Is GHash.IO primarily independent miners pointing their hashpower this way, or is mostly internal to GHash (e.g., hardware at cex.io, etc)?
both

Hmm, I understand GHash does merged mining with alt coins and is thus more appealing to some miners.  But I wonder why more aren't moving to Elegius or another smaller pool giving the current situation and potential (temporary) loss of confidence should something "funny" happen.  Is this a "tragedy of the commons" or is it a case of "meh, whatever"?

it also has 0% commission and it is private

Guys, price is dropping. The rules of this thread specifically state that Bulls are not welcome during the "bear" I told you this was coming day. Please come back tomorrow when this nonsense is over.

one question puzzling me, let say during 2013 what was total time with btc rate on the way down, and how it compares to the total time it was going up.

Bad news and good news are floating around. It seems the market only focuses on the bad news, and ignore the good news. What the market should do, in my opinion, is to focus on the good news, and ignore the bad news.

The bad news aren't really bad, it is expected and unavoidable reactions from governments, they can only slow down bitcoin slightly.

It is oscillating (no trend) market, hardly any news bad or good, plays any significant role. Perhaps somebody want to buy as much bitcoins as possibly and interested to keep it oscillating.

Guys the joke on us, I've been watching Mtgox and bitstamp and simply some smart people are slowly buying small batches of 20-50 BTC each hour and it has been happening for the last couple of day.

It is actually the same bullshit Gox bot that was identified a couple weeks ago. At least on Gox. People call it the "Willy" bot and is likely run by MtGox since it had trading access while everyone else was shut out of Gox for an hour+ last week. Most of this current rise on Gox is the Willy bot. Buys around 15btc every 7-10 minutes.

No- Huobi lead this small rise. BTC-E has also been relatively strong this weekend. You can't just blame bots.

I didn't say Gox lead the rise over all the exchanges, I said Gox alone. The bot on Gox has been doing the majority of buying over the last couple hours. I didn't originally identify this bot nor am I the only one who sees it exists. For Gox yes one can blame the bot. It buys 15 every 7 or so minutes and there has been a lot of volume. It is rather easy to spot.

there is maybe more then 1000 bots on Gox, currently 1207 on btc-e.  When access via web interface is not available, bots still can trade connecting via API. So, it does not means that it is bot which run by Gox. Hard to believe Gox will do some shady things as this, it will be spotted rather quick and bad for reputation.

Ok my bearish prediction (i can't believe i'm doing this). Unless Gox will be fixed and the price goes up a lot i think we'll stay at 650 for a while. Some good news will be posted but the price won't react. Then halfway next week people slowly are gonna poop their pants again and by friday everybody is ready to panic sell again.
The slightest hint of bad news will take us to 570. Moderate bad news will take us even lower. Real bad news and we'll see 200 or less.

Also think about this. Withdrawels are disabled and we fall 200 dollars. Withdrawels are enabled and we go up 30 bucks. Once agains shows that good news hardly does anything to the price anymore.

There will be no choo choo anytime soon. The only thing on people's mind is sell sell sell.

I'm going to adjust this. We're going down way sooner. The pants pooping part is already starting. It won't take too long before someone starts dumping on Gox. We need some good news real soon or it's down again.

most "up" rallies were not related to good news about bitcoins, but bad news about fiat.

According to the reddit comments, this isn't legit.

Yea, but this kind of solution makes perfect sense considering Gox's history.

China may have realized that it cannot stifle bitcoin.. and china has a mixed set of motives including a desire to have some kind of investment vehicle separate from the dollar... .. so China is likely torn about bitcoin and about whether they like it or hate it... maybe they are frienemies with bitcoin?

From what Iknow, Chinese residents cannot pay for goods or services using bitcoin; banks and other financial institutions cannot deal with bitcoin; bitcoins cannot be sold by e-commerce sites; and e-payment services cannot be used to pay for bitcoin.   So what is left?

I believe there are other cointries which have taken similar measures; Russia and India, perhaps? (A thread was started in this forum to build a list the legal status of bitcoin in each coutry, but it never got beyond the first draft.)  Some countries (like the US)  have not banned crypto-coins explicitly, but their existing regulations alerady prevent some of those uses.

If crypto currencies will only be used for clandestine private commerce between peers, under risk of legal penalties who don't care about regulation, they will have failed succeeded in their goal.

re: "natural monopolies"

examples include public utilities such as water services and electricity

o rly? So  the power company doesn't have to compete with solar, wind, gas and oil heat, etc?
The water company doesn't have to compete with private wells, water trucks, desalinization plants, and the f@#!ing rain?

Competition includes potential competitors and the providers of equivalent products. In the free market, any dominant company would soon face competition if they attempted to extract excessive rent (profits over and above normal profits) due to their dominant position. OR they would face reduced consumption of their product or service that would negate their dominant market position advantage.

http://mises.org/journals/rae/pdf/rae9_2_3.pdf

A question for you kind sir:

What happens when a rich guy comes in and lowers his prices enough to squeeze out competitors until he's a monopolist again, at which point he may jack the prices up?

Competitors then go to wash dishes in Chinese restaurants.

best hardware is those which you can buy, sale or deploy by click of mouse. it is on cex.io called ghs.

* All active traders get the rumor on Thursday or Friday.  By Friday night all the pessimists among them have sold.

* Nothing changes on Staurday, so no trading.

* The Sunday morning newspapers carry the rumor.  The occasional and week-end traders finally get it, and the pessimists among them start to sell.

all active traders are bots, and bots do not read newspapers. Bots placing sale/buy orders when they got sale/buy signals.

Im too scared to sell... I am NOT confident that we are going lower.

no problem in oscillating market, if you missed today, wait till tomorrow and still almost certainly you will close it.

also on BTCe with no commission for trading you can start with very small amount like 0.1 btc and see how it ends in a week time. have a fun  Wink

Oh.. with smaller amounts... such as .1BTC, I seem to do fine, but then I find it to be a big waste of time b/c spend hours watching the market and waiting.. then when I get to larger amounts of BTC, i have had bad luck... .. maybe I will try this later, when the BTC price returns to $650 + levels...

or try to trade ghs/usd on cex.io it is bulish market for last 2 days. Plus if you holding ghs you are getting returns from mining.

I wonder why there was no volume and no price chang on Saturday, and so much of it today.  Perhaps:

* All active traders get the rumor on Thursday or Friday.  By Friday night all the pessimists among them have sold.

* Nothing changes on Staurday, so no trading.

* The Sunday morning newspapers carry the rumor.  The occasional and week-end traders finally get it, and the pessimists among them start to sell.

all active traders are bots, and bots do not read newspapers. Bots placing sale/buy orders when they got sale/buy signals.

And the bot owners can't do anything, because they are slaves of their master bots.

seems it is them who is dumping. on the days SM in minus some large dumps occurs.

Well, here is a "pessimistic but bullish" possibility, sort of a worst-case scenario:

what will happens is that China will trade in offshore Yuan. Western exchanges can run transactions via banks in Australia (BTCe already doing it), Germany and now London too.

China already has huge shadow finance now it got empowered by BTC.

Guys, you all are a part of the problem... You think that you're so smart, talking about bulls and bears, and a lot of rubbish.

You need to realize: Bitcoin is going to fall unless there will be more people interested in buying them. And trust me, a person who gets to bitcointalk.org to get some info, and decide whether to invest or no, and actually starts to read this thread as the most popular one, and dedicated to discussion about the price, etc. and starts to read a zoology treaty will consider all this a big joke.
Do you think if an investor would have some interest in the stock market, on a specific company, and when trying to get more information about his potential investment would start to read all this rubbish, will NEVER invest. Some computer geeks who think they are business men, or who never actually leave their rooms, are being "smart" here... in a business you need to be serious first of all, and bulls and bears have nothing to do with Bitcoins as an investment.

The other problem is that altcoins are falling down. They were the ticket for late investors to adopt Bitcoin. So, there is a very very strong relationship between those and BTC. I always told, the minute altcoins will die, BTC will too. Simply because nobody is going to pay hard cash at this prices for something where the "insiders" are talking about bears and bulls, instead of serious matters in a serious language.

cannot see how much your way of thinking is different from other smart guys. Reality is that bitcoins markets under full control of high frequency trading bots. Recently FBI start looking into high frequency trading bots in traditional markets. 800-900 bots at any time trading on BTCe. It is bots wars and it going to stay this way.

selling lower than bought. I never understood this concept. I call it losing money.

my aim is not accumulation of fiat but btc/ltc. even if I sale coins on lower price, then I purchased it on even lower price and more coins, because of down trend with each sale/buy cycle number of coins increasing. Because coins become cheaper. That way accumulating coins rather then holding same amount of coins. Do some maths before jumping into conclusion. Later during the spike coins sold and you left in fiat, that time you can see difference by selling for example 10 coins or 15 coins.

Is this a question for a financial opinion ? well, if you think it is good buy but if my opinion matters to you, then I can tell you that if LTC will behave to BTC moves then if the price goes up, you will have the same LTC, if the price goes down and you will still have the same LTC, LTC/BTC is not a so good trading option, it is only good if you think that LTC will outcome BTC trend and behave differently at a time  when Bitcoin is going up/down... it does happen but not very often.

yeah that is obvious. I mean price of LTC quite low at the moment. Recent low was 0.020 and high 0.032 in that regards current price 0.024 seems like good buy.

The only real problem I see with mining is centralization.

Centralization will be the beginning of the gentrification of Bitcoin.  Once it is centralized it can be controlled by banks and governments.

Agreed.  But its a solvable problem.

Please elaborate.

I addressed one solution above.  Other ameliorating factors can be introduced.  For example, mining could be moved to side-chains with small, fast block rewards.  This would not penalize current miners but would make it easier for amateurs to add distribution without throwing in to a big pool.  Anything that leads to more, smaller pools would be good.  It works because the side-chains would be merge-mined with the bitcoin 1.0 chain.

Are you of the opinion that difficulty will continue to increase?

I mining on ghash.io and trading GHS on cex.io same time, same account. I dont care about difficulty anymore, before it will increase I will increase my GHS holding faster.

Yes.  Firstly, I think mining will become very profitable again.  Secondly, cost per ghps will continue to plummet for at least 2 years.  Thirdly, the hardware is mostly going to keep running even if it is never profitable because there are too many people incentivized to keep the network secure (for themselves, not necessarily for me) for much of it to find a land-fill.

That is what I would do if I could monitor the situation closely and if I was using Stamp. Unfortunately I'm at work and can't monitor the situation closely... so I feel it is a bit risky to buy right now.

People talk a lot about new money coming into the system. These new money will buy at a high price and they help to push the price up for a day. But at the end of the day people take their profits, because nightly drops have been so frequent over the past months. Holding might be a good strategy if you bought at $100, but at this stage it is not a good strategy not for newcomers. Things are looking up though, but it will take some time before people get more confident. I wish China was more transparent. The events last night around 1 am GMT (I think) shows how fragile the situation is imo.

trading on stamp more easy compare to btce, I sold at 530 and will buy back at around 500 - 510. there is always some opportunities.

BTC-E wall bearish
BFX  wall bullish
Bitstamp wall - maybe mildly bearish

Overall these three combined walls look bearish.

Those who don't think manipulation occurs, here is a guide written by Wolong, the guy who originally pumped Dogecoin.

http://cryptofrenzy.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/god.pdf

Good read.

Before the read, I was wondering why huge ask walls appear at regular intervals after a huge dump. Why sell low when you can sell high?

After the read, I am aware that one possibility is the manipulators are at the Suppressing Prices stage. I don't know about this for sure but this offers a real and logical explanation.

After the Suppressing Prices stage, the following stages follow: (1) Test Pump, (2) Actual Pump, (3) Shakeouts, (4) Re-allocation and distribution, and (5) Exiting - The Dump.

Now, the capitalisation of DOGE is much smaller than BTC but that does not mean that BTC cannot be manipulated. What is needed is just a bigger purse, that is all. And this is certainly possible.

I mentioned that this is only a theory and I cannot know for sure. But there is a way to know for sure. If and only if the exchange operators are willing to provide insights as they know who every single buyer and seller are, the bitcoin community will be able to know the cause of the perceived current bear market.

or else

(1) Test Dump, (2) Actual Dump, (3) Shakeouts, (4) Re-allocation and distribution, and (5)Hodling

Well this thread turned shitty rather quickly.  Roll Eyes

Yeah, only 8934 pages...but it was bound to happen sooner or later.

that is why Adam changed thread title from MtGox walls tracker to just some "Walls"
