pretty cool.

Yeah, about as cool as buying a Lamborghini with Bitcoin.  I bought a PC and i paid for with oil barrel......i just had to sell the barrel for USD first but thats a minor detail.  (The devil is definitely NOT in the details)

What are the 5 last things you paid for with BTC (without converting it to USD before the deal was done) and how long ago were these purchases made?

This is a good question, but could you clarify the bit about the conversion part?

do you mean that I personally had to convert to fiat? or that I used a bitpay like service and effectively I paid in bitcoin and the vendor received fiat?

By "without converting it to USD before the deal was done" i meant not using any third party converting service. Merchants like Overstock can do anything they want with your (now theirs) Bitcoins afterwards of course.

merchants like Overstock use a third party converting service

so Huh

Last time i read about them they said they d hold their customers Bitcoins. In case customers must click on a button of third party converter, then they are paying with USD and not BTC to Overstock.

This market bores me the fuck out lol

This is what everyone was saying right before the volatility struck last time and shaved like 25% off the prices.

This is also similar to slow summers and sell offs in September (stocks perform the worst in Septembers, average return -1.7%).

Looks like people are using their BTC for alt frenzies. Darkcoin has had higher volume on Mintpal alone.
What is Darkcoin? Does it offer more privacy than BTC, like not recording each transaction into blockchain? if so, I can see why this coin is prefered over BTC on the deep web.

Doesn't the current low volume conditions make this market a potential "easy target" for someone (or some entity) to manipulate it for profit?
Yes, it does make it easy target, Mark.     I too have been reading mostly this thread.    Miners have a huge reason to keep the price up so their mined coins pay off over consumed time, electricity and purchased HW.

12. Post 6785647 (copy this link) (by RandomPedestrianN9) (scraped on 2020-04-04_Sat_12.45h):

Guys, if you dont care that merchants are not holding onto their coins.....and not many new people with fiat are arriving in the system...do you think current price levels are sustainable? Merchants care about USDs received from your purchases and as third party services are selling your coins = eating what little fiat there is left, shouldnt the price drop in the long term?

Ssssh, Bitcoin fanatics will burn you for speaking the truth.  Most trades are automated in the financial world but i agree that BTC is now stripped of small Joes, its basically bots trading the log downtrend line.

While the real compelling use cases for using btc as payment (eg bitcoin only markets, you know which ones) could hypothetically gain traction and make the btc economy worth the actual price.

2. The decimals are not going to be a problem. The consensus so far seems to use bits = uBTC. Redditors already tip each others in hundreds of bits (which is in the same league as USD cents)

Suppose you want to buy an aircraft carrier which cost $ 4 billions (or a set of buildings, or a firm, or whatever around that price) with BTC
You'd need about 10,000,000 BTC which you'll have a lot of difficulty to get, and that's just one big transaction, nothing very unusual here. So I guess BTC's price will have to go up a lot if someone wants to be able to do real business with it.

WHy not use Litecoin instead? Or Dogecoin, they have enough coins, no need to inflate the price.

In the past, price has always went UP after any stable period.

I'm not sure how much longer the price will pretend to be stable, it may be weeks or months.

If the price drops from here and doesn't come back up, it would be a first in bitcoin history.

In 2013, the price may have went up after stagnation but that was because it was getting a lot of media attention and average Joes were buying in, this year, after many average Joes were robbed by exchange owners (not only MtGox) - 2 exchanges in my country stole the coins and money, this year my boy, its going to drop after stagnation.....is has been doing so since the beginning of 2014.

It has been going down for months but the price stability is probably a positive sign in this environnement

The demise of the USD and the probable fall of the Euro, Pound and Yen as well will make Bitcoin look very appealing

Either that or people are waiting for the crash to buy in lower and in the meantime only bots are now trading.

Indeed right now there is a very steady background traffic of ~1.8 BTC/min, started not long ago.  Check the 1m chart.

I recall seeing a similar steady background activity at MtGOX in December 2013, for days at a time.  And OKCoin may have had it, but much larger, since I started looking.

Is that some bizarre tradng strategy, Huobi getting desperate about the low volume, or what?

I think this artificial trading has been there since the beginning and only got more obvious now because of low volume. A stock i invested in a year ago had similar micro changes in price when everyone was waiting for news to come out. Its supposed to encourage traders activity, gotta admit it looks funny in situations like this.

This dumper is clever, he knows BTC is worthless and USD talks. Who in their right mind would sell 500 BTC batches for 450 when their value is at least 10 billion dollars, right?

You think bitcoin will crash then?

Nonsense, Bitcoin is the future, nothing can and nothing will replace its unique value.

Is anyone else noticing that we are like sitting right snug below the bear triangle line? we go up $2 and we are on top of the line... breakout imminent if we just go sideways like we have been doing... is it finally time?

Look, the thing is that although you make some useful points, and you are consistently polite in doing so, you are becoming increasingly strident. The fact that you very selectively choose what to argue - and a lot of people have made some very good points against some of your mistaken assumptions recently - means that it's not really worth engaging with you. Literally no point, because you appear to ignore anything that doesn't fit with what you already believe and move on.
Obviously I argue while I believe I am right.  If a reply is convincing, I let the poster have the last word.  Isn't that enough?

But there are MANY reasons why I am skeptical of bitcoin's success, and many of the replies that I get are not only unconvincing, thet are just countering facts with statements of faith:

Me: "Goevernments can effectively ban bitcoin, see China for example."
Them: "Bitcoin is like the internet, it will find a way around any obstacle."

Me: "Bitcoins may be scarce, but there are plenty of cyptocoins with equivalent or better protocols"
Them: "Cryptocoins will die and bitcoin will not."

Me: "Bitcoin is now more prone to theft and fraud than credit cards, see the numbers."
Them: "Bitcoin will be much safer when it matures."

Me: "Mining is already concentrated in a few companies, they may form a cartel and become like the bankers."
Them: "It is a free market so that will not happen."

Me: "The Satoshi 2009 blockchain already assigns XX% of all the money to a few thousand people."
Them: "Wealth distribution will improve with time."

And so on and on.  Obviously I am not convinced by such answers, but how can I argue with statements of faith?

Ban this guy, he is trolling, spreading FUD, flaming and spamming lies.

Sorry Jorge I can't help myself,  I just need to know why?

Because 90% of what has "bitcoin" in it IS scams or stupid ideas.  Starting with attempts to convince the unwary to buy bitcoins "because they will go to the moon" or "a hedge against inflation" etc..

For example, I  already mentioned a couple of days ago that student of mine who had been offered to join some GPU-based bitcoin mining enterprise.

I have to check who is on the board of the Brazilian Bitcoin Foundation.  I would almost bet that the creator of the BitcoinRain ponzi is there.

Are there a lot of scams related to Bitcoins... Yes
Are Bitcoins themselves a scam... obviously not

Before you disparage a paradigm shift you need to distinguish exactly what it is that you find the problem with. Of course this is a free market and people need to be informed and educated in order to avoid the downsides. But as an 'educator' Jorge I don't feel you're looking at this objectively and I also think you do your students a disservice by casting blanket dispersions on something that has the potential to offer them quite a bit of opportunity. You remind me of talking heads back in the 90s telling everyone to stay away from that dangerous internet because it would corrupt public morality.

Yeah but Bitcoin doesnt have porn in the blockchain.

What is 500,000 bits anyway? So have people stopped pushing mBTC and now they want an even smaller unit? Just stick with BTC as the unit.... it's getting ridiculous.... next is nanobit? satoshi? Maybe we should schedule a unit change every 2 years....

If it becomes necessary every two years, I will be quite happy.

If BTC moves like that in price, I'll be quite happy. But I'll be quite annoyed it's actually accompanied by a push to repeatedly change the unit. Just seems like it makes things perpetually confusing.

The confusion might be greater for someone telling you the price of a coffee in BTC.

After a few decimal places, well - it might make sense that you would want a more sensible unit to talk about, one day....

"How much is the coffee" must produce a sensible answer - so the 'units debate' is not too ridiculous.

Even if I often seem to be on the losing side of it!

I kind of feel like if people are communicating in different units, and displaying their wallet balances in different units, that inevitably many will accidentally send orders of magnitude too much or too little. Problematic with an irreversible payment method. Tongue

Oooooooooooooops.

Yaknow, whenever something great is built, there's always someone who comes along and wants to change it all about or otherwise vandalize it just so they can say "I was part of that". This is a solution looking for a problem.

If you want square "bits" go make yet another alt-coin.

+ infinity points

The real weak hands are those who fantasize about some imminent 10k bubble looking at retarded exp log chart trendlines and then dump when inevitably it becomes blatantly obvious that their inflated expectations were wrong.

So are traders who try to time bubbles to sell top and buy back lower considered average strength hands? And holders strong?   Trying to figure out where I fit. Wink

In the stupid hands, denying the truth and being blind fanboy.
