Here is your answer. Bitcoin needs to look more like some of these other technologies on this chart before said cycle can be broken by maturity.
Worldwide, Bitcoin adoption is even lower than the few percent it shows here. With only 20 million funded Bitcoin addresses, and at least a few addresses used by each user, Bitcoin is used by at most 0.1% of the world population.

(I can't believe I never posted here, now I can finally get this thread in my New replies list)

Also, I don't like the concept of the stellar foundation tracking every bitcoin registered for its snapshot, then cross referencing that information with the other data it sucked out of people's facebook accounts. I didn't register for its snapshot, but it's a privacy nightmare for anyone who did.
A bit late, but maybe useful for a next time: the Stellar airdrop worked fine with a fake Facebook account. You could even register one through Tor (facebookcorewwwi.onion) and claim Stellar.

Quote
The guy who started the stellar foundation is also responsible for starting gox and ripple. With that track record I don't trust him.
Let's just say he's very good at earning money for himself. But indeed, he's not on my crypto-trust-list.

One of the few charts I can wrap my head around.
Assuming the graph data is accurate: the colors are too red. My first impression from this graph is more negative than positive months, but that's not true.
There are 22 negative and 29 positive months. The positive yellow-orange should be light green.

I take it they won't go after the manipulation done by billionairs (Buffet) or banks (JP Morgan)?

$250 move-up in 3 minutes. Wink
I often notice the following pattern in the Bitcoin price: it's quite stable for hours to days, moving sideways, then suddenly it drops or shoots up in a more or less straight line. After that, it continues moving sideways.
How can that be? I can only think its being manipulated by some whale(s) keepingt he price stable until they need change. If there's a different explanation, I'd like to hear it.

Fucking manipulators. News about Goldman Sachs was fake.
Why do people care so much about what bankers say about Bitcoin? One day they say it's a scam, the next day they want to profit from trading, and now it's this again.
In reality, all they do is try to manipulate the market. Considering manipulation is one of the reasons the SEC rejected the ETF, I wouldn't be surprised if they do this to manipulate who gets to have the first ETF.
Manipulation at this level would probably mean jail time if they do it on the stock market, but because it's crypto, they get away with it.

Bankers, central banks, governments and billionaires have tried to manipulate Bitcoin for years. And I can only think of one reason: they're afraid of something they can't control and can't stop. They wouldn't say this about something unimportant, they also don't say it because they care about investors. And you won't hear them say a painting isn't worth $450 million because it doesn't produce anything and only relies on another buyer paying more for it.
They say it because of their current interests.

As far as I know, there are about 20 million funded Bitcoin addresses. But considering many people have more than one funded address, I think the number of actual Bitcoin owners is much less than 20 million.

I'm more interested in the production cost: Bitcoin is often mentioned as being bad for the environment, but if gold-production costs 20 times more, I'm pretty sure it pollutes a lot more too! It's just using diesel instead of electricity. Why isn't that ever highlighted in the media?

Don't worry, BTC is not going so low. My prediction is that December will be a real struggle, afterwards, the price will begin to recover, whales would probably use mass media to pump the price by consecutive good news.
There's the old investment wisdom, saying you should sell when you hear about an investment at your hairdresser (sorry, I can't find a literal quote to add as a reference). At the end of last year, one of my nieces wanted to buy Bitcoin. That would have been the perfect cue to sell!
There's another old investment wisdom: "the time to buy is when there's blood in the streets" (Rothschild), "even if the blood is your own". Currently, the "Bitcoin is dead" news is stronger than I've ever seen. Based on this old investment wisdom, that would make it the time to buy now.

Note: I don't give investment advice, I'm not buying, I'm not selling. I'm just enjoying the ride up, crying the ride down Tongue

And what is the practical use of LN?
Cheap small transactions and fast confirmations! I've recently installed a LN-wallet, and I already made more transactions on LN than I made on Bitcoin in at least a year.
It makes small payments possible again, such as sending 0.0001 BTC with 0.0000000202 BTC fee.

I'm okay with paying a high fee for a big transaction, but I'd love to be able to use Bitcoin for small transactions too. LN allows much more users to actually use it, as 7 transactions per second can't scale up.

That's quite an offer. Somebody could theoretically use it to find out which members had a history of using the words "bullish" or "buy" right before BTC made a definitive move upward, or "bearish" for the opposite. Would be pretty noisy but possibly still insightful as to finding out who tended to be correct in their calls over time. I don't have enough time to put that kind of analysis together but maybe somebody else does.
I'll keep this thought, a graph showing the "density" of certain words over time could work Smiley

https://btc.com/stats/unconfirmed-tx

107 satoshis to 3 satoshis per vbyte in a matter of minutes.
I think it's the wallet software users are using. People tends to use the recommended fees by the wallet software. Yesterday I had a 1 sat/Byte tx cleared. It was hanging there for last few days but I did not bother.

I think people are overpaying because of ignorance.
See Fees are low, use this opportunity to Consolidate your small inputs!
Wallets all try to compete for the same limited block space, which means that everybody pays more, and blocks are still full. I think the fee market would work much better if most users choose their fee manually. If you're in a hurry: pay enough! But if you're not in a hurry: don't try to compete with other users.
I usually pay 1 or at most a few satoshi per byte, as most of my transactions are not time critical.

Boblawblaw tried messing about with it some time ago.  I think he gave up after having similar experiences to you.

...

Playing with it over the last 4 months has been... well... a bit of a slog TBH as things were approaching the 0.6 release.

Funded about 0.5 BTC to play with across a bunch of channels, pulled out 0.26 BTC after shutting everything down. Fucked around with Satoshi's place a bit, bought some stickers, but I believe most of the 0.24 BTC I didn't get back was blown on channel open/close fees, and possibly just "lost" due to bugs and shit.

 Whatever.

...
Thanks Smiley

Opening and closing channels is indeed quite expensive, but as long as I'm not running a node, I don't need that many channels. I wouldn't dare fund it with anything serious, it's now really just play money.

Who's who on WO?

Here the first 100 WO family members.
Would anyone be interested in seeing a full list of all the users who ever posted in this topic, sorted by post count (highest first)? I can scrape 24000 pages if there is a demand for it Tongue

A couple pages back, some users expressed their interest in some stats. Allow me to quote myself from LoyceV's data on the Wall Observer thread || moon, hodl , fuck, weeee in Meta:

I wasn't sure where to post this, It's obvious the Wall Observer thread has earned it's place on the forum, and for that reason I picked Meta. I don't want it to be burried under dozens of pages of new posts in no time.

Prologue
I've always been reluctant to scrape the massive Wall Observer thread. This changed when Maggiordome notified me about fillippone's post in Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion.

I've scraped the thread up to page 24395. My scraper downloaded 487799 out of 487900 posts. I don't know what happened to the remaining 101 posts.

The most frequent posters
I asked if anyone is interested in a list of users who posted there: 5771 users have posted in the Wall Observer thread, with just over 84 posts on average.

The following users have posted x times in Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion
Merit is based on last Friday's data dump. I only show Merit if there has been at least 1 transaction. If it shows 0 Merit, that means the user has sent Merit, but didn't receive anything. Trust is not shown on the Speculation-board.

Keywords
It turns out the regulars in the Wall Observer thread have more wishes:
-how many lines of text JJG has posted
-which word has been posted the most : moon, hodl , fuck, weeee... ?
-who has posted the most haikus
I haven't counted JJG's lines, and I wouldn't know how to count haikus.
But I did count the number of posts that contain the requested keywords (case insensitive, the text may be part of a longer phrase, including quotes and in some cases the username or personal text). Click the link to see the full list of who posted what when:
moon: 11623 posts
hodl: 20379 posts
fuck: 27580 posts
weeee: 1328 posts

Keyword frequency graphs
Much more interesting than the total, is seeing the frequency of each keyword:

Speaking of which, I'm sure Loyce's scripts are smart enough to weed out quotes when counting keywords?
I could, but I didn't. If it's quoted, I assumed it's still relevant so it counts.

Here's some more data for you guys:

Merit distribution if Bitcointalk had nothing else than Wall Observer (2019-07-01_Mon_17.39h; based on last Friday's Merit data dump)
(See LoyceV's Merit data analysis for the normal version)
For the Wall Observer regulars who don't often visit Meta and aren't familiar with my data: all links (except for Trust lists) lead to a page dedicated to Wall Observer, and the Merit history (with graphs!) has a link to BBCode which you can easily copy/paste (don't plagiarize!) on the forum. I'll use top-Merit-receiver micgoossens' data as a sample:

From LoyceV files last week you had 747 merits on this thread.
This week only 745.

Yes, something strange.
Might be merited on deleted posts?
Some glitch in my table?

Hopefully this is enough to summon sir LoyceV explaining this wonkiness in my data.
Merited deleted posts are still mentioned in merit.all.txt.

Domain WallObserver.tk expires a year from now, I'll see by then if anyone uses it.
All times are set to Amsterdam time.

Limitations:
Images still go through Bitcointalk's image proxy, and they don't load when there are too many on one page. In Firefox a fix is to go to the URL-bar a few times, and press Enter. Just "Reload" doesn't help.
I'm just leaving it here in case anyone things this is useful Smiley If not, please ignore it.

To load all images in the 7 day view, it's easiest to go back and forth between 1d and 7d a few times. Or, if I visit the 7d daily, my browser cache holds most images so the rest works instantly.
(the images still go through Bitcointalk's proxy, and can't load a week's worth of images at once).

If I remember correctly, when you visit the forum without logging in, you see all the edits in the posts with the time of the edition.
The fastest and safest thing is for someone to quote the supposed winner quickly.

edit: Forget it, there are 10 minutes to edit the publication without seeing that it has been edited.

Yeah, that's exactly the problem. The grace period makes it difficult to really know if I a post has been edited right after being posted.

It seems no one really knows how to detect it.
Incorrect. You guys should ask LoyceV for confirmation, but afaik his bot is getting *only* the *initial* *unedited* version of the posts.
http://wallobserver.tk/
I scrape unedited posts indeed, and there's no way for me to know which posts have been edited (without scraping everything) again.

As far as I know:

My http://wallobserver.tk/ site shows the posts as they were within a few seconds after creation. Now that the site is mentioned again: does anyone even use it? The domain is valid for another 8 months, after that it will expire (there's no way I'm going to pay by CC).

Quote from: bitserve on January 19, 2020, 04:10:12 AM
I am thinking about that but... How can I detect if someone uses the edit button in the grace period? Is there a way?

Is your scrapper fast enough to get the original post before any edit/addition is done to it?
Try it Cheesy Loading the page after posting takes a few seconds, editing takes a few seconds, so try Tongue

Quote
What is the delay you are using for your scrapper?
I prefer not to post the exact delay, but I've also noticed it sometimes takes a tad longer (maybe because of lag, and because of the time needed to process the data).

Quote
Or maybe there is a way to retrieve the original/unedited post from bitcointalk?
As far as I know, edits within 10 minutes aren't saved by the forum.

I got the idea for this graph in Investing 1$ every day in bitcoin over the last five years, but the graph I created doesn't only include the last 5 years until today. It includes every consecutive period of 5 years in which Bitcoin had a dollar value, until yesterday.

I don't know if anyone ever made a graph like this before, but I think it adds a nice perspective.

Quote from: LoyceV on February 10, 2020, 08:25:47 PM
Results:
Image loading...
Data source: https://coinmetrics.io/newdata/btc.csv
Note: I had to use a logarithmic scale to make the graph readable.

Details:
The first 5 year period starts on July 18, 2010, when Bitcoin is valued at $0.08584. On this day, $1 buys 11.64958062BTC.
After spending $1 on Bitcoin every day for 5 years (I used 1826 days), it's July 17 2015.
July 17, 2015 is the very first data point in the graph: the most left red and blue dots.
The last data point (the most right red and blue dots) represent the investment period that ended on February 9, 2020, and started 5 years before that date.

The obvious
Early adopters had the best bet. Nothing new here!
Investing a total of $1826 in Bitcoin, for 5 years, with a dollar per day, would have gotten you $10,000 or more at the end of your 5 years, no matter when you started!
The amount of Bitcoin you can buy using "dollar cost averaging" for 5 years in a row has continuously been declining. No exceptions!
The dollar equivalent seems to have touched a bottom at $10,000.

Investment advice
I don't do that! This graph is based on historic data, if I'd know the future, I'd be rich!

That's something you can arrange when a brick and mortar bank starts offering crypto services. Paying a dollar (okay a euro for me) per day is easy to automate, I can do it for stock, it would be great to do it for Bitcoin.
There's no point in withdrawing a dollar worth of Bitcoin per day, but twice a year would work.

If bitcoin drops below $5,500, I'll delete this entire thread. Bring it, bears!

Archived!

Can you please archive all of 26281 pages?

I recommend contacting LoyceV asap, he has the resources for this.
Edit: And he loves to scoop and scrape.
The correct URL is http://loyce.club/archive/topics/17/178336.html, although it only has 33794 of the last posts.
My other project has the first 2628 pages only, I'll continu that much later when my scraper is done with it's current tasks (probably around August).
