I'm loving all this selling going on at $90+. People are selling thousands of coins, expecting to buy in cheaper over the weekend, and the price hasn't moved at all.

There's still a million dollar wall at $70. What are the chances that someone will get us past that?
I'd say 100% when it's pulled.
This. The big walls are time and time again just illusions. We approach them and they disappear. How often do they actually get eaten through? I don't have faith right now that the support moving up is
real support. Price crashes 81% in less than a week and we are stabilized / on an uptrend like a day later?

Sure, big walls can be pulled, but how much does it matter? The $1M wall at $70 now has $4.5M (and rising) of support in front of it. It's not like the current price is being held up by one person.

doesn't anyone else see the similarities?
The important part is post-bubble. There's no reason to think that it will behave the same as in 2011.
There is no bad news this time to crush confidence. Actually, good news is still coming in just as it did on the way up. New merchants accepting every day. New exchanges and projects being worked on. Plenty of media coverage and people coming in.

no bad news?
what are you talking about?
btc24 is history along with +5M $
bitfloor stoped trading (AML reasons probably too)
it just hasn't made it to the news yet
Well, news of that scale was happening on the way up too. The chain fork, instawallet and bitcoin-central, bitinstant, etc..
None of it really compares to MtGox getting hacked in 2011.
I think the good news has by far outweighed the bad. But that's just my opinion.

Someone sold thousands of coins and then threw up a 4k ask wall at 88, and the bids would not budge. They started buying into the wall and then it was pulled. Bullish sign.
Yeah why slam into the wall, push it back, then put up a wall to keep it down? Clearly trying to drive the price down, I don't see why else you'd do that. It's not making you more money.
It's amazing to watch. Before it would have created panic and lag. MtGox is handling things much better, and those left with coins seem to be much more content to hold them.

But combined with the bid sum being back on track I think those are strong indicators for buying pressure.

(Although we have a healthier ask sum this time so hopefully the rise will be more gradual)
Please have a look at where the bid sum actually resides. Half of it is below $60/Ƀ, $2M are even below $25/Ƀ. I call manipulators all those that move millions but park them at market – 50%.
I would love to see in addition to the above chart a chart with the weighted average bid and the weighted average ask and a chart of that spread which I would call manipulators activity chart.
Some is from manipulators. But don't you think much of it could be from people convinced the price is going to come back down to $50 or lower? A lot of people have fiat waiting for their lower prices.
$21M is still a crazy bid sum compared to the brief peak at $16M before the crash. I'm very surprised it's still rising.

Maybe a few of those 60,000 new Gox customers that signed up in early April still want coins? Nah... that couldn't happen!
5,000 verified today apparently

Not sure why people thought they would be scared off by $90 bitcoins when they were happy buying at $200+

He's asking if the Bid sum is the either:
The product of the number of BTC bids * current market price
OR
The sum of each BTC * the price of that bid.
It's the latter.
That was exactly what I was asking ... thankyou

Agreed, BitPirate, would not make much sense otherwise - that's why I wanted to check

No disrespect to either of you, but there is a 'junior member' saying it is so (and a junior member asking

) and you, a 'senior member' saying you believe it is so ... can anyone else say definitively that it is so ?
Yes, it's definitely the sum of each bid at the respective price they were placed at.
If it was the total volume * market price it would change rapidly during price swings, which isn't what happened during the rally yesterday. Also, it wouldn't be very useful at all.

That 21M

Well there's more than that. 21m is the total bid sum on the order books. Which you can view on

What is this sell off you speak of? There is huge sells and no price change. More like, playing-chicken-with-wall time.
Lol, I think we need to all remind ourselves that this is the weekend still. The fact that the price rose at all is impressive, it doesn't need to go to $130+

Never a dull day at MtGox HQ. The DDoSers must be milking every last chance before the big exchanges at CoinLab anf CoinSetter arrive. Once there is more than one big exchange, DDoS of any one will have much less effect.
Can't mention the DDOS scapegoat enough?
They simply pull the plug if a selloff is on the horizon.
Nobody except the suckers who can't get out believes it any more.
I can't agree that a sell off was on the horizon. There was certainly a downtrend for the last 20 or so hours though, but it was gradual enough.
They might have better tools of predicting that though.
A watchlist for the largest BTC holdings and when they log in?
I don't really like coming up with stuff they can potentially do, but just taking their word for granted isn't either for me.
What kind of sell off do you think they are trying to prevent though? There have been quite a few ~
BTC5k sell offs in the past few days that recovered fine

Well according to this the ones significantly above 5k. I don't know any exact figures but if you look at the volume of the flash crash from the top there must have been some serious coin involved.
I guess anything's possible. But considering all the problems in their trading platform, I tend to doubt they have the capability to predict crashes.

Not sure of the accuracy, but an anaylsis of a previous DDOS was done here:

It's completely fake, but some will still sell off ahead of time just incase. That's probably the goal of whoever wrote it in the first place.

1. Everything fundamental is growing stronger each day.
What exactly has happened to make the fundamentals stronger? People don't care about DDos as much as they used to anymore, but even then the last time Mt got Ddos'ed for more than an hour the price shot down - and then quickly up.
Exchanges are really weak at this point. 4 of them have been shut in one week because banks closed their accounts. What happens if mt's account is closed? We go from 137 to 5.
Until we get a robust exchange which is likely within a few months, I think the price is hugely overvalued. It might in the very short term go up to 160 again, but the trendline is down for a bit because it is just too risky to invest at 140 and those that might buy would be very jumpy.
Moreover, the press attention reaches a saturation point. Most people have herd about bitcoins now. Most certainly everyone that works in finance has herd about them but even your mom and dad has herd about them with bitcoins having been mentioned in the news all over. Whoever has wanted to buy has done so or will finish doing so this month or next.
Institutional investors might think of getting on board, but stocks give good returns, are certain to be worth at least half their price and are safe for the investment manager to invest in. On the other hand, bitcoins is of the highest risk, the price has no stability so the investment would need to be actively managed which is quite expensive and the market is quite small for big money so it is even more difficult to buy the thing which is quite a big consideration considering how difficult it is to buy even for the avarage joe.
For these reasons, unless we get some big good news, the bear has killed the cat.
What about all the merchants; isn't that one of the main goals for bitcoin? I've seen more new merchants accepting in the past week than ever.

So, what are the expectations for the weekend guys? Based on past weekends I'd say that it will stay around $130-$140 without much happening at all. Weekends are kinda boring actually.
That's pretty much my guess. Most of the action will be in how the bids and asks fill in. Support at $120 is getting stronger each time I look

Most people who were looking to buy over the weekend have probably done so already. The rest are waiting it out to hope for lower prices.
$125 wouldn't surprise me at all, but the asks are very thin to keep the price in the $120s for long.

Anyone else unable to login to mtgox? For the past 20 minutes have been trying, and login button on home page does nothing. Click. Click. Reclick. Nothing.
Many are confirming this, including myself.
Is there anyone in US/Canada that can login on gox right now?
People in the UK seem to be able to.

I'm not taking a side on this, but if you hate the guy so much then just use the ignore button.
Or at least take it to another thread.. this thread is a lot less fun since all that started.

It definitely should slow down.. the asks are very thinned out and haven't filled in up to $120. It seems like most of the people buying on the dips end up selling off after the price goes up $10 though, and with all the uncertainty lately I'm not sure there can be a sustained rally yet.

Each rally over the past 3 days has ended with a dump to even lower prices. I think this will deter people from continuing to buy into them.
We could see over $100 today, but I don't think it will last long.. most of the bid depth is big walls at $90 and $80 that may not be real.

Fuck that. 9,000 on 90 now.
I say we are going to the mooon guys.
Wash, rinse, repeat.
I don't know. I don't know why, I just think 79 was the bottom for this round. the move from 80 to 97 was similar to the move from 50 to 70. i.e huge buys followed by huge walls.
I am thinking either these bid wallers know something we do not, or, we are being fooled.
I'm voted for fooled for right now.. there's no bid depth other than that wall. Doesn't seem like that many people are ready to buy yet

We will reach $125 before the dump? Speculate
I personally doubt it. Most of the people buying now are the same who dumped on the way down to $80, which is why they have fiat on the exchange to buy.
If this rally is because of the China news I don't see it lasting long, because there won't be new buyers right away. I think the price will stay around $100 for now.

Stability

First DDOS to fail to drop the price.
Also the first one to bring up the price

Not quite, for the last 3 days they have been using gox lag to drive up the price. We are officially over sold and people are scared to NOT have coins.
The price shot up after MtGox going down weeks ago; this is far from the first time. It only has an effect if enough people panic sell, and most are used to it by now.

It's interesting that news isn't affecting the price much anymore. I mean just today,
http://www.gyft.com is pretty huge news. I can go to almost every retail store I normally shop at in the U.S, and pay with bitcoins through them.
Fundamentals are improving as fast as ever, regardless of what the price is doing. Now we just need some of these new exchanges to be successful.

Not affecting it immediately and clearly perhaps but you can be sure it does affect it.
As dull as it is, we need a period of nothing, calm, stability, no panics.
If we manage that for a week or so we can skip the whole slow demise we saw in 2011.
Price hovered around $14 for a month in July 2011. It didn't help.
How many new merchants and exchanges were there in July 2011 compared to now? That's the biggest factor in if it will play out similarly in my opinion.
