Anyone know what's the deal is with Coinbase?  Their price is running about $25 over bitstamp right now, which is by far the furthest I've seen them spread.  Usually they're pegged right within a dollar or two of stamp as that's where they do all their orders from (at least, that was the common assumption).  Very odd that they've been sitting between 695-700 while stamp hovers around 670-675.

Anyone know what's going on there?

Perhaps they are charging more because they can?

Predictions for Thursday Feb/13 at 19:00--19:59 UTC (not earlier, not later):

Huobi:  3970 plus or minus 30 CNY (3940 -- 4000)
Bitstamp:  650 plus or minus 10 USD (640 -- 660)

I used the Chinese Slumber Method described in my previous posts, extrapolating linearly from the two Slumber Points of Feb/10 and feb/12. (The feb/11 point seems to be unreliable as discussed before.)

For the Bitstamp prediction, I assumed a currency conversion factor of 6.12 -- which was valid at Slumber Times up to feb/06, and appears to be valid again since feb/10.

That's just great Jorge, now we're going die of boredom for the next 24 hours.

We need a Schoolcoin for school ecosystems, where a students worth is no longer measured by grades, but through the number of coins they have.  Coins can be used to redeem grades as well as other items like extra pudding at lunch.

I can see it now... This will create a thriving school based economy where the smart students could trickle their coins down to the dumb kids for various goods and services.  Giving each member of the school society a valuable role.  The smart kids are encouraged to do good work and the dumb kids benefit by finding what they're valuable at as well.

Naturally, the bullies will eventually realize they can just beat up the smart kids and get them to give up their private keys, thereby giving the bullies access to all the smart kids coins.  That is, until the smart kids begin to pay off other big kids for protection from the bullies.  Meanwhile, there will be a couple super smart geeks who figure out how to game the system and steal the coins of everyone, but when people realize whats happened, those geeks will have to pay off the majority of bullies even more so that they become allies.

The result will be a few super rich geeks with a thriving class of rich mob like thug bullies who ensure the super rich geeks stay protected and in the shadows (so long as the thugs get their cut).  Meanwhile, the other 99% of students will continue about their days working hard and earning Schoolcoins based on the quality of work they do, none the wiser that the majority of their coins are being funneled to the super smart geeks who know how to game the system.

Eventually though, cracks will start to appear as most students begin to realize that they're only making enough coins to afford C level grades and some measly square lunchroom pizza when they are really a B level student who should be getting quality chicken tenders at lunch.  Slowly, they'll begin to figure out that something is up.  Walking down the halls, they can't help but notice that there are a select few students who no longer eat lunch in the lunch room.  They have a private room to themselves where they get all kinds of different takeout each day.  They also no longer attend class, instead spending all their time working on various projects in secret.  Yet they keep receiving a large amount of Schoolcoins for the classes they no longer attend.

As the pieces begin to fall into place, it dawns on the regular students that they've been gamed by the system and at that point, a revolution is inevitable.  Unfortunately, all this will play out over many many years.  All the while, there will be generations of students who were unable to afford good colleges because they couldn't to save up enough Schoolcoin to pay the entry fee, since cardboard pizza and a few luxuries like 30 minutes of recess a day ate up their entire savings.

An uncharacteristic flair of irony and, dare I say it, humility for this thread.  Cheers, 7K!

Doesn't it seem peculiar all the recent exchange difficulties, sudden rise of malleability attacks everywhere when problem was known about for some time, DDoS attacks, phishing scams-STAMP mentioned today, other hacks, fud, poorly founded newses, real but negative newses dripping out almost daily, heavy duty trolling, etc all from multiple angles happening all about at the same time?  Somehow coordinated?

Connections with MtGox/Silk Rd coins and FBI rumors of selling all those btc, heavy hands, and MtGox just so happens to be crippled right now when all this is happening? Maybe they were the easiest/best target.  It seems relatively easier to cause problems with tech on exchanges, much hardr to cause problems with btc protocol itself, otherwise we'd see that already.

Possible motivation to drop btc prices for planners to buy in cheap.  Smells like Wall Street SOP.  Not a conspiracy theory type, just a noob ( 2 months) here  trying to see the bigger picture.  Most of you have been here a long while , have you seen so many attacks coming from so many places all at once in BTC?  Of course all my speculation.  Worst-case is someone trying to destroy btc because its a threat to  Status Quo, but would think the aristocrats need to make more boatloads of money in btc before doing that.  I'm probably just crazy.

In case anyone is interested, I downloaded the PDF of the "Crisis Strategy Draft" and took a look inside.

http://www.scribd.com/doc/209050732/MtGox-Situation-Crisis-Strategy-Draft

The owner of the PDF is listed as Ryan Selkis, so I googled him. Turns out he runs a company that aims to "reduce volatility for consumers while helping hedge funds invest in bitcoin". Way to go with the volatility reduction!

They aren't short on money, I can tell you that much.  Maybe short on BTC that is "on deck" for instant buys...but they are solvent (for now at least)...

right, I'm sure they're solvent, its just they need to keep money on the exchange to buy btc for their customers.  A lot of buying tonight for them I'm sure.

it willl take a long time for fresh money to poor back in to the system (if it does at all)

if it corrects like 2011 that is good for Bitcoin fundamentalists, but it may not, depending what happens to the Gox's coins we could be in for a coin shortage, and the treat of impeding catastrophe.

Most bullish technical aspects I have observed:

3-period weekly RSI is at the most oversold level in bitstamp history.  >90% of closing a daily bar higher in the next two weeks.

Retracement of the bounce of low unable to break 38.2% mark.  Give me a third test and I'd lay 3:2 odds that the next break is a post-gox high.  (Actually we have third test on 15 minute bars.  I'll take another 1-hour test though.)

Daily MACD low and crossing over.  I'd say this indicates at least 3:2 odds that we are within 3 days of a higher daily close.

Also, on a 5-minute scale, we're seeing higher highs and higher lows, albeit in a very tight range.  No mixture estimate on this one as it is too weak to matter.

Of the three, I'd weight the Fib the most highly in a mixture model, followed by RSI, then MACD.

Anybody got some bearish indicators to mix in?

You forgot the inverse (cone)head and shoulders pattern.

WOW...  You seem to be onto something Walsoraj.....  that is really really funny to NOT hear from Satoshi in that particular thread for 5 years ... and then all of a sudden for some reason Satoshi Nakamoto, if that is really Satoshi, feels such a need to comment within that particular dormant thread and to say that he is NOT Dorian... ... I thought that we had NOT heard from Satoshi since about mid-2011 or so... which would then cause me to begin to believe that maybe Satoshi is Dorian.. b/c why would the real Satoshi care enough to reply in a dormant thread concerning whatever is going on with Dorian...   In this regard, the real Satoshi should NOT give a flying fuck about whatever is going on with Dorian or that Dorian is being confused for Satoshi.. unless Dorian is the real Satoshi...

Define explodes.   LTC at $25?  $40?  $100?  $1000? and when?  day, week, month, 6 months, 6 years?

Personally, I doubt LTC will grow much beyond BTC... maybe we will get to .1BTC... but otherwise somewhat parallel to BTC... and probably losing value over time to other alts...

If lots of idiots like me bought at the top of the last ATH, it probably won't go much higher than that.
I'm saying that because I will be selling as soon as I can make a profit and believe I won't be the only one to do so.
That's of course my (very) short term position. I'll be ready to buy back in the next dip.

I think ltc/btc = 0.35 0.035 is a reasonable short-term target, however "explosions" make me nervous...

You are correct, of course, Sir or Madam:

One must always consider the longer view:

(The same red lines are included for context).
I was amused many years ago when reading "Random Walk down Wall Street,"  a required read at Harvard Business School I understand.  Shortly thereafter, I read "Reminiscences of a Stock Market Operator," and was amused in an entirely different way.

Looking at the longer view chart, it would seem counter-intuitive to suddenly turn bearish this week.  2014 is the much hearlded year of Wall Street (VC) entering a very small unregulated market where anything goes.   A pause is in order, and attention should be given to subtle clues.  Grave attention should be paid to the "Random" forces that are creating such a picture.  Who profits most by a low price at this time and why?  Nearly every word you read is an attempt by someone else to take your money.

Kind Regards,
Nick

Bitcoin   $5 B
Apple   $475 B
Chipotle Mexican Grill   $17 B
Dollar Tree, Inc.  $11 B
IBM  $200 B
Intel  $130 B
Costco   $49 B
CVS Caremark  $89 B
Berkshire Hathaway $307 B
Pandora Media $5.6 B

Most people probably haven't even heard of the names for 99% of the companies with the same market cap of BTC. It is still in small-cap stock territory and it's market price behaves as such.  How much Capital does it take to move the price around?  $5 million has a huge effect.  How many individuals can move that much into and out of a market(s)?  How many trading firms around the world can?  How does $50 million sound?  This isn't even the beginning yet.  Fortunately, and I think there are a good number of people here who already know this, all of the information you will need will be right there in front of you, hidden in plain sight.  You just have to focus and know how to see it.

I've learned a few things about bitcoin from this thread and had a few laughs, so thank you for that.  I wish you all well, although I will still try to take your money if given a chance.  Wink

Fkn bullshit market.  I'm sure Stamp will be right back to $599.999999 soon.

In the wider view (since 6/16) we are just in a consolidation pattern with smaller and smaller price swings, and declining volume, even with tonight's sell off.  FWIW, I put a bet in that the bias is up.

Which is more pathetic:

1) People conducting their individual risk management/business and trading accordingly on the open market
2) People getting mad at 1) when they don't like what they are doing, fantasizing allegations and accusations

?

Well said.  Not to mention the amount of energy and time spent on this subforum  by people going number 2. Wink

Emotions are swinging faster and farther than the market is.  Someone please PM me when they find a market a that only goes up all the time.  Will pay a good commission.

Note to self:  Isn't it actually quite fun to participate in this market?  If not, find something better to do.

Cheers,
Nick

If I were going to place a bid on a blind auction to buy bitcoins, and the auction was going to be closed in a couple days, I would put a bid in at $541.00 or $551.00.  There seems to be good technical support at those areas and I would feel like there would be a good risk/reward ratio.  I'd feel like I'd be able to make some money on a trade (eventually) and/or it would be a good price for a long term hold as well.  If I didn't win I wouldn't be too disappointed.  If I did win, I'd feel pretty certain I'd be able to do well either trading out or holding.  Remember, I'd have to take out $200K out of money for the deposit that was otherwise working for me elsewhere, and the time-cost involved for the auction.

Where would you place your blind bid today for any amount of bitcoin?

Nick

It depends if you actually wanted to win the auction. If I wanted to win Id put my bid somewhere between $600 and $630.

Thank you for your honest reply.  There are currently about 3100 coins on the Ask to $605 at Bitstamp.  Did this influence your decision?  I know there are other factors... Asks getting pulled, exchange risk, etc.  Honestly just exploring what the winning bid(s) might be.

USD loans don't necessarily mean a long BTC position.
Correct. It also does not mean Bitcoin exclusively (some will be in Litecoin, but likely negligible). But they are usually so expensive to maintain that longer term they can pretty much be equated. And short term, we can assume that the vast majority is tied up in Bitcoin longs.

Could you use the extra buying power just to put up a fake wall?

Are you guys implying that people are taking out loans and not using them for BTC longs, but instead just holding them? Why? To remove demand?

Or perhaps an effort to control price prior to an auction?

You borrow USD to buy coins.  You borrow coins to buy USD (this is shorting BTC).

Or you can borrow all available USD and not buy coins, just to deny these funds to real longs.  Then you can borrow all available coins and short, pushing the market down.  This would show as the market dropping due to a lack of buying, which is what TERA has been pointing at for a while now.

To make things even more complex, anything you put in your trading wallet can be used to borrow against at BFX, weather is it USD, BTC, or LTC.  For example, you could have LTC in your trading wallet and borrow the USD value of that LTC to go long on BTC.

If you look at the Chart Blitz posted, it doesn't appear that the borrowed $ (on balance) has been used to purchase BTC otherwise the price would have moved up as margin increased.  Right?

That doesn't follow, does it? There could've been selling pressure absorbing the demand. In other words: maybe the market would've dropped without the longs being opened. In fact it makes sense people would open longs even when the market is falling.

That is a definitely possibility.  It's just hard to imagine typical speculators would keep doing that in a declining market and driving margin to all time highs.   We'll see I guess..

Amazing that a worldwide exchange market can just be completely stopped from all trading whatsoever by a few whales.

Is that what's happening here?

If so it's a real shame, because it's possible that the people who own almost all of the bitcoins want to own absolutely all of the bitcoins and that would sorta take all the fun away.
