Hype and stupidity? Bitcoin just got plastered on the homepage of CNN, Forbes, and CNBC.

It was the #1 google search today.

Bad publicity? Sure. But for every 99 people who watched and laugh smugly at the demise of bitcoin, 1 of those people wondered if this was the perfect time to buy.

Which it is.

maybe off-topic, to people who think that they do take security seriously, please it is time to do some revision, I am reading around and I see a shocking amount of hacks and fraud going on for the last couple of days.

so you may consider:

1- check if you have all security features that your exchange offers already activated.
2- make sure that you use one of the best antivirus programs on the computer you use to browse around and make sure it is up to date.
3- don't leave funds on exchanges, if you daily trade and you have leave any funds there, then make sure to use e-mail confirmations and that your e-mail also has 2FA.
4- make sure that you use only one phone/device which is not rooted, and do not install garbage bitcoin apps or any other app games/garbage.
5- use paper wallets for your long term investment and save them in a safe place.
6- keep the for-daily use coins on an offline computer, use Armory, sign offline transaction and broadcast them on an online pc.
7- use different passwords on all sites, make them complicated and long (capital letters small letters, numbers and special characters)
8- don't keep any track of your passwords, keys or anything else on your computer, do it the old fashion way, write on a paper and save it somewhere safe.
9- encrypt about anything, I would recommend you to encrypt your entire dist as well, if you use linux this option is offered when installing the system, if you use windows then try PGP whole disk encryption, I use it and I recommend it.
10- use avg anti virus on your phone/device, activate the relocation option, there is also an option to wipe-out the device by sending a SMS to your phone if lost or stolen.
11- never trust anyone with your BTC, if you cant control the address then you don't own the BTC, any non reputable, non regulated online service can go offline, and you will lose all your funds (the new term is Goxed)
12- dont click on links without being sure where they direct, you can simply put the mouse cursor on it without clicking and check the address bar if it is a legit link, deactivate automatic redirection in your browser so you cant be tricked.
13- don't open e-mails from unknown sources, especially don't open spam e-mail, if you have to do so, then make sure to not open any executable attachment or any .pif extension, judge any site asking you to install "java plugin" or a "flash player" if YouTube works for you than you don't need any flash player or additional extensions, you are being a victim of a phishing attempt.
14- don't install any opensource software if you don't know what the code does, if can review the code your self then don't install without verifying the signature, especially don't install wallets of the daily created scam coins, some might be created just to steal your coins.

these are just some of the safety practices I can think about now, any user is welcome to add anything I might have forgotten to this list.

Thanks. I finally got off my butt and moved my coins to mycelium off the exchange because of this post.

Nope, this has no momentum left. how is it going to pass 465 without the sheer panic of yesterday? I dont think it can for many more hours.

I'm not getting a sense of sheer panic, more a sense of general fatigue and disillusionment with the misleading tales of "get rich quick."

The problem is that even if holders are afraid, logically they/we CANT sell right now.

The history of volatility on Bitcoin means that selling during panic is just too risky. Hell, in just the last month it went from $400 to $700 in a week, then from $600 to $450 in a week.

What reason is there to sell now? The bad news is out. If you were afraid of China news, you were selling a month ago. You can't sell once the China news is already priced in.

Cheer up guys Bitcoin still has a lot of gas left in the tank. No way these big time BTC startups don't at least punch back.

Yeah, and people still have guts to call this to be possible 2011 with such difference in fundamentals. I could cry reading that, really.

Are the "fundamentals" really that different or just at a different scale now with different "players" in the game?  I think there is something to the patterns.

If we get to $10,000+ by late Summer am I allowed to come back and say, "I told you so?"  Wink  You always seem fairly bullish though Seleme so I assume you think it is doable, no?

I'm not sure about 10 000 or any price in some specific time stamp but I'm fairly bullish about Bitcoin generally, and in same time I'm not afraid of it going to any price. As there is money to be made trading crypto at any price.

And yeah, fundamentals are different. Back in the summer of 2013. we had no idea if USA would ban bitcoin completely, for example, that was my (and most of other people) main fear.

And now we are worried about China banning it.  There were exchanges failing then.  There are exchanges failing now.  We are just at a different scale but things haven't changed that much. Wink

Not exactly. There is no comparison to the failing of Gox, which got national news coverage and undermined faith in exchanges as a whole. And its not that we are worried china is banning it, we're almost sure that China is banning it.

AKA: The Smart Bulls.

The idea that anyone (long) bullish on BTC is only bullish until a certain value confuses the hell out of me.

The higher the price goes, the more (long) bullish I feel.

So then you're never planning on selling Bitcoin unless it is lower than it is now? Interesting strategy...

You panic sold. You created your own problem. You took the price down and caused others to sell as well. You get what you deserve. Sorry, can't bring it any nicer.

I didn't panic sell. I chose a point at which to cut losses. $400 was the major support that everyone said would be a sign of a long-term down trend. So I set an alarm on my phone and told myself I would sell when that alarm went off, regardless of anything else, being tired of having had nothing but incredible losses over the last few months. I took the advice of the experienced traders on this forum. And it was right, for a day, until the PBOC suddenly decided "oops, just kidding that whole notice doesn't exist even though all these exchanges are limiting deposit options."

In other words, fuck off. Considering you're the asshole giving awful advice calling it "panic selling" when people sold at $600+ a month ago, I'm going to go ahead and pass on your advice.

Just to re iterate, your main problem was listening to people on the internet. You took the advice of traders on a forum who will always talk their book. The PBoC notice has never changed they have never said they were banning it and all they did was reiterate the banking rules and double confirm (for anyone still listening to people saying China is banning it) that a ban was not happening.

I respect your stop loss and its wise if this was an investment rather than wanting to have and use BTC but you cant blame people on a forum.

If your here to get rich then it burns to loose money but if your generally interested in BTC, buy back with an amount you can afford to loose and ride the waves and hodl. There are many around that sold out super low and never returned.

Believe me, the last thing I am doing is blaming anyone else. I am just trying to get a grasp on what the responsible choice is here. I have used BTC and have a small amount I used on day-to-day purchases.

Did I hope to make a profit when I bought more? Yes. Is that the "wrong reason?" I'm not sure, is it?

Either way, the money just became available in my account. So I'm going to take Rpietila's advice, because he knows better than I do through experience. And yes, I understand that its a risk and I could lose everything, and don't hold anyone else responsible for my decisions. I just was angry after holding through this entire downtrend, I sold right before the rally.

All my coins were through coinbase. I was going to sign up for an exchange in Jan., but several people told me the exchanges were shady as hell (and what a forecast that turned out to be). Since it was through coinbase, I sold on Thursday night, and my cash hasn't hit my bank acct yet.

you've taken a hit but you'll recover, just remember to only trade with a portion of your btc (or just hold) so you can be patient and not freak out at sudden movements.

Now walk away and come back in a year or two.
The speculating over the long term is always the best way with a very volatile currency/stock.

I'm partly telling myself here since while chasing the *bottom* I missed the actual bottom and have subsequently lost all the hard-fought gains I made in the last couple of months *sigh*
Also I bought in back in December/January.... well above $700 lol

Main thing I've learned: the pain of watching it rise while out of it was far, far, far worse than watching it sink while holding.

You have not learned your lesson though.  The biggest lesson is patience.  and buying back here and now is not the best place to have made a trade.

And how the hell I'm ever going to guess correctly at when the "best place is?"

The whole reason I sold at 400 was to try and come back in at a lower point. All that did was waste money and energy if I really believe in a long-term hold of btc.

Could it be insider trading?  Each spurt upwards is when a new group of traders gets that insider info?

Hard to see it as anything else, imo.

Artificial raising prices, all the same as MtGox.

This is it. I'm shorting. The peak follows a logarithmic trend with the other peaks

Trying to catch a peak seems just as dangerous as trying to catch a falling knife, especially when the price has risen 1% in the last minute

Last sell off before moon?

Let's hit 520

Doubt it. Bounce off ~575 is the most likely scenario.

In for a few more coins. $600 seems like a good price to get some more coins pre-moon

Pretty stoked for this. Sold 9 coins at 660 thinking I might be able to increase my BTC holdings at 570, and its working out nicely.

I remember when I read a lot of TA that said "if 400 is broken, its all over."

So I sold at 388, and sold on Coinbase, waiting for the money to get back into my bank.

Watching it rise the following week was one of the worst feelings I've ever had.

Yes, it sucks to watch it drop. It is 10x worse to watch it rise after you've sold.

Just my experience on this.

Investments don't pay off in 1-2 months. They pay off in 5-10 years.
