Silk Road down due to DDOS:

Quote from: Dread Pirate Roberts
-UPDATE (04/24/2013 0714 UTC): "The downtime of the past couple days, and especially the past 24 hours has been confirmed to be due to a deliberate attack from what appears to be an individual. There appears to be no security breach, only disruption of availability. The attack appears to be DoS in nature and is likely an exploit at the Tor network level. The site will be down or very slow until a solution can be found, which we will work tirelessly to find. Thank you for your patience." http://dkn255hz262ypmii.onion/index.php?topic=151563.0

-UPDATE (04/24/2013 1647 UTC): Nothing new to report, but I just thought I'd let everyone know that I am still here and we're doing everything we can to put and end to all of this. I'm really proud to be a part of this community. You all have been showing your class through all of this.

-UPDATE (04/24/2013 1222 UTC): We are starting to get a handle on how the attack is being run. It will likely take many hours to eventually overcome, but we are 100% committed to getting the site running in peak form again. It is still possible to access here and there, so we are leaving the site open for those who want to try to gain access, but it will be tough until we can effectively counter the attack.

Still, some really interesting numbers quoted:

January: 10 000 new customers.
February: 15 000 new customers.
March: 70 000 new customers.
April: 120 000 new customers. (first half)

With 11M bitcoins in existence, there is now room for less than fifty bitcoins, on average, per Mt.Gox customer.

If you have more than fifty bitcoins, congratulations, you are the wealthy elite. Tongue

What's interesting right now is that we are just beginning to enter a phase of institutional interest, and, I think, as luck would have it for larger investors, people were scared into putting lots of bitcoin back on MtGox.  The ask depth is looking very healthy, and that is exactly what is needed and wanted by people who want to invest $100k+.  I think in the next 2 years we could see the bid depth on MtGox reach around $50 million, and the price will need to adjust upward (and there will be a subsequent dramatic correction, no doubt).

I think that the bid depth can reach $50 million by June 1st 2013.

It doesn't take much interested to add up to $50 million waiting on the exchange to buy bitcoins.

Unless Mark Karpeles is lying, there's already much, much more than that waiting at Mt.Gox, off the book.

I believe he stated that MtGox was receiving $5M to $20M per day as of early April. (Reuters Interview)

They have more than 215 000 brand new customers Q1 2013 + the first half of April alone.

We're may have to start talking in terms of mBTC / μBTC much sooner than I would have expected only a few weeks/months ago.

Because what you’re talking about right now is, for the next three to five years, an unbelievably better stored value. It is gold 2.0. Right? The value of gold that hedges the world economy, about $9 trillion, right? Thirteen hundred an ounce, of which only a hundred to a hundred and fifty dollars is the actual production value. So all the rest is imputed….

Well, guess what? I can do the same thing with Bitcoin only I can do it outside the purview of every single government. It’s being used everywhere you would think it would be used. Russia, Iran, Iraq, Egypt, Venezuela, Argenina. Everywhere you have currency pressure. Everywhere you want to basically shield your assets. And then, after that, it will probably become a payment mechanism.

Guys, it's only a 1000btc wall... It's not trying to manipulate or anything, he just wants to sell, poor him...

You may be right, as his wall is being nibbled on quite a bit.   I find it surprising that selling pressure is so low that hardly any asks are being placed beneath it.   He has to know if he backed the wall to 105, he would end up with $5k more . . .   Strange not to at this point unless he is trying to manipulate, very odd.

He's setting up a triangle. 104 is the center-line.

Used 0.01 add/rem bidspamming to quench volume of the uptrend. (Lag hovered at 1-2 minutes during insignificant price action.)

(Visible on Clark Moody if you check "Show Depth Messages in Console.")

Placed the top wall to force creation of the triangle, placed the mid wall to contain it, and lastly the lower wall to finish it.

You can see it for yourself in DougTanner's wallpic.

But why aren't you taking the high of the $265 candle?
You can make many, many shapes if you can choose any length of candle.

that high is very obviously an outlier.

the process of drawing the 'correct' triangle is as follows: identify the possible top and bottom trendlines with the greatest number of points of contact, disregarding outliers. we can even disregard the highs that break robust (multi-point) trendlines because that itself is evidence that they are outliers, based on the theories of triangle consolidation patterns.

in the picture above, there are 4 possible robust lines, all with 2 points of contact (the minimum for a unique line). i've only drawn 3, can you see the other? hint: what if you assume that the lowest price points of the two recent green bottoms are outliers?

as you can see, there are many possible triangles. determining which is the best fit is a messy process that i'm still refining.

IOW: It doesn't fit the story? (Good question, frozenlock.)

if that was difficult to parse, the idea is that the greater the number of points of contact, the more robust the trendline is.
this is because, as frozen pointed out, any line at all can be drawn across one point, two points is enough to define an arbitrary unique line, but three points is a 'coincidence', or in statistics terms, a correlation.

i admit that the lines above only have 2 points of contact. the evidence for their robustness is in the price movement right now.

Not difficult to parse. Only arbitrary.

The 260ies marked the on-trend inevitable climax (which had to happen somewhere, and happened to happen there) of of the trend, not an outlier of that trend.

Discarding the last, crucial day in favour of the day before (which was not an outlier? if so, why?) seems disingenous.

As Frozenlock points out:

Quote from: Frozenlock on May 06, 2013, 07:19:28 AM

You are saying you can use any wick and/or candle, without your method providing guidance.

And proceed to arbitrarily discard any inconvenient data, after you've found a pattern you like.

It is this need to discard data you don't like for the pattern to hold that I find worrying.

a) they were defrauded or had their private keys stolen by hotel staff, and
b) rptiela estimates the damage to be in the range of 100k btc (or, as he helpfully points out, about 9M Euro).

Sounds like quite the successful conference, I must say. /snark

I think the probability of staying alive until tomorrow has dramatically increased, as the first 24 hours after the evacuation did not see any violence or threats thereof. Everything else is still uncertain however, but I don't believe that the operative capability of my supernode or the Bitcoin Supernode Network in general have been, will be, or can be endangered. The general comment would be along the lines: "Bitcoin user not affected."

Quote from: rpietila on May 13, 2013, 07:15:25 PM
I really hope you real life is not in danger, but honestly i don't get WTF is going on here.

It is safer to fear for your life when there is no danger, than it is to not fear when there is.
Which category does keeping us all in suspense fall under?!  If i don't find out something soon I'll pee my pants!!!!

I spent 8 days before the summit in Haikko preparing for it. Then during the 24 hours after it started (opening ceremony was Thursday 14:00, Finland time is used if no otherwise mention), something went seriously wrong so many times that I felt the probability of it having been a coincidence had increased to well above zero.

When I ordered an investigation on the events, I did not have the opportunity of taking adequate care of my summit, my family, my sleeping, my water or my food. After about 40 hours of rather intense events, after which I was fully content to die, since there is nothing in this life that I can think of I would seriously miss (and believe me I can think of things that most of you can not), I had also exhausted my available energy. I did not feel I would have been able to keep my posture for any more time.

So I ordered a general evacuation of the summit and went fully offline for the time between Sunday 13:00 and roughly now. Since I don't have too much stress now, I think I can work approximately 16-18 hours per day indefinitely, provided that I take about 1 day off every 5 days.

Now I try hard to minimize the risk to the well-being of anyone, and to raise the stakes in the game described as follows: if someone actually copied the private keys there (I had access to over 6000 bitcoins unencrypted, open in my computer browser windows during the time it was compromised), he will have to suffer the fact becoming public in its entirety + all the details, if he spends the bitcoins before I have the time to spend them myself. Due to extensive precautions involved, it will take me approximately a week of calendar time + several thousand dollars, to fully ensure that the bitcoins are safe, by sending them to uncompromised addresses. I plan to concentrate on that during this week.

tl;dr: Fear and Loathing in Finland... The Bitcoin Supernode summit is decadent and depraved.

is there any known reasons for this rise in price?

1) WebMoney adopts bitcoin
2) PayPal founders get into bitcoin
3) Return to upward trend before Dwolla news came out, we were at $119 testing 120 back then.
4) Bitcoin conference

And probably more reasons I'm not thinking about right now.

Quote from: Wall Street Journal
By JEFFREY SPARSHOTT
WASHINGTON—The top U.S. anti-money-laundering regulator on Monday told a Bitcoin trade group that exchanges for the virtual currency must follow the same rules as established financial institutions, highlighting the government's efforts to keep tabs on a small but growing segment of the financial world.

The Treasury Department's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, or Fincen, hosted the Bitcoin Foundation and other regulators and law-enforcement officials as the sides grapple with the rise of virtual currencies. Such digital money isn't backed by a central government and often, as with Bitcoin, isn't controlled by any central entity.

"Fincen's recent guidance concerning virtual currencies made clear that virtual currency administrators and exchangers that provide services within the U.S. must register with Fincen as money-services businesses and that they share similar regulatory responsibilities with other financial institutions,"
said Jennifer Shasky-Calvery, director of the Treasury Department's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, in a statement after the meeting.

Ms. Shasky's comments to the foundation repeat earlier messages. Fincen in March published guidelines that placed virtual-currency exchanges under the same broad anti-money-laundering requirements as traditional money-transmission businesses such as Western Union Co.

The move followed rising concern that the currencies, which allow anonymous transactions, could be used for illicit purposes.

Ms. Shasky described Monday's meeting as part of an "ongoing dialogue" with regulated financial industries and said she looked forward to further communication.

Before the meeting, Patrick Murck, general counsel for the Bitcoin Foundation, said he would make a presentation and answer questions from government officials.

The trade group and some Bitcoin companies say they support efforts to ensure that the industry is operating in compliance with certain laws. They contend that will help legitimize the fledgling industry and keep out bad players who want to use the currency for illegal activities.

Monday's event in part grew out of a June virtual currency conference in Washington, D.C., where Ms. Shasky met with investors and industry officials, and told them that they had nothing to fear from the government as long as they followed U.S. financial rules.

The Federal Reserve, Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, Internal Revenue Service, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Secret Service, Securities and Exchange Commission and others joined Monday's session.

Judge Orders CoinLab to Pay Up…in Bitcoin

A well-known bitcoin company has been ordered by a judge to produce and deliver the virtual currency to a New York investment firm that accused it of reneging on their contractual agreement.

Judge Robert W. Sweet of U.S. district court for the southern district of New York barred CoinLab Inc. from delivering the virtual currency to any other parties before it meets its obligation to Bitvestment LLC.

The dispute underscores the frenzy surrounding bitcoin, a virtual currency that isn’t backed by a central bank. It is produced electronically using computers, and enthusiasts trade it on exchanges and privately. Some merchants are now accepting bitcoin as a method of payment.

Bitvestment sued CoinLab last week for breach of contract, contending that the Bainbridge, Wash.-based company isn’t living up to its obligation to provide 8,000 bitcoin under an August arrangement between the two firms.
One bitcoin was worth $295 Thursday afternoon on the volatile Tokyo-based Mt. Gox exchange on Thursday, giving the disputed 8,000 bitcoin a value of $2.36 million.

The process of generating bicoin is known in the industry as “mining.”

CoinLab Chief Executive Peter Vessenes has said that the lawsuit was a contributing factor in last week’s bankruptcy filing of CoinLab’s mining unit, which is called Alydian Inc.
Mr. Vessenes is also chairman of the Bitcoin Foundation, a nonprofit trade group that promotes the virtual currency.

Mr. Vessenes noted in an email on Thursday that CoinLab itself has no mining operations, but “of course we will comply (with the judge’s order) as well as we’re able.” It isn’t clear if Alydian is still generating bitcoin while it is under bankruptcy protection.

He also said that CoinLab was pleased that the judge denied other requests from BitVestment, such as seeking certain financial data from officers of CoinLab and Alydian.

“We continue to treat this as a simple contract dispute case, and feel confident on the merits of the case,” Mr. Vessenes said.

Bryan Reyhani, a lawyer representing Bitvestment in the case, declined to comment on the judge’s ruling.

As Bitcoin Plunges 25% On Government Scrutiny, The First BTC "Fair Value" Reco Has A Stunning Price Target

Let’s use a broad guesstimate. One Bitcoin should theoretically be worth 700 ounces of gold or pretty close to $1,000,000, if we adjust existing supply of both to equal eachother. One BTC is currently worth 0.14 ounces of gold. That gives BTC an upside of 5000 times to equal the current price of gold, supply adjusted. Clearly, I and everyone else believes that Gold may well be much higher than here in the next 5 to 10 years, thus versus the US Dollar the upside for BTC could be multiples of that. Now, before you shake your head, simply go back to the chart of Gold versus the US Dollar and just recognise that it has risen 8750% since the 1920s. And just remember that Microsoft rose 61,000% from its IPO to it’s peak. Considering what we know about the world, I personally believe that Bitcoin may well explode in value as more and more people begin to use it. If you stuck $5,000 into Bitcoins and each Bitcoin did go up to a gold equivalent of let’s say, only 100 ounces of gold (not the potential fair value of 700), then at current prices your Bitcoin stash would be worth $3.3m.

Just to make sure that when this industry takes off the US will be part of it and not lagging behind!

+ 1

Like it or not, regulation is what's going to take bitcoin mainstream, and is therefore, very bullish.

Hmm... Yes, but this is the Department of Financial Services of New York and...

Quote from: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economy_of_new_york_city#Finance

The New York Stock Exchange, located on Wall Street, and the NASDAQ are the world's first and second largest stock exchanges, respectively, when measured by average daily trading volume and overall market capitalization.[21]

Financial services account for more than 35 percent of the city's employment income.[22]

New York City has been a leading center of finance in the world economy since the end of World War I.[23]

As of August, 2008 the city's financial services industry employs 344,700 workers.[24]

Manhattan is home to six major stock, commodities and futures exchanges:

American Stock Exchange, International Securities Exchange, NASDAQ, New York Board of Trade, New York Mercantile Exchange, and New York Stock Exchange.

This contributes to New York City being a major financial service exporter, both within the United States and globally.

The 344,700 workers in the finance industry collect more than half of all the wages paid in Manhattan, although they hold fewer than one of every six jobs in the borough.

The pay gap between them and the 1.5 million other workers in Manhattan continues to widen, causing some economists to worry about the city’s growing dependence on their extraordinary incomes.

I'd say NYC is probably the one place that has the most to fear from Bitcoin out of all the cities in all the world.  Smiley

Let me reprhrase this then... Bitcoin bulls go one step further to tell you not only is Bitcoin risk-free but that if you aren't holding bitcoins, you are taking a risk because holding fiat is risky and bitcoin is clearly the way out of that risk. So bitcoin is not only risk free, but acts as an inverse risk. It is the infallible investment made in heaven and you you need to buy buy buy or die. They are not only going to quell your fears about holding bitcoin but make you fear NOT holding bitcoin. Because bitcoin is the solution for the apocalypse and when the system fails, bitcoiners will become filthy rich. It is the DESTINY. Bitcoin is like a rapture and you need to be on board or be left to perish.

Pretty much correct. Unlike most religions, however, you can choose to invest whichever portion of your assets you like, and trade the position in an out as you wish. This flexibility makes it difficult for traditional religions to compete.

I think it's called 'monotheism'.

Monocoinism: "There is no coin but Bitcoin and Satoshi is the messenger of God."

Hey ya'll. Jesse from Kraken here.
Today I have submitted my resignation from the Board of Ripple Labs. While I care about the people who work there and I wish the company the best, I cannot personally continue to support the business.

I believe that the technology and the protocol hold great promise, and have since the beginning, which is why I was the company’s first investor. Since Jed's departure, the management of the company has taken a different direction. Sadly, the vision Jed and I had for the project in the early days has been lost. I’m no longer confident in the management nor the company’s ability to recover from the founders’ perplexing allocation to themselves of 20% of the XRP, which I had hoped until recently would be returned. Prior to Jed's departure from Ripple, I had asked the founders to return their XRP to the company. Jed agreed but Chris declined—leaving a stalemate. This afternoon, I revisited the allocation discussion with the pair and again, where Jed was open, Chris was hostile.

As an investor, of course, I hope that Ripple Labs will overcome its hurdles and prove my lack of confidence misplaced. Unfortunately, unlike the founders, I don’t have swathes of XRP to dump if I don't think it's working out.

By the way bitcoin is not more a store of value than ripple... seriously...

Ripple & Stellar both got rekt this weekend.

Quote
Dear Justcoin user,

You are receiving this email because you have a balance of XRP at Justcoin. XRP deposits, withdrawals and trading have been disabled for the last three days. This is an explanation of what has happened and what the status is.

A network-wide weakness in how both Ripple and Stellar communicated transactions was exploited by an unknown third-party to to deposit false IOUs through Ripple/Stellar to Justcoin. These were consequently withdrawn to their own payment networks as native currencies. The result was that our hotwallets were emptied. Most of our customers' funds is in cold storage but the amounts were still significant. Justcoin will not operate as a fractional reserve and therefore we decided to lock down all services affected until we had a solution ready.

Justcoin cannot and will not accept taking the responsibility for this weakness in the network. It is caused by a feature that is poorly documented and has been present in both Ripple and Stellar for a long time. Other gateways, exchanges and native transaction explorers have also been affected. There is also documented that the security vulnerability has been known by the network developers for at least 2 months without any kind of explicit and direct warning to affected gateways and other services. A thorough and technical explanation of the weakness can be read here: https://medium.com/@...ld-29aaefd8a7ac .

The result is that as of now there will be imposed a partial 'hold' on all XRP balances. This hold will be representing the amount of XRP that is missing. Deposits will be disabled until we are 100% confident that we are no longer affected by this weakness or any other yet undiscovered. Deposits that have been made between the shutdown and now will be credited in full once deposits are opened. Trading and withdrawal of the XRP that is not on hold is now enabled. Please allow delays on withdrawals due to moving of funds from cold storage to hot wallet. The percentage of each XRP balance that is on partial hold is 23.27%.

We can assure you that it is our intention that the partial holds will be lifted. We are looking at different options and are having a dialogue with Ripple Labs and Stellar foundation. We will try to figure out a way to solve this, one way or another. Expect regular updates.

We are terribly sorry for the situation but are asking for your understanding and patience. If you have any questions that are not answered here please don't hesitate to ask. Allow some time for us to answer as our support is under high pressure at this time.

Sincerely,

You wanna cut out the middleman? Don't use Bitcoin then.

Bitcoin: Bob → Bank → Bitcoin exchange → Bitcoin exchange → Bank → Alice

Bank transfer: Bob → Bank → Bank → Alice

Cash: Bob → Alice

Bank transfer:

http://gendal.me/2013/11/24/a-simple-explanation-of-how-money-moves-around-the-banking-system/

Bitcoin allows:

Bitcoin: Bob → Bank → Bitcoin exchange → Bitcoin exchange → Bank → Alice
or
Bitcoin: Bob → Bank → Coinbase →Alice
or
Bitcoin: Bob → Circle → Alice

or just

Bitcoin: Bob → Alice

And now that Alice has some Bitcoin:

Alice → Anyone

They said there would be no extension possible the last time until after the deadline. Then they not only gave them an extension but also found extra emergency money to throw at them for keeping things afloat until the extension's deadline. If Greece is having a referendum about it on 5th July the institutions could well refuse an extension, then change their minds and grant one.

Hint: Monday is coming... tick tock, tick tock...

You didn't answer me my brother.

Most probably there will be Grexit, right ?

If yes, how this will affect bitcoin ?

Greece imposes capital controls.  Greek banks insolvent.  Greece bails-in banks partially through retail depositors.  People realize advantage of holding a currency where imposing capital controls / seizing deposits is much harder to do.

If it goes like this, it will be so late to adopt bitcoin by Greek people, or I'm mistaken ?
