Price seems to have lost a lot of steam. Sideways for months again maybe? Which wouldn't be bad thought if we can keep these levels without major dumping action.
At least from an investor point of view.
As a active trader this is horrible.
Agreed, boring sideways action since the halving. A lot of people felt the halving was a big let down albeit the huge gains from the start of 2016. Kinda shows how people anticipate movement in bitcoin ya know?
"well geez it's bitcoin its gotta go up 10x!"
Having said that I will admit I am a hypocrite and I expect price to go up substantially in the coming months. Wasn't that the way the last halving went? Small gains around the actual halving followed by huge spikes later on?

When will the fees go down?
Will they ever? I don't see much purpose in holding fiat anymore so I want to be able to spend my crypto...
Someone enlighten me on the process of LN and when we could actually expect bitcoin fees and backlog to be lowered.
Friends dont even want to move their bitcoin off of coinbase because its too expensive, if bitcoin is purely going to be a store of value "digital gold" then won't an altcoin eventually take highest market cap?

What kind of goals are you looking to achieve that require a sudden >$500k <$1000k, if I may ask.
Looking to cash out $3M USD worth of Bitcorn before March 1 to have it working for me in a retirement portfolio by end of Q1.
Ideally, I'd like to sell higher than lower, but recognize this is a rough season.
$3Mil USD into a retirement portfolio by end of Q1 huh? thats an impressive goal...
may i ask how you intend to get into a retirement portfolio? or how you intend to deal with tax liability?

It's bad today because of several dif things.
XEM hack on coincheck
Facebook cracking down on bitcoin ads
Bitfinex tether uncertainty
Also want to mention that any kind of supposed bad news for bitcoin is enhanced and blown way out of proportion by the mainstream media. Its worse now then ever.
Today for example the headlines read "FB Bans all bitcoin ads", but really they just put more guidelines and rules on what kind of crypto ads you can put up.

If Bitcoin didn't die in 2014 it won't now. Really wondering what will be the price after the next halving. It will be a long bumpy road for sure, and we will have many "war's casualties" that won't make it until then.
Other than that... Yep, Bitcoin is dead again.
im afraid we are in for the same type of bear market cycle seen from late 2014-early 2016, maybe another big rally leading up to the next halving....the last big bear market didnt stop untill the halving in 2016...atleast thats my opinion

with every fork on bitcoin the inflation rate is doubled, if they can lockstep the alt-fork coin prices to bitcoins they have pulled off a very effective dilution strategy to thwart bitcoins powerful deflationary attraction forces ... until bitcoin price dumps hard to purge the parasite bastards
With every fork, forks become increasingly meaningless...

Agreed, after bitcoin gold i just couldnt keep track anymore, there is like 10+ now?

It's not amazing.
How much longer will Tone Vays be invited to these events when he goes up on stage and basically says that other presenters/speakers are running scams?

LMFAO at all the Youtube Crypto personalities that sprang up last year.
While the momentum trade was going in 2017, they all acted like total and seasoned 'Crypto Experts'. Like they knew exactly why Bitcoin, or this shitcoin or that, was going up, and why. They told all their followers that they should invest in this or that.
Now that the momentum trade is over, they are floundering around and haven't got the slightest clue what the crypto market is doing. Fucking hilarious.
I predict that if the market goes sideways for another 6-12 months, most of them will completely vanish from Youtube, or at least 90+% of their followers will unsubscribe and drop off.
Agree with you
In 2014-2016 there wasn't that much content on youtube about bitcoin and crypto and if there was it was mostly educational and informative, the people on there now seem to just shill their "Top 5 picks" and you're right they all put themselves out there as crypto experts. It used to rage me pretty hard that someone would put up videos giving advice when they had only been into crypto for a couple months.
And don't even get me started about the bitconnect youtube shills...

The 2014 rhyme continues , back to 6-7k now again then a slow climb to 11-12 one final time where break out fails and the long slow slide to 2-2.5k at year end can finally begin. Get this price down so we can get these gox coins at decent prices and then ride the 100k train in 2021.
Been worried about this for months...maybe ive been delusional this whole time with the thinking that "another bear market cant last that long, institutional money now".....

cummmonn dude dont say that...i dont want to hear it...

been around since late 2013 and i lived through that 2 year bear market and it sucked, this is what i have been afraid of since december..
I want to believe that a 2 year bear market wont hold because of way more interest and on ramps (exchanges) for buyers...maybe you are right though...
of course one stroke of political/economic instability could change that right?

I scalped my way to a comfortably high entry short again.
Come 6k, make me some money. Come 16k, the insurance fee is already written off as a loss.
I will keep nursing it higher (and possibly still a bit smaller).
My play money grew approximately 20% in the process.
For me at least, it's a tough job. I couldn't do this everyday if my life depended on it.
I'm glad I listened to the furry elephants.
Margin trading? How much leverage?
Variable, approx range 0.5-5.
I prefer < 1 myself. For dummies.
Why do you call this scalping, are you taking a bunch of different positions at the same time on margin?
To me the term scalping means buying selling for really small gains like 1-5%....i could be wrong though

Considering ETH and EOS didn’t exist in 2014, and XRP was a dog, it’s all a bit fishy.
2014 was mostly in fiat. Tried a little with PPC and LTC, but got out as soon as I was sober. ETH earned most in 2015, XRP and EOS earned most in 2017
That’s lovely. Why don’t you toddle off and go buy some $ICX or whatever it is you kids get up to these days. It’s up 46%. Just think, you could be a billionaire before breakfast.
It's just the craze these days, whether BTC maximilist like it or not billions or dollars are flowing into these ICO tokens, doesn't look like it will slow down anytime soon either.
https://www.coindesk.com/waking-dragon-asias-token-economy-is-charging-full-speed-ahead/At-least PPC and LTC still exist today, I wonder how many of these ICO token will still be around in a couple years?

This is what the market looked like when I entered in December 2013. How many of those shitcoins are still around and have value ? LTC and XRP (and I’m open to arguments that LTC is not a shitcoin). Interestingly BTC has outperformed LTC over that time period and is not that far behind XRP in return - I thought the differential was greater.
The only sensible choice back then was to hold BTC and it remains the only sensible choice. We can throw play money at alts but let’s recognise it for what it is - gambling.

I got into the market around that time as well and in hindsight I would have just held all my btc instead of trying to play the altcoin market because I barely broke even and most of the time just traded poorly. You are right, the altcoin market is a lot like gambling, but so is poker and some people tend to win more than they lose. I know a lot of people will disagree with us there but its open to debate.
I also agree that LTC is not a shitcoin, and I have always been interested in a BTC maximalists perspective of why coins like LTC are scams?
If a coin has no ICO and no pre-mine and fair launch of mining then why is it a scam??

Keep wanting to believe that 2014/2015 bear market is unlikely, even Tom Lee said on cnbc fast money the other day that there are WAY more on-ramps than there were back then. Also at end of 2013 when price ran up to 1200 the biggest exchange got hacked (gox obviously), holy buckets are things different now....
But I guess if tether somehow collapsed it could cause a similar systemic dump?

The addition of 3 new assets on Gemini and being licensed by the New York Department of Financial Services (NYDFS) shows Gemini is making a wider spectrum of crypto available to institutional investors, also they offer custody of the institutions investments which has been a big concern for many.
https://www.forbes.com/sites/michaeldelcastillo/2018/05/14/winklevoss-brothers-bitcoin-exchange-adds-zcash/#54449efc6b98Today another news article was released in regards to coinbase offering 4 new services that will include a custody service for institutional investors.
https://www.cnbc.com/2018/05/15/coinbase-bets-big-on-institutional-investors.htmlI don't think its a coincidence that both of these big name crypto exchanges are pin pointing their target market to attract institutional clients, it really does show that there is interest from big money investors. If ONLY retail money can push BTC to 20k, then what will institutional money do? Does that 45k-100k target seem so unlikely?
We will see what happens for the rest of 2018 but I think we could be in for some fireworks.

I would call this a corrective move upwards not only due to technicals but also fiat fleeing legacy markets on a downturn.
Baby boomers fleeing the stock market to invest their life savings in shitcoins? /facepalm. You guys are getting desperate to come up for excuses as to what actually moves the bitcoin market when it's entirely Bitfinex fraud whether it goes up or down.
You really think that a small generation in the USA would have an effect on the crypto market? These markets are open 24/7 and are open to all age groups around the world, we don't care if baby boomers can buy crypto or not when a 13 year old in malaysia can put all his money into bitcoin.

The only omen here is the omen that you are going to die young if you don't figure out a way to get your mind on other things. You, my friend, need a vacation.

You people are seriously trolling. It's Charles Hoskinson trying to pump and dump via Twitter. He made that statement just straight out of left field based on no kind of news or fundamentals or anything. Like he just drank a 12 pack and that was the first idea he had at random. Someone claimed I was a "poor man's Charles Hoskinson" once which makes it even more ridiculous : /.
It was like he just got a call from some investor that said "holy fuck we need to dump these shitcoins but there's no buyers, get on Twitter and do an Anton Antonopoulos pump and dump impersonation!". I would also like to add that MIT is completely compromised for anything cryptocurrency related and it seems like both Gavin and Antonopoulos have hung out around there and given talks.

Tone Vays is right but at this point it doesn't matter. They will exist anyway and many people get scammed because of that. This whole concept (ICO's and shit) will become a massive clusterfuck. (if not already)
Tone Vays also says most altcoins are scams and guess what? He is right again yet altcoins keep coming.
Well many people have already been scammed by worse things than ICOs (bitconnect) for example.
But if most altcoins are scams then that would mean there is almost 135b dollars propping up all these alt-coins. That's more than half of all the money in crypto, how am i supposed to believe that 60% of all the money in crypto is that clueless and invested in scams?

I can create a cryptocurrency with 100 million dollar market cap with $1.
1. Create crypto
2. Pre-mine 100 million coins
3. Wash trade a single coin on a shady exchange in Korea or China for $1.
4. Boom, $100M market cap.
You could probably get passed step 1 considering you are code savy enough, I am not a developer but I imagine it's a lot easier to create a crypto than I think.
But if you just pre-mine a bunch of coins how would you ever get support from anyone or get listed? Who would support you're chain? You would have to be the only one mining it so it would cost a heck of a lot more than 1$.
I just think altcoins don't get enough credit, I wonder how many crypto enthusiast were brought in being exposed to a an altcoin first rather than bitcoin ?

This made me laugh. Good on ya. HODL BTW congrats on becoming hero!
Thanks. I became hero just before the change. I post much less now, so no chance to get merit.
I have basically the same idea as LFC_Bitcoin, except I'm guessing he has more coins than me.
It’s all about having a nice fiat income so you can live nicely. The money we make from bitcoin can buy the real stuff, big house, holiday home etc.
I need a % of my bitcoin profits to work for me though - i.e. bring money in. Otherwise no matter how much you have you’re just spending bitcoin to live & I don’t want to do that.
I’ll sell about 6
BTC at $25,000.
I’ll sell around 50% of my proper stash at $100,000 & invest that properly to make money.
I will then be in a position I never dreamed of until inheritance which will be a long time hopefully.
I owe bitcoin so much. It’s going to make so many of our dreams come true.
Better hope IRS doesn't see you're masterplan here. Yall know they will start coming after people in the coming years.

WTH happened at Coinbase? I see they are back online now.
Pro never hiccupped. Not for me, anyhoo.
Meanwhile on cryptocurrency subreddit:
-This always happens!!
-Tried to cash in but no luck!!!!
-How convenient! It's almost like they know they can take your money and you have no recourse!!!
My condolences for those who got caught in it. All I can report is my own experience. In this case, pro.coinbase.com user nor affected. I offer no explanation. Maybe just because I was already logged in?
https://www.coindesk.com/coinbase-hit-with-outage-as-bitcoin-price-drops-1-8k-in-15-minutesThey don't say specifically if coinbase pro was affected or not but they do say that " it's internal systems appeared to be functional during that period".....
Not to put a tinfoil hat or anything but robinhood also experienced issues during this period, both coinbase and robinhood are us based exchanges, could it be possible that there are geopolitical forces that don't want or want these outages to restrict a certain market from selling? IDK
