New Update on Gox:

Dear MtGox Customers,

In the event of recent news reports and the potential repercussions on MtGox's operations and the market, a decision was taken to close all transactions for the time being in order to protect the site and our users. We will be closely monitoring the situation and will react accordingly.

Best regards,
MtGox Team

how can we be goxed any further? market assumes the worst now, anything they say (e.g. being acquired) now would be seen as a positive.

"We should have an official announcement ready soon-ish. We are currently at a turning point for the business. I can't tell much more for now as this also involves other parties."

Okay, there has been one worst case left: Bitcoin itself is broken. That would be a turning point for the business.

But being in negotiations, nothing of substance can really be said without risking damage to the process.

Leaving Bitcoin Foundation, presenting a blank page to the customers, deleting all tweets... Do you think that this behavior will bring Karpeles into better position in such negotiations?

Rumors of acquisition and the upmove today...I'm very sceptical... Maybe it's the way Karpeles shows the community his finger with a bull trap one last time.

People at the bitcoin market are weird.
The situation with gox would be like HSBC would shut it's doors and freeze all of it's customers funds, without giving any explanation. And people will react to it "Good! Now the stock market is going up! Let's all buy!"

Yeah, but only speculators...

Mt. Gox to Hold News Conference
A covered Bitcoin sign is hung outside a Bitcoin cafe which was scheduled to open in March at the building housing the company operating the Mt. Gox Bitcoin exchange in Tokyo, Japan. Bloomberg News

TOKYO—Mt. Gox is about to hold a news conference at the Tokyo District Court.

Earlier Friday, the head of the embattled bitcoin exchange Mt. Gox said he couldn't comment on a statement by another bitcoin entrepreneur that he had said Mt. Gox was preparing a bankruptcy filing.

"We cannot comment for now. Please wait to see our next announce online," Mark Karpeles told The Wall Street Journal in an email on Friday afternoon in a rare response to media since Mt. Gox halted all transactions and took down content on its website on Tuesday.

Other people close to Mt. Gox said the company was expected to make an announcement later Friday. They said they didn't know the nature of the announcement.

Roger Ver, a Tokyo-based bitcoin entrepreneur who has known people at Mt. Gox for several years, said Mr. Karpeles told him in a text message on Tuesday that he was preparing a bankruptcy filing.

Mr. Ver, who has been a friend of the Mt. Gox executives for several years and said he received the text message on Tuesday, the day that Mt. Gox halted all transactions and took down content on its website.

Mr. Ver has vouched for Mt. Gox's trustworthiness in the past, but has in the past few day, along with many in the wider bitcoin community, sought to separate the issues at Mt. Gox from the bitcoin industry as a whole.

Mt. Gox has made two announcements on its otherwise empty website this week. On Tuesday, it said it had decided to close all transactions for the time being "to protect the site and our users." On Wednesday, Mr. Karpeles said on the site that he was still in Japan and "working very hard" to find a solution to "our recent issues."

At this point, there are two outstanding principal questions:

Who took the money?

When was the money taken?

As the Gox wall observers still refuse to answer those questions concruently the market stays as dump as fuck...

like it was when withdrawls were halted and buttcoin traded up to 980 dollars on Gox !

disclaimer : when asking to carry my bag you are welcome Cheesy

I'm afraid the market will decide "Show must go on!", because there are a lot of profits still not taken from the sheeples.

There's one difference between MtGOX and the many previous bitcoin scams like it (apart from sheer size).  This time it was not some unknown guy in China or Brazil, but a major player in the bitcoin community, one of the founding members of the Bitcoin Foundation.

Seen from here, it seems that all the "core developers" and other key figures in Bitcoinland were, to some degree, friends of Mark, and had much admiration for him and MtGOX.

Now I wonder if there is anyone in that community that can be trusted.
Are their statements, leaks, and deductions genuine --- or are they merely half-truths and lies intended to offset their previous support of MtGOX, perhaps even cover-up their own complicity in the "operation"?   Tongue

You forgot to mention the dump selling on gox (probably from insiders) since end of January 2014.

That's the point BTC won't work for me anymore. I dont trust it. I don't trust any exchanges anymore. But Bitcoin is based on trust only.

he knew it. maybe did it.

He done it 99.99%

There must be legal action against Mt. Gox!!!

If this guy and other insiders will not be prosecuted, it states clearly to the protagonists, that any other exchange or virtual currency business can do such scam again and again and again.

Bitcoin is based on not trusting.  Its primary value is as a cryptographic protocol providing cryptographic guarantees, so that you do not need to trust a counterparty.  If you give your bitcoins to someone else and they do not return them, it is not a failure of bitcoin.  It is a failure of your good sense.  Do not trust your good sense until you retrain it.  Bitcoin remains trustworthy.

Okay, I should have written: Bitcoin's real life value is based on trust. I would never had fiat invested into Bitcoin, if I had no trust, that there are a lot of people paying fiat to me for the BTC tomorrow .

I don't understand why so many downvotes. It's like there are a lot of people who just want gox to disappear. Everyone who lost money should just "move on". So what if you lost 100000 dollars ? So what if there's a plan to save all the money AND improve the bitcoin world in the process ?

Karpeles and the other insiders have to be prosecuted! I'm strictly against any solution providing those fraudsters an easy exit.

Academic interest in bitcoin only. Not owner, not trader, rather skeptical of its longterm success.

This is the problem in the predictions. If you are/were not invested into BTC, you cannot take the emotions of market into account.

Market is completely emotion driven especially in those times, so I don't buy any of your screens.

Finally, trading is easy again. I am having a lot of fun today! Already there are enough trading opportunities to make up for someone who has completely missed the bottom. I think next time there is a bear market I will just withdraw the fiat to bank and then wire it back in once the reversal is in, and not bother with attempting to trade during the bear market.

Whats so hard about trading at the bear market? Just put your bids low and relax, and possibly do some quicksells and buy-backs on the obvious bulltraps

Full Ack!

Bear market trading is much easier and more profitable for me.

You realise you made an absolute statement there?  You surely also now accept that statement was factually incorrect?

OK, so enlighten me: how many BTC does Bitstamp own, and how many does it owe its clients (i.e. what is the sum of the BTC balances of their clients' accounts)?  Ditto for BTC-e and Bitfinex.

Headline : "The Japanese government officially said Friday that it doesn’t consider bitcoin to be a currency and has no plans at present to regulate it as a financial product."

Thanks Solarstorm, it seems like its a news allowing to test the lower support indeed.

If it wasn't for the Gox stuff this would normally be bullish news. People in Bitcoin want to have their cake and eat it - no regulation or protection unless it happens to be convenient

From the link:

Any bitcoin transactions are taxable when they fulfill requisitions stated by laws on income tax, corporate tax and consumption tax

If you have to pay VAT on every single trade, that would be very bearish news. But I have no clue, what the statement exactly means.

Mr. Dorian S. Nakamoto

WTF???

"Signed" on the 1st April, 2013! (Dates aren't reliable - they use the PC's time, and that can easily be manipulated). I believe there are also screenshots from only a day or so ago showing no Dorian...

Thx. Proof here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=504778.0;all

It's gonna crash, litecoin is gonna follow in few hours

Nope. Lots of traders switching from BTC to LTC. Expect to da moon for LTC in the next weeks.
