Need more Bitcoin.
Wondering if I should sell my ex-girlfriend's old jewelry she gave me as collateral toward a Laptop back in 2010.
She never paid me back, and I haven't heard from her in years.
Or just keep it since it's gold.

If you just had sold the gold for BTC in 2010

But yeah, sell, hold and be happy in 1-2-3 years.
Just hope it's not plate.
who cares, it is the collateral for a laptop. $1000 of gold or $1000 of plate is the same.
Laptops are definitely depreciating assets.
So are most girlfriends
Haha... thanks for the advice guys.

I love having BTC over 600. Anything in the high 500's just feels like it's bound to cave into the 550 support but above 600 it seems like it's about to take off. Just psychological, non-TA.

hot off the price heres a list of the prices for each block so far.
1 - Pantera - $900
2 - SecondMarket - $750
3 - SecondMarket - $700
4 - DRW Trading Group - $700
5 - Coinbase - $685
6 - Rangeley Capital - $660
7 - SecondMarket - $651
8 - Coinbase - $640
9 - Matrix Capital Management - $601
Block 10 - Yelp - $626
Is this list real?
Seems very unlikely that SecondMarket would enter a bid itself. Can people see why that would be a big ethical problem?
no not real
No one will bid at $900. That's nonsense
Agree why anyone want to bid @900, if they want they will easily buy 3k coins far below of 900$.
Silk Road Coins are collectible though, said to come with seal by the U.S. Marshals.
Imagine finding a briefcase of Al Capone's hundred dollar bills. Those would also carry a premium on the open market.

Agreed. $600 within reach (<12h).
Then: rally time to 650, maybe higher, touching 700?
Then then: falling back below 640, and eventually re-testing 530.
So say we all? So say we all!

Where "touching 700" ended up as $683, and "re-testing 530" as $538. Close enough, no?

After Dish Network, Newegg, and now Dell, I've come to the conclusion that merchant adoption in itself should have no long term effect on price. Especially when it's being instantly converted back to FIAT. Since BTC can be split 8 decimal places, there should never be a shortage of supply when used as a transport protocol.
JMHO.
Short of a nation having a financial crisis, I think we need some hedge fund money that would actually keep BTC, and thus decrease circulation.

Why what's happening?
I'm being a bit overly dramatic but...

Bitfinex has millions leveraged over $600. They need to do automated margin calls or rollbacks on leveraged trades. That means further selling or erasing the bad trade and pretending it never happened. Bitfinex has been rolling back bad trades lately but they can't do that forever.

I'm so damn tired of these dumpers and these people putting up ask walls the minute we're about to go up.
It's like they do everything they can to make sure the price doesn't go above 600.
Sooooo tired of it.
this is what is happening .. and if you are a bull you should be happy about it.
put walls on important points fibs or psychological round numbers.. or at tops .. like 680 was a a good point.. since market was rallied out..
others will put asks infront of you.. and with price going down .. others will add asksk..
this way ppl who want to buy in "cheap" (anything below 600 is cheap).. can..
because we gonne test ath anyways.. so doubling investment is as good as sure.
now big players are slowly buying in. with as good as no slippage..
once the market is ready to go up .. and it will at some point..
suddenly you'll be looking at thin ask side on orderbook and only nice ask sharkwalls in higher prices.. which attract them buyers.. the sharkwalls are the whales slowly selling up ... they gonne push up as hard they can so they can keep on selling higher and higher..
it's all about waiting, and waiting and waiting.. and don't lose coins trying to trade..
at this point.. i only buy new coins.. dont care much about the price.. aslong it's below 600.
Yea, I'm still in accumulation but very close to my near term goals.
Anything below 600 is fine, above 600 and I become a hesitant buyer.
I don't want BTC to run away from me far above 600 before I've finished with my current accumulation targets.

interesting post, i'm hoping we test 540 to see if these figures are accurate.

Can someone explain this sentence to the non-finance literate?
"Conclusion if we break below $550 I expect the market to get VERY fast with cascading margin calls on bfx. Admittedly we might need some FUD to get there but those price levels are at least in sight "
If the price falls below $540, those that borrowed at $650 do not have enough collateral to sustain their positions. Bitfinex will force them to sell.
As for $550 that's a technical point in the charts that we've bounced off a few times. To break that support means longs are throwing in the towel.

Oh by the way, I got the Coinbase brush off this morning...the message about exceeding limits. But I just now bought 0.2 BTC with no problem. Not sure if it means they resolved the issue or if the buy was just so small.
I think the Coinbase issue was causing no buy support at Bitstamp. I tried to login several times at 510 then 500 but got that exceeded limits error (blessing in disguise).
Then, once it hit the 490's it started working again and I was finally able to purchase.

That message just means at that time, the broker Coinbase can't guarantee the buy with their exchange Bitstamp. It does not mean that they held off on purchasing all Bitcoins until Friday the 22nd.

No hardware is profitable now in mining, unless you can get it for FREE. Not even Gen 3 hardware can ROI 35-40% back of hardware cost when they come out. Or you have no cost for electricity and can get hardware at big discount because the capital investment for the equipment will never mine it back.
You actually can make ROI if you have solar panels or some other free source of eletricity so you can run your miners 24/7 for free. And with selling mining contract you could make even more if you would count the cost of electricity and make the customer pay for it.

Someone noted that the LocalBitcoins BTC:USD volume has been increasing:

My short term outlook as a person that has a local advertisement to buy BTC at Bitstamp. These are the OTC trenches outside of the manipulated buy & sell wall exchanges.
Sellers come out in droves when BTC is above 500. I don't have enough money to keep up with all the sell offers over 500 and I can discount Bitstamp to bring out the truly desperate sellers.
At this current price in the 470-480 there is a huge lack of sellers, nada, for the last few weeks I haven't bought OTC. My conclusion is that there are a lot of holders stuck above 500 that are willing to break even or sell at a slight loss. Any rise above 500 is being met with strong sell resistance in the world of OTC.

I don't understand why holders are selling their btc
People that hold btc are doing so because they believe that it will be used worldwide by pretty much everybody, right? (="going to the moon")
This means that each btc will be worth thousands (or millions) of dollars, according to this thery.
In this view, btc are underpriced now... so why sell?
The only possible answer would be that they don't really believe in this technology, I guess
I got in this Spring around $455. Was proud of my paper wallets watching BTC rise to $680. Sold last month above my buy-in.
As a trader, never let a winner turn into a loser. Lastly, don't fall in love with a stock (or Coin).

They aren't leaving, just selling now to buy more later. Most people want to have as much BTC as possible and the way to do it is to buy as cheap sa possible.
Most of the people who sold below $400 will eventually buy back.

No. I really doubt that the price wont rebound at some point in time to maybe $500, possibly $1000, but to me the end game is always double digits.. its just a matter of how long the ship can float. But again, bitcoin is like a lottery ticket to me.. with much better odds.
No manipulation?

Online poker is still a decent moneymaker up to 1/2 cash if you play well. The problem is most who say it's hard to make money nowadays usually got spoiled back in the day when you could be a mediocre player and still win.
Yep, just bought BTC locally from an online poker player. He had a ton of BTC won a few hundred ago he needed converted to cash. And with Bitfinex not processing wires yesterday due to a holiday in Taiwan, it became the perfect match.
I sent the BTC to Bitfinex and converted it to FIAT for more play money. Cheaper than a wire.

there is a fundamental misconception in your analysis that miners dump the coins they mine on exchanges, effectively putting pressure on the price.
in reality, there is a high probability that most of the mined coins, if sold, are sold in bulk to brokers OFF-exchange. there are numerous brokers out there offering to buy in bulk at a premium and considering privacy issues and exchange slippage it only makes sense for miners to get into supply agreements with them.
Close, but in reality miners sell at a discount to OTC resellers, in cash, to avoid taxes. This is true for many of the Chinese miners.
Those OTC resellers turn around, and sell OTC at a premium to clients that want to avoid KYC compliance (no Coinbase, no exchanges).

Dumpers and pumpers waiting on confirmation of results or something. Where is the insiderrr infooo lol
And then they will pump and dump. So what's the point?
If you abandon your illusions about bitcoin fixing all of worlds financial problems, while making a bunch of dumb people rich, whose only ability is to buy coin and sit on their ass, then you could actually enjoy these constant pumps and dumps. The winners in this game are those who have proper timing. If you're unable to time your trades, then you should play different games.
While nobody can time the market all the time, this is some of the best advice I've read in this thread.
I've been winning by doing automated trades based on limit orders from seeing support and resistance levels. To buy when everybody panics and sell when traders are in jubilation is too difficult for the typical human. Just leave it to an automated process.

If you say anything but "up up up" and "to da moon" guaranteed you're going to offend some people on here.
Its not that.
Pretty sure it is that.
Most bears around here got into bitcoin due to media hype either around November 2013 or later and hence have only seen a downward market which is blinding them to the future of digital decentralized and programmable money. These bears are the get rick quick types that are pissed that bitcoin hasn't made them millionaires yet.
You mean like that JayJuanGee guy? Quite the bear he is.
Anyway, can you blame people for being disillusioned when all the "respected" and "reputable" permabulls on here were screaming "OMFG BUY BUY BUY WE WILL NEVER SEE BELOW 1000 AGAIN!" You know, the same guys who cry about bears when the price goes down?
People that have been around a while have been treated really well by bitcoin and have gained great wealth with more to come with time. If your a bear and hoping to "strike it rich" buy some bitcoin and wait a while FFS, shit doesn't happen overnight.
People that have been around for a while have been fortunate to see a huge bubble, but that won't stop people like you from telling new people to buy as if $100k per BTC were a foregone conclusion. Seriously, if you do have that crystal ball that assures you of that, you can probably use it to make money in a whole lot of other ways, too.

I would normally have expected more of a drop over a banking holiday weekend
It seems that banks will be closed in China from 2015-02-18 to 2015-02-24 inclusive, for the Chinese New Year holidays;
give or take a couple of days:
http://www.123newyear.com/bank-holidays-2015/china.htmlIIRC, in 2014 Chinese banks were closed from 2014-01-30 to 2014-02-04, and did not fully open until 2014-02-07. Price was relatively stable during that week (mostly 800--815), but dropped on 2014-02-07 to ~700 and kept trending down since then.
Yea, we won't have any incoming liquidity to the Chinese Exchanges from this week until mid next week, at the earliest.
I trade on Bitfinex so I had to wire a ton of cash last week.

Current market conditions are a bit alarming to me.
A lot of shorts have been closed, but there is plenty now available to short.
Using that logic: The employment market is alarming. A lot of people have been hired, but that means more people could lose their jobs.
Probably means that there is less chance of a short squeeze at these low depths.
And it's more likely that they'll re-load their short positions on any signs of strength.

Why should I believe that bro ? Although I want that for sure.
I might ask you a similar question. Why do you believe that the price won't rise?
I've seen and heard different opinions on my situations especially Grexit. Some are saying that it will have a minor impact on Bitcoin or none, while others are saying the exact opposite. Wouldn't their best bet be Bitcoin and/or gold in case that Grexit actually happens?
I'm pretty sure the price will rise, and I'm not looking for 6 months, 1 year, or 5 years, my target is a decade from now.
But I always like to add reasons for my arsenal.
Bitcoin can't be considered yet to be a safe heaven, even bitcoin enthusiast can't consider it a safe heaven.
Plus, Greek people are not advanced in the modern IT to know about Bitcoin yet.
Via OTC like local bitcoins, in the US it's the poorest demographics like African Americans and Latinos that are the strongest buyers of Bitcoin. Lots of them are unbanked or unbankable for whatever reason. This is for usage, not for investment purposes.
The non-minorities are the sellers.

There was a big gap when no trades occurred and all the other exchanges were trading during it. There have been so many gaps when trading was stopped on Bitfinex that I have come to expect it now.
the conversation with the bitfinex CTO yesterday night showed pretty clearly how incompetent they are. And as it seems there is no sign for it to get better anytime in the near future.
I don't understand why there are still so many people still stay there and exposing their self of getting screwed once we get some volatility again...

Ok Bitfinex apparently was migrating to a new multisig wallet. When the Withdrawals started working again they did a double send, one from the old and one from the new. So I received duplicate Bitcoin transactions and double the Bitcoin at my destination address. Confirmed with another Bitfinex user.
A few hours later, once they figured it their blunder they deducted the respective amount from the current USD deposits.

Are you putting your money where your mouth is?
To me seems risky
Yea, would take some balls to short here at 327, even though we saw 309 a couple days ago.
Margin shorts vs longs on Bitfinex and OkCoin suggests probable upward movement once the work week begins.

Hey, I've just noticed a pattern that this crash fits into, but it's only visible at very long range. (You need a big screen preferably to see this - pull the browser page out wide if you can to grow the image to full size. Sorry I couldn't get the pattern very visible at small scale).
This correction may not be as bearish as we think and seems to fall into a "family" of profit taking moves associated with the rise that started back around July 2015.
It appears that every 7-8 months (every 4-5 months earlier in the rise) there's a big profit take like this which always happens at the top of a spike when the market gets ahead of itself. (I call them "propellor corrections" because they look like an aircraft propellor from side on since the price corrects to about the same distance below the trend line as the 'overheat' got above it). All the same there's a longer, underlying trend where the upwards revaluation grows steadily steeper, even despite these crashes along the way.
When the pressure-relief gasket blows on these bubbles it always corrects to just below the top of the previous propellor pattern. Same every time but increasing in size. Then there's a period of consolidation, followed by a slow rise, then steep rise and another gasket-blow.
Each time the correction gets bigger, but it still seems to stick to the rule of dropping to just below the last spike so that the growth trend isn't broken. I now think I'm not the only one to have noticed this and that big players are actively trading this pattern, watching for the overheat-spike and knowing exactly when to profit take, driving that bubble into full temporary reverse with shorts for maximum profit. But they also must know how far to take it because the last spike gives the reference level.
This one was perfectly timed - 7 months exactly.
Judging by its size and perfectly placed timing, we could be in for a very big rise over the next 8 months if the long term trend continues because the vertical distance between each "overheat" phase increases each time by about 60% to 70%.
Just sayin. Context is everything

The (alleged) Gox ATH was within a couple of $ of gold parity back in 2013 IIRC.
It's debatable if GOX can be called an ATH, since it was fake coins and you couldn't withdraw coins or FIAT at that time.

Bitcoin was on Bloomberg live TV about 15 minutes ago, interviewing some guy about the ETF.
They weren't sure if the Winklevoss twins would use their own coin or have to buy more on the open market.
Whatever the case, they said there's going to be a huge run on Bitcoin in the event the SEC passes. Very bullish.
Hope they archive it soon.

Ok, so hardware wallet: Trezor or Ledger? I heard about Case before, or is that too much?
There is also crypto steel, or metal wallets. (also plastic wallets, kiddy alphabet wallets, engraved wood or metal wallets, etc, whatever; they're all "paper".)
I use Ledger, love it. Much of my choice was liking the way it looks over the Trezor.
It also supports the major Alt currencies if that's a thing.

About price, I think we'll see one more major dump before aug 1. Why? cuz i wanna buy some more cheap btc
In the past week, short interest has risen from 6k to 20k.
Most of those positions added in the last 24 hours so they are currently underwater.
Last time we had so many people shorting Bitcoin was back in April 2017.

Story time:
Back in 2014, my girlfriend was at work and very excited about Bitcoin. She casually mentioned to a female co-worker about Bitcoin, explained what it was, and told her to buy some and hold it for a long time as an investment. The price was around $650/btc USD at the time. My girlfriend said her co-worker friend just smiled back and looked at her with this condescending face:
Needless to say, her co-worker friend never bought any bitcoin.
Haha... nice story. Your girlfriend be like:
