If you read and understand this article, you will be enlightened:

http://finance.fortune.cnn.com/2014/01/21/bitcoin-platform/

Lots of nice predictions, we will see if they materialize.  (By the way, CNN blogs are not very selective on what theiy publish, it seems.  The author does not seem to be affiliated with CNN.  Is that a reader-contributed article?)

The title of that article is rather funny though.  Does the author realize that Napster was originally a pirate site that threatened to bypass the copyright industry's monopoly market, was crushed for that, then assimilated by that industry?

If we take that title literally, Bitcoin will be appropriated by the banks, and turned into a fancy brand for something entirely different from the dream of its inventors.

Napster and other pirate music sites had perhaps the merit of forcing the music industry to accept the internet as a delivery channel (instead of physical records) and reduce their prices from absurd to merely exaggerated.  (But  the merit for that goes to Apple, whoc ould not simply be crushed like Napster was.)

I do hope that cryptocoins will at least have the same effect on the cost and delay of international money transfers.  Beyond that -- well, I am still not convinced.

Actually, Napster shattered the music industry paradigm. What was eventually bought up was the insignificant remnant that remained long after the fatal blow was struck.

Assuming the gox fix works, (and exists of course) Gox BTC are going to be worth a lot more than GoxBux, especially being so cheap. We are going to get a massive spike in the Gox price, which will drag up all the other exchanges. I'd be anxious if I was short at the moment, this represents a significant risk if you stop including the bear trolls in your risk assment and see how likely it is to happen.

This exploit affects the appearance of transactions, not the function of transactions. It's not cool, but it doesn't break Bitcoin.

i get that, but the general public, those who are the potential market support, the unwashed masses etc. the danger is in the perception. and that is being shrugged off.

It still doesn't seem as though it will get ANYWHERE near $100 again, and in fact seems to have stopped plummeting now that we're heading back up on Bitstamp.

I think we're still just now absorbing the impact of this. People laughed off Gox's statement at first, maybe because they didn't want to believe it. We're probably going to see more exchanges suspend withdrawals one by one. If it's not resolved soon, we'll have a few more sell offs i'm afraid that will test historic lows. People will be rushing for the exits, it's a mixture of a legitimate bug and mass hysteria. This is shaping up to be the "worst case scenario" I always feared but hoped wouldn't happen.

This thread now resembles the cesspools that are the Baby-Pips or ForexFactory forums in the way disinformation is spread based of half-truths and delivered with so much emotional baggage, you'd think the authors are packing for a trip to Mars (or the Moon right?).

Especially those who reserved a couple million bitcoins for themselves at the beginning, and thus (like the "me" in my parable) have invested nothing and will walk out with a fortune.

Satoshi invested NOTHING? He only invested his/their lifetime to learning to code, learning about currency and cryptography. He invested his intelligence, reputation, time and money into creating software for the entire world to use freely. If he invested nothing into Bitcoin then you invested nothing in becoming a University Professor.

Check that your phone's time is in sync with your PC. There's a drift sometimes (and not just on Bitstamp). Try logging in 45 seconds after the number is issued, and not right away.

It's interesting to follow the price on bitcoinbuilder. The floor seems to be around 0.3 and it won't go below that pretty much no matter what happens (I suspect if Gox went sub-90 we might break it) but it does follow the actual gox/stamp ratio fairly well in parallel when it goes up.

I've made a few trips from low .3's to .4 today, even with the 2% fee it's not too bad and slightly more predictable than Gox itself.

I can't see my trade history anywhere, is it on the BTC builder website?

I think a lot of the good news over the past month that people say 'didn't affect the price'  went like energy into the coiled spring beneath this rally. And is now being released.

One thing about bitcoin is the enormous schism between users / investors / believers and the MSM. Users and investors have been definitely noticing this stream of adoption and development, and recognizing all the good news - the increasing mainstreaming of BTC is quite unmistakable. But the deflating bubble + Gox has not allowed translation into the marketplace.

In addition, the 'good news' this week is nothing short of remarkable. An end in sight to the Mt Gox debacle. Possible reduction of the total BTC in circulation by a significant percentage = scarcity. Reduced threat of Gox coins being suddenly dumped on the market. Support from Larry Summers.  Coinbase breaking records in new users. ATMs sprouting like mushrooms. Neo bank opening in Cyprus. SecondMarket in conversations with authorities & players about fast tracking new exchange in NYC. Extrordinary remarks yesterday from Benjamin Lawley about how the Gox insolvency demonstrates the need to move quickly ahead with clear legal guidelines.

In addition, the more one moves into the vertical rise of an exponential pattern, the gaps in the oscillations become more compressed.

So yea, rally surprising. But maybe not entirely irrational.

I am certain that it will go back down again after this rally, but even so you are missing out on 30% profit by continuing to wait till it goes back down to the $200-$300 range? It might go back down to that price range, but I assure you it will not stay at that price point for longer than a day.

I don't like to play these unstable rises that are made up of stupidity and hype. To me, it's the same as passing the roulette table and cursing at yourself "If I should have called red at the moment, then I could have won big". Sure it would have been great to win money, but I'm not planning to earn with playing like this.

except a large percentage is not stupidity and hype, but real world market influencing events and conditions.

All I am seeing is alot of price exhaustion, no buying enthusiasm. I think this, plus the failure to escape the long term bearish slide, some pretty clear whale intention signals, and most importantly - the scary thin orderbooks across the exchanges, with giant air pockets all the way down to double digits - make 580 feel like a breathing point, and not much more.

I remember prepping my low orders during the Gox 24 hours, the low end of the bid book was like a jungle of multi-hundred orders. Now it is an African savannah. Occasional trees.

Why do you guys call it "China FUD". It is a FACT that PBOC issued advisories in December saying that banks and third party payment processors should not deal with bitcoin exchanges. Chinese bitcoin exchanges have now been illegally and manipulately skirting by this for months. How long did you think it would go before some enforcement action was taken? Even if this particular news is fake, it is only a matter of time before it actually happens.

Here I was thinking that current prices were representative of a Bitcoin that had moved on from China and now we were pricing based on demand outside of China. But I guess I was wrong. We still have deluded people ACTUALLY thinking that China is still with us and that China is just going to last forever and bitcoin is perfectly ok in China, and that we should price Bitcoin based on these assumptions. "yay go china"   "omg ltc on china".  Ridiculous!

Hey, I just started trading on bitfinex and my limit order disappeared without filling. What gives? Has that ever happened to you?
Had to pay double fee to market order.

might be a glitch? happened to me twice this morning, but both times I did not check to see if the order showed on BFX window b4 clicking over to BTwisdom. And it never showed up there. Ijust assumed i did not hit the button hard enough : -)

Can anyone who has read the different announcements today speak to the issue of whether chinese will have problems getting cash off exchanges in the near future, i.e. a Gox type situation where coins are the  only way out?

Water under the bridge. You are a smart guy and have been right alot before. Given current conditions, including 1 day macd turning down, china falling apart, breach of major supports - i woulld be very intersted in hearing from both of you thoughts on the next 72 hours.

Huobi has shown it can sleepwalk upwards for hours. Plus those pumpers are out there somewhere. Dangerous place to short imo.

Slightly on topic. Very slightly.
I'm watching a Muse (the band) live concert on tv and during a song this banker comes on stage and throws away worthless dollar bills to the audience. Or whatever the message is.
Anyway, this specific clip is in b/w but the notes he throws away are brightly coloured.
I realize this is probably the most simple effect nowadays but someone explain to me how they do that with moving objects without having to add the colour frame by frame.

just a guess, but they might have green screened the same throwing motion with dollar bills, seperated out the dude, then had him do the same motion in the concert scene ...
