It's not about being "wealthier", it's about not being irrational: if the price is extremely volatile, we already reached the peak, and there is a down trend, why would you risk the chance to sell everything now and buy again on the bottom?
I'm expecting more >2000btc drops, are you not?
I bet more money is lost by people selling on a top and waiting for a dip, than buying on a top just before a crash.

To go after someone on a Japanese court, is less of a formidable task than doing the same thing on a Slovenian court.
Depends where you live. EU residents would rather go to Slovenian courts.

It worries me the talk of an impending crash is waning.
Don't worry - the higher it goes the faster and harder it will fall.
I don't care what the uber bulls think - this happened before and it will happen again, it's only a matter of when.
When? It will crash from $100k to more reasonable $40k. Happy waiting.

Aha - more crazy talk. This is more like it.
When people start talking about completely unrealistic expectations we know it's coming soon.
We all have different trading strategies. My definition of crazy is hoping for something that may never happen. Someone is probably still waiting for a dip below $20. Same as waiting for a crash below $200 or waiting for a price over $100k. Both are unrealistic crazy talk.

Post 3575236 (copy this link) (by bizz) (scraped on 2020-04-04_Sat_11.23h):
Under $200 is not in any way unrealistic. Don't underestimate the power of greed.
The people making it crash will be selling tens of thousands of Bitcoin and they will buy it all back (and a lot more) at much lower prices over an extended period of time.
OK you got me. What I meant: waiting for a $200, $300, $400 (or 20%,30%,50%) dip is unrealistic crazy talk if it never happens. And you don't know if it will ever happen. So therefore it's crazy. Trading is fun isn't it?

The price was below $200, what, 3 weeks ago? You compare the likelihood of that to the likelihood of $20?

No.

You mean the bubble the government is working really hard to keep from deflating even more?
I wouldn't be worried about them deflating. Everything will inflate anyway due to printing. I'd be worried about Cyprus style taxes coming everywhere.

So.... while we are burning are heads trying to pick a bottom Chinese exchanges are adding services:
https://796.com/news/detail/92.htmlUsers will be able to buy and sell Bitcoin at 796 Exchange from 14:00, December, 17th, 2013 (GMT +8) using US dollars. We would like to encourage as much participation in the new LTC/USD market as possible, so we will initially launch with zero trading fees. Users can deposit/withdraw through International Wire Transfer and OKPay. More deposit methods will be added soon. We’ve also added an internal transfer feature to better serve our users, especially those who have difficulty depositing USD. We’re working hard to provide Litecoiners all around the world with a stable, reliable and comfortable trading experience, as well as quick response customer service.
WTF?

Glad to hear. I always wondered is HK in the same boat as rest of China.
Am I the only one thinking this China news is actually no news at all. Regulators already said a week ago no to bitcoin acceptance in stores & will regulate exchanges. Carefully crafted FUD titles making people believe this is a complete ban while actually it's nothing more than what was said last week.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=374214.0chinese state TV (CCTV) just talked about bitcoin & chinese central bank
roughly translated:
* Bitcoin is virtual currency and legality has been classified
* Reports say Bank of China directed payment processors to stop doing business with Bitcoin businesses
* Personal holding and transfers still allowed
* People speculate this may be the end of rise of bitcoin
This was just on CCTV
Nothing more than what was said last week.

Well, naturally no? They are in Hong Kong, so they should have access to USD, makes sense if you ask me. I wouldn't be surprised if the other Chinese Exchanges move as well.

Yes but its not planned for implementation until 2016. That figure doesn't mean a whole lot, if it passes there's little to stop it being brought forward, but its a nice comfortable looking 'long way away' figure for the media.
Now that you mention it, in 2016 we will have bitcoin reward halving! Imagine what a bull bitcoin will be!
ALL ABOARD!!!! CHOOOO CHOOOO!!!Lol, yes, Cyprus 2 on a continental scale

I've been saying that to folks ever since that IMF paper came out. It's all small talk now. But once they decide to do it it will be BOOM flat tax - shaving 100k+ accounts over night. They will do it fast and quick (almost without warning - yet warnings are here today) so people wont be able to run.

What I'd like to know is the influence of new people learning about bitcoin every day and buying in, as a factor with how many new bitcoins are mined every day, and how those affect the price's likelihood of climbing up overall. For example, is there a viral factor to this, which is impacted by good/bad press, and by how much?
Sometimes I use "bitcoin" as a key word in a Twitter search and it seems the number of tweets per 10 seconds is going up, with more progressive questioning overtaking Business Insider-type bashing. How much influence does that have on whether the price will indeed go up over time, and by how much?

Anyone that's been around bitcoin for a while has seen this before, investors are patiently sitting on the sidelines waiting for the bears to run out. Anything other than that would be a poor strategy as bitcoin has a good history of repeating patterns, check the end of the fall from the rise in April

EDIT: August 2012 is probably a little closer to the current situation, not much in the difference though.
When are these investors going to buy exactly? Maybe you noticed we have been going down for months.
And what sane person would buy big amounts of coins right now knowing that one fake tweet or rumous is enough for the sheep to panic sell everything they got and make Bitcoin drop 50 dollars in a few minutes. And since this is actually happening about once a week i really doubt any serious person would buy right.
They know that no amount of good news will make the price go up anymore. People will keep selling till it has become worthless if this stupidity continues.
An amazing idea ruined by traders and idiots.
Patiently sitting on the sidelines doesn't mean jumping into every dip & falling knife. It means months of waiting for an entry.

I think we are at a point where it's safe to say Bitcoin failed.

If you take a good look back when was the real first interest in Bitcoin it was on Cyprus banking crisis. Everything after that was speculative frenzy. Everything before that were geeks & silkroad.
I don't see Cyprus like crisis anytime soon (next 12 months). US will hold on printing while EU is just starting the print machine. Maybe if Putin goes nuts it can all change in one day.

Coming from Russia I won't believe it until they have some real laws about that, not just words.
Personally I don't buy it, but here you have the news.
"Yes to bitcoin! Russian ministry says quasi-money ban may endanger banks, retailers"
http://rt.com/news/218019-bill-ban-bitcoin-russia/I did not see any "Yes to bitcoin" in the Minister's objections. He complains that "the proposed definition lacks precision", namely it would apply also to merchant points and the like, besides its intended targets. He did not call for the bill to be rejected, but wants the ban to be limited to other things. Guess whether bitcoin would be one of those other things.
Besides, the bill was requested by Putin Almighty, so it probably was motivated by security issues, not economic ones. In that case, bitcoin would surely be a target.
It seems hard to me to ignore that the Russian Bitcoin ban coincides with Russia's Ukraine intervention. Seeing as they were apparently analyzing the economic ramifications of military intervention, closing off venues for cashflow out of the country seems logical. Russia hasn't put capital controls in place yet, but I'd be surprised if they didn't have plans for such, if things deteriorate beyond their ability to reasonably prop the rouble up.
While keeping my tinfoil hat on, I'd say the next rally will be triggered by some big (bigger than Cyprus) country in desperation. Maybe it's close, maybe it's far far away; but believe me the next bank run won't be easy to handle.
/tinfoil hat off.
Sure. But we are years from that. Look at Russia few days ago. No one will run to banks or bitcoin or even gold. They will run to stores for iPhones & TVs...

Would each confirmation take hours?
Only until the next difficulty adjustment.
In 2011, Namecoin was driven up by high hashrate and pretty much abandoned. This caused blocks to take hours and retargets to take months. This is what sparked merged mining because if it wasn't for that, Namecoin would have been a complete failure. There is nothing higher hashrate to merge Bitcoin with. If an ASIC exodus were to happen, it may ruin Bitcoin.
This is what worries me the most about Bitcoin. This scenario is getting closer every day.

Somehow I don't think hackers responsible for a hack on large bitcoin service care so much about bitcoin that they would not dump on first opportunity regardless of price. Or they may sell it at big discount and then the buyer would dump.
But what hurts the most is image of Bitcoin to outsiders. You have to be really crazy and suicidal guy on wallstreet to put any serious money into something that's being robbed to oblivion on a yearly basis.

Sometime countries ban short selling in downtrends. Funny things happen then. Index goes up for a short time only to crash even more later because no one is there to buy(cover) anymore.

That sounds kind of pro-short selling. If I get your point
It is. For various reasons. Liquidity being the most important.

Unless you're talking about
naked short selling (which can only be done to the extent that people leave their coins on the exchanges) I'm not with you:
a bottom will be found somewhere.
Reasoning: at 0.001 USD/BTC I will buy all offered coins and transfer them to my cold storage. Probably before that price is reached others will act similarly. No BTC swaps can be legitimately offered then and hence no short-selling can occur.
Also: If there was no short selling some miners would not be in business at all as they could not hedge. Some traders would not trade at all for last 12 months, meaning less liquidity meaning no big player would ever even look at Bitcoin. Some exchanges would already be broke, this forum would have no trolls ... who wants that kind of life?

Just like with $300, for lots of people sub $200 is their uncle point and will prepare to sell. What we've seen today so far are stops being triggered and maybe margin call stop outs. I don't think big % of cold storage coins even moved yet. Dunno. Will see. Just talking my book here...

I'm 100% sure now world is entering deflation. If central bankers decide to fight it with printing for inflation it will probably cause worldwide hyperinflation. Anyway BTC is going down before going up. There's no place to hide right now. Fun times ahead.
Oil, EURO, CHF ... big moves. It's like a domino.

Because if we go down first we will magically go up after.
1 of the many Bitcoin myths.
Like I said there's no place to hide. If BTC continues down it is always possible it will never recover or something will replace it.

The question is whether BTC will suffer from the deflation tendencies in the markets (on top of the current bear market that needs more time to resolve). I think the effect is limited, primarily because BTC is not an investment class (yet) but a gimmick for enthusiasts and speculators.
Well BTC is inflationary (10% I think?) in a deflationary environment. It has no chance right now.

ARE YOU HAPPY?
You made somebody lose 5770 BTC in a margin call because he went long when you screamed "last chance to buy!"!!!
In liquidations at OKcoin:
OKCoin Margin Call
2015-01-26 23:39:23 Close Long $270.50 15608Cont≈฿5770.0555
Where did you get that okcoin info?
You need to have an account.
You go to the "Trade" page, you go to "Liquidation", you click "Last 7 Days: Filled" and you have all the margin calls of all users.
If I read that correctly that's just a number of coins sold. Not actual loss.

how can greeks buy bitcoin if there banking services are halted?
Yup. Too late for Greeks. But others see this & they will think why not buy a few. Just in case.
