People act is if it's going to kill them if they have to hold an investment for two years. I let Vanguard convince me to hold on to GNMA securities for five years and only made 2.54%.

Explain to me how Coinbase is profitable while it is now valued at 12% of the total market cap of BTC?

Without the underlying asset increasing dramatically in value, how do the NYSE investors see ROI?

AFAIK, Coinbase does not invest in bitcoin either.  Their profit does not depend on the price of bitcoin, but on how much USD they process.

I would guess (just guess) that they are valued so much because they plan to become a competitor to PayPal (including dollar-to-dollar payments rather than just bitcoin-to-dollar like BitPay).
+1 They have profit in every transaction, they earn @100$ or @10k$

Bitcoins are issued by miners, who pay to keep the network secure. Thus making bitcoins valuable. There are no freebies.

Even miners who sell immediately are making a profit that comes entirely from people who buy bitcoins expecting to profit from them by that mechanism I described.

Miners who mined long ago and held, as well as the early adopters who bought thousands of coins for nearly nothing, are just like the issuers of private money who keep some of their issuance to spend when it has been accepted as currency by other people.

I've been around long enough to recognise the patterns.

There is NO real pattern, here.

BTC price movements are reflective of a variety of factors, including sentiment and up and down pressures.  This moment is NOT really a product of any specific pattern because we have NOT been to this moment in history previously.

The pattern is the magic number $266.

We might be stuck here for a while if nothing pushes it up quickly.

Date that U.S. debt ceiling freezes in at $20T, U.S. govt runs out of budget money by mid-summer unless debt ceiling is raised or DRASTIC govt budget cuts happen (like hundreds of $B slashed).

Or a default (yeah right). Or a govt shutdown (yeah right).

80% of people here are PERMABULLS and do just 1 thing, they post "HODL", "sorry for your loss, get cheap coins" or "up, up, bulls!". What is the purpose of such posts?

Permabulls proved to be right. On the contrary, people saying that bitcoin is broken and should be sold out proved to wrong. Simple, isn't it?
No permabulls werent right. They say HODL all the time. That makes them lose much money, because if they start looking at charts and analyze them they will see good moments for selling and buying coins for cheaper. Going permabull with 100% HODL ratio is just stupid imo. And people recommending that to others are also stupid for me - they have nothing worthy to say about chart, that's why they post "HODL" - only way to add their 2 cents to the speculation.

just to support my idea:

they don´t earn bitcoin, but they don't lose money, only the opportunity to earn MORE

13.th/s
1300w

time to generate 1 BTC with 13.5th/s 175 days
daily power cost at 0.06 cent rate, 1.87 US/day
175 day x 1.87USD =

only 327.25USD power cost to generate one BTC!!!!

Cost of 327USD would be fine at rates like 700-1000USD but hashrate is atleast 3 times too small to support current 2200USD price.

Hashrate has no time to correct this, price will.

But Hashrate isnt lineal, the best way is buy high number and sell before lost the advantage

The Fed raised rates today. So there's that.

No more free ride for hot money?

It could be a combination of factors. Bitfinex is lower than stamp and seems to be leading the dip. Someone's dumping coins on finex.

Wouldn't be surprised to see a lot of hot money dumping btc to run and start accumulating that IOTA crap, whatever the hell that is.  They'll accumulate at 0.50c for a while, then start pumping it.

Altlandia: what a complete farce of a shitshow market that is.

I don't know how accurate this story is, but if China's Sichuan Province really is banning Bitcoin mining maybe that's another factor in the dip. It's a new twist, China "bans" Bitcoin mining instead of China "bans" Bitcoin.

https://news.bitcoin.com/bitcoin-mines-in-chinese-province-sichuan-allegedly-forced-to-shut-down/

Reports have emerged detailing the alleged forceful cessation of large-scale bitcoin mines in China’s southwest, with insiders quoting a lack of state-sanctioned regulatory policy regarding cryptocurrency mining as the official reasoning cited for such.

In the end, it's all about money. The alts are not evil in and of themselves. If you don't understand something, it's good to stay away from it. Have no regrets. But if you can see an opportunity without directly harming anyone else, why not? Even bitcoin will have its losers (the ones buying high; but if they just use it to do value transfers, like buying something, they don't really lose) but that's the way it goes, all of this is voluntary.

The only reason I own ETH is I'm spreading my stuff across a bunch of alts. In the end, they all go back to bitcoin. (And the other alts have their uses too.) I got some precious metals too, because ... because!

Weird there's still so much confidence in alts. There was a sea change in their behaviour when they ate the world this year. They have nothing to show for it really. Has Dash made the world a better place?

Maybe there'll be a sea change back when Bitcoin whups their pert arses back into line.
Its not confidence in alts, its confidence in whales my friend. When btc take a break, they can earn money with alts, x10 in btc is harder than x40 in alts.

So since the start of 2017, 380+ new shitcoins have been added to the list (as tracked by coinmarketcap.com). The list went from ~900 to ~1281 cryptocurrencies. And 6581 "markets", whatever the hell that means.

So Bitcoin's % dominance as tracked there is not being 'eroded' by other alts supposedly taking market share away. It's being eroded % wise because of all the shitcoins merely being added to the ever growing list.

In other words, just by virtue of adding a new shitcoin to the list, Bitcoin's % market share of the total is shown to go down. Because the individual fiat market caps of each new shitcoin added are fakery. Complete bullshit.

A more accurate way to track % and total market share would be to restrict the list to say the top 500 by market share, and anything below that gets taken completely off the list.
Low market cap and low daily volume should be ignored in btc % dominance

Quote
Why Bitcoin Will Fail
...

4. No profits for central banks — If bitcoin genuinely starts to replace cash as we know it central banks will lose a key source of income called seigniorage, which is the profit they get from printing money. No government will want to subsidise central banks which have lost a revenue source.

What an argument! How come nobody thought of this before... Bitcoin doomed, never moon!

What is Bitcoin Atom?

Increased my holdings of Bitcoin Cash today. There was a long need for a blockchain good for payments, that makes certain tradeoffs to achieve that, and I think from a UX point of view, Bitcoin Cash has much better chances of winning the upcoming payments war than LN.
7:03 PM - 5 Mar 2018

@CobraBitcoin
Bitcoin Cash is a parasite coin that aims to undermine and suck value out of Bitcoin. It’s not like other altcoins. We should be prepared for a BCH pump during fork which could have unpredictable effects on miner incentives and harm the true Bitcoin block chain.

Ive been part of this thread for years and know there are some knowledgeable people here. The only reason i was even touching the cash was to convert it to BTC.

Again, help will not be unrewarded.

EDIT: As i was typing the TX ID the balance is back up. Phew.

What are the reasons that would happen with BTC or BCH in electrum? Ive never seen the full total leave before coming back later

Glad the problem was resolved. There is bitcoin stealing malware you really should consider using a Trezor with Electrum to protect your private keys.
