the sale ends.

Of this amount, 2650 BTC will be distributed to pay for loans for prior expenses. Individuals who have contributed loans to the project will receive repayment in BTC directly; “we” will not be selling any portion of this 2650 BTC on exchanges ourselves, although individuals may choose to independently convert the BTC that they receive into fiat after the fact.

sentiment of bitcoiners seems quite negative against ethereum.

people fear what they don't understand, I guess. Or maybe it's envy these guys are being swamped with coins.

btw: not saying ETH is a good investment, I have strong doubts. Ethereum being successful does not necessaril imply ETH will be valuable.

also: I'm not endorsing ethereum, I just think it's highly interesting, mainly from a technical perspective and for the implications it might have (which I can't yet fully imagine). Unsure who's really behind it, either, and what the larger plan is there...

One thing I can say for sure, though: comparing ethereum to any old altcoin pump & dump is just fucking lame. If you do that you're either too lazy to take a look at what it is and therefore ignorant, or you are hostile against it for some reason and spreading fud.

It is interesting yea as a concept (and they still didn't deliever) and like I said this is project for VC and not Bitcoiners who mostly want to increase their BTC count - so most of investors will be dissapointed probably.

Yes, very likely they will. I invested donated some and consider that "funding development".

If people expect to "make more coins" with that, they will likely be disappointed... at least for a long time.

Oh I expect to make a turnover on it but when the system is fully launched and working
During the period where the price drops when it enters into an exchange ^_^.

I kid it might break 525 again since it did take a dip already before another drop or stabilization in a new sideways range.

I just sold a coin to a friend who was interested in Bitcoin at this price
Then later will buy that same coin with a 2 day wait at whatever the market is so it depends what you think will happen.
Those Bitcoin exchanges are slow ^^.

That said it's volatile today so depending on when you sell it should be able to get it into the green without to much issue.

Interestingly when I tried to enter a purchase order at SecondMarket today I received this email:

Unfortunately it is unlikely that we will be able to sell you... BTC today… we have a fairly large Bitcoin Investment Trust order that we have to fill ahead of selling BTC to other counterparties.

Bullish?

bullish.

It is still pretty fucked that they do NOT have enough coins... maybe they should have been accumulating so they could fill all new orders.. dumb asses.

there accumulating now....

they can't instantly buy 3K bitcoins to satisfy orders that would move price up, and they want cheap coins, like everyone else...

Well my 420 Cough yes saying the same thing because I was waiting for it to occur is finally starting to happen

Now I have a real question in your opinion should I calculate lower or keep the same price target

My logic:

With over $250 million vc investment poring in from this year alone, over 8 $1+ billion dollar companies entered the space, over 6 new bitcoin ETF's launching by end of year, with an expected 100k merchants by end of year.

The price is going to drop significantly due to conversions as most BTC are being used for currency purposes now which is great but means a structural downtrend in the short run, the stronger the adoption the larger the price drop in the short term.

The value is not derived from the price, it is derived from the technology and the technology so far has proved to be resilient, global, and amazing. Bitcoin is moving at break neck speeds with adoption rates faster than facebook/twitter and the internet itself.

So value wise it will rise at breakneck speeds later but in this run the price will keep falling, my question is what the bottom for now will be.

its up to you
you have all the info, you make up your own mind.
I think it should go up, but i know that just because something should be doesn't mean it will be.
good luck.

Fair enough thanks Adam and it is an annoying puzzle.

I know that the price is dropping but don't know how strong the damn price elasticity is and whether structural pressures are greater right now than demand lot of sellers because of all the VC's saturating the demand for Bitcoins for now.

From a perspective that people are always converting that part is a no brainer, but how long will it take till Bitcoin demand itself increases.
(In other words in my head the fall from 600 to 300 will rebound in turn and with gains later)
Time duration for me is 1-3 months in a normal asset in Bitcoin its accelerated so it stands to reason it could be 3 to 8 weeks lol. (Then again humans tend to be slow in aggregate so maybe it would follow a normal usage and adoption curve)

Some of the great unknown factors for me are the impact Apple Pay will have in the market and how much demand may move sideways into bitcoin or move away from it until more established players are in the game, sure theres Braintree but it does make me curious how that will impact market dynamics didn't get the Alibaba info yet or read much into it but will need to look at this later.

True, but I don't think there is enough capital sitting on virtex to buy through that wall...

I blew through all my dry powder already

It just makes very little sense to me to try to defend that number considering the CAD is only worth like 80 cents USD right now

*edit* bah, I'm getting as excited over a ten dollar rise as the bears get over a ten dollar dip... time for bed methinks. The next 8 hours are not that critical

I thought wait a minute if I do this then I will be in a real long return period, and looking back on it was a wise move to not take that risk even at 10:1.
I haven't been keeping up with gox so not sure if they ever converted the retrieved coins to fiat
If it was in BTC lol. If it was in Fiat still bad but at those hedge ratios still not worth it ^^.

any OTC market in coins held on BitSwamp yet?

50 cents on the dollar? what's the discount for swamp coins I wonder?

I think MtGox was still up when they were doing that, you just couldn't get your coins or cash out. They were using MtGox points/rewards/whichever to transfer the funds.

Yah it was during the withdrawal period where coins were not allowed out because of (Malleability) issues but the sites tradebooks were up and running with the price going into that crazy insanity then crash and burn wipeout good times

(Lol sort of back at that rally price now)

Not yet. They said they will in the future.

Hmm, good to hear, I guess, but I'll believe it when I sees it.

Any pressure on virtex to lower their fees would be welcome.

True enough they did halve their fees a while back but it's still a lot higher than the average

cornering the market is a real danger for something so small as Bitcoin is right now, these 'dumps' are just theatre to shake coins into fewer and fewer hands ... because generally people are basically stupid and influenced emotionally by price expectations (FUD).

That's why the 'satoshi' stash is needed to thwart any future market cornering attempts, before the next wave gets too big and potentially destructive.

Well it's going to move a few people who got bear trapped in the most recent price climb
Earlier holders from the 180 to 200 range will just take profits for now and see what happens or maybe if they cashed out get back in again and hold longer still a fairly decent entry at 230 even with a down shift or upshift of +50 in the next week or so.

Why exactly is Bitcoin rallying? Nothing has changed.

Exactly. Nothing *has* changed. In my opinion, all Bitcoin has to do to succeed is not fail.

By what metric? And what do you mean when you say Bitcoin, the Software, the Community or the use as a Payment Infrastructure?
Because I think it ultimately failed on the latter two accounts with The Goxxing. (or if you believe GOX the former one....)

It is still here, still being traded at a decent price and still has growing infrastructure and investment. Gox was an incident but was far from Bitcoin failing.
Indeed the recent news about additional venture capital around 120 million from 21jobs shows that the system is still growing strong
Gox did hurt but it definitely did not kill bitcoin
We have a long way to go yet and it's constantly moving.

It all seems so disingenuous when you only tell us of these "predictable" outcomes after they happen...

Ethereum in the future once they start coin generation and perhaps Maidsafe once they get their product release but the divine oracle of Mervyn would be helpful for the now Smiley.

That actually makes a lot of sense given that it was recent news
Nice find didn't even know that occurred but it looks like the markets reacted instantly to it.

French President Francois Hollande has said "Europe has won" as a debt deal was struck with Greece.

He said that to have lost Greece as a member would have been to lose "the heart of our civilisation" and called on the Greek parliament to convene within hours to adopt the new package of austerity measures.

Greek banks are expected to remain closed for a few more days while details of the package are finalised.

After 7 years Bitcoin is still unwelcome as a currency and a poor store of value. Until something wonderful happens, the bears will keep winning until first mover advantage is insignificant and irrelevant.

We always need to keep hope alive, at the least we can take solace in that for better or worse the Bears will always be around as long as Bitcoin is still worth talking about.
