Lols , in my language his name makes perfect sense Smiley taur - bull , urs  - bear. Had the impression it's touro in Portuguese
"Ursus" and "taurus" are Latin; "Minotaur" is "Bull from Minos" in Latin, Anglicized.

Even though bull is "touro" in Portuguese, the Minotaur is "MinotAuro". Smiley

How did the latins spell  "bitcoin to the moon" ?
There were no latins

Bitcoin Investor -- A Conservationist's Perspective

Quote from: sporket on April 09, 2014, 12:32:43 PM
The American Passenger Pigeon, once a staple food of American Indians, is now extinct.
Consider the chilling parallels between this noble bird's tragic tale and the plight of the Bitcoin Investor.

"At a nesting site in Petoskey, Michigan in 1878, 50,000 birds Bitcoin investors were killed each day for nearly five months. The surviving adults attempted a second nesting at new sites, but were killed by professional hunters before they had a chance to raise any young."[1]
...
"Still another way
[of hunting Bitcoin investors] was to simply set a nesting tree on fire, cooking the doves investors or collecting them as they tried to escape."[1]
...
"Two farmers from the vicinity of Russelsville, distant more than a hundred miles, had driven upwards of three hundred hogs to be fattened on the pigeons Bitcoin investors which were to be slaughtered. Here and there, the people employed in plucking and salting what had already been procured, were seen sitting in the midst of large piles of these birds amateur financiers. The dung lay several inches deep, covering the whole extent of the roosting-place."[1]

...I am not writing a qur'an here. My words have a context, without which it's hard to understand and childish to criticize.

Perhaps you could remind me of the context for "rpietila Calling the Bottom" on August 15th?  Or your predictions that we'll see $300k USD coin by last Christmas?

Re. "not writing a qur'an":  But like arcane spiritual texts, your typings are totally open to interpretation, inaccessible to infidels, and not subject to laws of logic & math?

Perhaps he could or perhaps you could figure stuff out for yourself. Everything is open to interpretation.

I think you are in the wrong place. This is a place where we discuss things that *might* happen, whereas you clearly know exactly what *will* happen. So obviously you know to sell all your BTC right now if you have any, put your money in the bank, and never come back.

>Everything is open to interpretation
Lol no, that's just stupid.  $300,000 = $250 ain't open to interpretation.  It's wrong.  That much should be clear even to a learned pataphysician like yourself.

>This is a place where we discuss things that *might* happen
Wouldn't put using the royal "we" past most of the lulzy buffoons in this thread, but I'll guess is you're, once again, butting in & speaking for rpietila.

I assure you, there is no implicit "might" in the shit he writes.  Much pretense, pomposity & even copious lulz--sure. But "might"?  Never!
Just unabashed Bitcoin pimping, interrupted only by humble, self-abasing asides like "I am writing this from a castle that I bought with money earned by trading Bitcoin based on the very premise I have explained to you here."

Now don't that make you chuckle at least a teeny bit?  Especially when the "castle" in question is a slated-for-demolition derelict ex-mental hospital, located smack-dab in the middle of Boondockstan, Nowhere?

At a sausage fest? That's the least worries.

Rpietila's (unencripted, with wallets on it) laptop allegedly got stolen from a sauna, where he was presiding over just such a sausagefest.
That's what set off his descent into totally-not-insanity & consequent institutionalization.
He's, of course, totally all better ... now that the antipsychotics have worn off.

Yes, if I actually was mad, I would probably be hesitant to tell about it in the public forum. Then again, the exact same can be said for the bitcoin detractors. Some make good points (actually, there are not that many regular posters that fall into that category), a few make half way decent points but also get it wrong a lot of times (say, Jorge), and then there's a whole lot of trolls who don't even try to make sense or have a discussion ...

Discussion?
Why bother, when this thread roughly breaks down into three contingents: those who already agree with me, those who know I'm right but are too stubborn/overinvested to admit it, and finally those who, despite all the evidence to the contrary, continue insisting they're little teapots, short and stout?

There are those who, like Jorge, continue to hope that Bitcoin cultists are educable.  Keep in mind that he is an educator by trade--a footsoldier in a [likely doomed] assault on stupidity, IT IS HIS DUTY to continue teaching to the last breath.

What is it about Bitcoin that instantly corrupts everyone who touches it?  Worse than crack!

Force and Bridges, who worked together in the Baltimore investigation, had both independently ripped off Silk Road.

According to the government, it was Bridges who was responsible for the January theft, which he perpetrated by taking over Curtis Green's "Flush" account. It was that theft that first caused Ulbricht to turn to violence to defend his empire. And when he needed to hire a "hitman," another corrupt cop—Force—made himself available to do the deed.

The BTC market has been pretty boring these last few days. I just want to see some price changes lol

That's pretty much what happens when penny stocks are abandoned.  A few diehards, refusing to admit to themselves that the bag they've been stuck with is, indeed, the bag, continue holding it.  Now this wouldn't be as quite as silly if not for the continuous flood of new coins mined daily.
To see this curiosity in action [outside of deadcoin trading], check the performance of 100% confirmed dead "securities" on Havelock.

Bingo.
Now for the big question: Is it possible to put that sort of community *into* your money/coin?

Maybe, though the appeal of crypto to most users is the very thing which makes it so great for scamming--anonymity.  Anonymity is just not very conducive to community-building, almost by definition. Blend in a few sociopathic liber notion like "greed is good"?   You get ...pretty much what we have now.

I admit, a pretty touchy-feely argument, along the lines of "social norms, from table manners to religiosity to hierarchical social constructs, resulted from millennia of evolution, and contribute to community-building in weird, less-than-obvious ways."

Which is why most people are here and which is why Bitcoins will never become the mainstream as it won't get the exposure ever due to these people trolling about the prices all the time, trading it all the time and not doing anything for it to reveal it to more and more people for it to be more usable...

It is a currency, and should be used as a currency rather than just being "traded for profits"...

And therein lies the rub--no central authority to prevent people from using it however they wish.
Since Bitcoin lends itself so well to speculation, people will speculate.
Since its pseudonymity makes it a nearly ideal scamming instrument, that's what it will be used for.
Satoshi tried to make greed and selfishness of participants eliminate the need of a trusted third party.  You're asking us to disregard our basic tenets: "greed is good" & "Invisible Hand is the only regulator we need," and appealing to ...what, our civic duty?

I agree to few of your sayings, but not all...
I ain't saying or appealing to any of our duties, I am saying that if you want this to succeed, that too in a better way, you need to do something for it...
You can't blame Satoshi for participants' greed and selfishness as it's people's own choice, Satoshi made it to show the world something new, something innovative...

Satoshi's contraption is only interesting if it works regardless of how the participants use it, that should be self-evident.  Money for good, thoughtful, honest people doesn't require schemes of complexity that'd make Rube Goldberg blush.  There would be no need to to build ridiculous thumb-twiddling ASICs with the sole purpose of burning gigawatts of electricity.
A simple email app & a calculator would suffice for the honor system.  Or a small notebook with a sharp pencil.  Or decent memory and a handshake.  That good memory is not even strictly required--if you forget how much money you owe me, I'll remind you.
Satoshi, OTOH, set out to make money for IRL people.

Quote
If you want to change something, you need to be the first to initiate the process as you can't expect someone to come and help you or others to do that...
And if you said is true, i.e.; Bitcoins are trustless, then these innovations like Blockchain and other things associated to Bitcoins are worthless as if they are only being used for the purpose which you put into your prior posts...

Still, I have faith in it and I am a believer...

Blockchain is an interesting, though, granted, clumsy and astonishingly labor-intensive, solution to the Byzantine Generals Problem.  In a way, it borders with solving the Traveling Salesman problem by trying all the possible routes.  In other words, not useless, but not the pinnacle of elegance, either.

But Satoshi did something he may/may not have intended:  He created a microcosm of compressed time, where events taking endless millenia--progression from decentralised, single-cell soup to complex, highly centralized thinking organisms--is played out in a matter of years.  So that's something.

the killer app of bitcoin is the ability to speculate on the price of bitcoin ... that's the ultimate truth...

2) There can be fees depending on how you use BTC, but you can also use it for free.

Yeah, you can use cash for free too.  Try using BTC without tx fees, tho-see how that works.  Wait for the miners to stop using 10% yearly inflation to pay for their work, and watch tx fees skyrocket.

3) At this stage,  it is not a steady store of value, but, things change...

4) Bitcoin is not a a traditional investment, and  also the release of new coins is not endless, it is very specific and known values, known by all in advance. No surprises here.

10% yearly monetary base inflation, with nothing but some drug & CP bazaars for underlying economy, is pretty ridiculous.  No, no surprises there, I agree.

5) There are no guarantees in any form of investment...

Whelp, why not invest in my clonecoin?  Much better upside than BTC, lower price & I promise will become Milky Way's reserve currency.

I said "Ouch, that's gotta hurt!"

Penned by Assemblyman Matt Dababneh, chairman of the state’s Banking and Finance Committee, the proposal aims to regulate virtual currency businesses under the state's Money Transmission Act.

oh man has the u.s. actually finally wised up and realized they need to outright render all fraudulent digital currencies illegal to preserve the value of the dollar ?

errr...... no.

Hard to say.  There are those who claim Bitcoin was created by the NSA as the ultimate honeypot.  The reasoning goes something like this:

1.  Bitcoin attracts the criminal element <==prima facie, empirically substantiated, currently held axiomatic.
2.  Those attracted to Bitcoin are criminals <==somewhat of a logical leap, but again, shown to be true in 99% of the cases.  Remaining 1% are weirdos who like losing money, so who cares.
4.  Bitcoin is instrumental in fighting crime by impoverishing those who hold it. <==not life-affirming, handicapping the criminal contingent.
5.  What's more, criminals pay for their own demise (arrest->confiscate BTC->sell BTC (to criminals, who else)->rinse->repeat). <==PROFIT!

Bitcoin is best crime-fighting tool ever, Q.E.D. Undecided
