...the middle class is pretty much disappearing.
Edit: sorry, for international folks this post is very US-centric...
It's an interesting topic, the shrinking middle class. It was easier once upon a time to just say, "hey auto workers, sorry but develop some other skill." But more and more industries are falling into this pit of either "industry sent overseas" or "industry has been automated."
Today, what industry can an autoworker retrain for? We don't make much of anything here anymore. And we keep giving away newer industries like green tech. And now we're taking our sweet time on Bitcoin tech while other nations more quickly allow for growth in this industry.
I believe America will fall on very hard times for quite a long time because we simply have been making too much money for too long. We're accustomed to it; many feel entitled to it. Unions have made us believe we're worth more than the market wants to pay. Hubris has made us believe we are worth more than the world wants to pay. Couple this with disappearing/automated industries and it spells trouble.
An example of this is a web development company I worked for some time ago. They decided if they couldn't charge at least $50,000 for a web site then they didn't want the contract. Needless to say, web sites came down in price since then and this company went out of business for lack of being "hungry."
So I think America will have some hard times coming, perhaps rightfully so. Great place to live but everyone needs to relearn lessons now and again. The pendulum swings. Fortunately I am over the hill and could kick the bucket before it gets too bad. I'm not a "stockpile beans and guns" kind of person so I wouldn't last long anyway.
Since what happen in US affects (most "western") countrys i wouldnt label it "us-centric".
Sadly US politics is used as a template for copycat in a lot of nations.

So...it peaked in April last year. How many of the people who bought gobs of coins back then are holding until they reach that year mark and will be sure to sell just in time to pay taxes on their gains?
at least in germany, it´s the other way around.
If you hold BTC for a year or less, you have to pay 26% taxes on your profit.
If you hold BTC longer than a year you only pay 3%.
Isnt the german tax-law very bitcoin-friendly?

rusian stock market: -5 %
russian rubel: all time low
as long as the Crimea-thing (ukrain) is going on the ruble and the Russian stock market will get hit after hit.
And if the EU and US decide to play it hard there will be an impact that will last for years.
Russia "cant" give in since the Crimea is important to their fleet and the geostrategical options for a much bigger region.
The EU "cant" give in, since it would be a new precedent.
So I expect this thing to go on for a while.
What this means for BTC is your call.

Every fucking bullet wasted at Crimea will be a fucking rally for Bitcoin. Some people die, some people get rich. Choose your seats.
I doubt, and very much hope, that bullets will fly in anger in Ukraine (though some warning shots were allegedly fired this morning).
If anyone is hoping for violence in Ukraine in order to profit in the markets, then shame on them.word.

First of all, you seem to have some difficulties understanding basic principles and that is we grow up as a product of culture and communities, and some communities are stronger than others. If for some reason, instead of watching bugs bunny, you grew up watching fox news, then you may need to be educated into social norms... b/c they taught you badly.
Some jokes are just not funny.
That is NOT a joke.. its an assertion that relying on bad information sources is going to be problematic for socializing people to accept varying viewpoints.

Ya, there's kind of a which came first, the chicken or the egg. To get more adoption we need the price to go up, but for the price to go up we need more adoption.
The Chicken.
(always the chicken)
The mutation happened during the "reception" of the animal (the first "chicken"), a animal that happened to lay eggs.
not-chicken-DNS
+ not chicken-DNS
+ randomized mutation
-> chicken ---> first egg.
Please do not use "chicken and egg", because it can easily be answered.

if we see 481, there is an uptrend.
before that: no.
there is an invisible wall at 480.
(at the moment it is visible, but thats not the one i m talking about)
someone is running a script to place there coins.
(what i m guessing, just from looking at it:)
- the goal is, to have around 8 coins at 480.
- if the invisible wall gets below 2 coins, it gets refilled
- if someone else is placing there and the amound gets over 20 coins get removed.
thats why we are waiting for 481.
// its close to 20.15 - Tatort is about to start. cu later ;-)
//edit: btc-e is the one im talking about.

I dont see how ebay adding a category to sell virtual currency is particularly bullish. Its all overpriced and the main issue is still paypal. Ebay doesn't really care there just thinking about the fees
absolutely overpriced - yes.
but the difference is, that instead of explaining for 3 hours to the generation of my parents how to register on a exchange, etc, i can point them to ebay.
overpriced but done with one email.

Disagree, local bitcoins, bitylicious etc are quick and easy and use a proper escrow system without the perils of ebay and paypal. You dont need verification or any such like. Its made it no easier at all...
sorry, we will have to agree to disagree.
its a question of age, and a question of where in the world you are.
its much easier to point someone with a certain age and background to a ebay-auction than to something else.
the people i m talking about are using ebay (including paypal) on a daily basis.
no twitter, no facebook, no amazon.
and when their email-provider uses startTLS they need us because their "computer is broken".
but they know how to handle ebay.
sad but true. (and somehow sweet)

It will not change just by the current people passing the bag on. The new cohort of 3.2x more people is what will take it higher.
The current players' desire to have cheaper coins is no more significant then.
For the new cohort to come in, there must be a motivation factor. And what might that be?
I suspect, though I don't know for sure (no doubt others will comment on this):
Lots of new people (aka the "Fresh Fiat" we keep hearing about)
are going into bitcoin. We know that the number of new accounts on Coinbase, Blockchain etc is rising significantly, and that must be bringing some new money in.
The problem is that speculative money is leaving bitcoin at the same time. Bitcoin was vastly overpriced and has corrected/is correcting (depending on how bearish you are).
Although it's a gross simplification, I wonder whether the newcomers are more 'normal' buyers, Joe Publics who have heard about Bitcoin and decided to buy a small amount, try it out etc, before perhaps investing more in the future. Whereas the speculative money is at least an order of magnitude greater per person, because these people were trying to make a lot of money at it.
It may be that a proportion of current newcomers become larger investors later on. I'd be interested to know how many day traders here started small before going in heavy enough to make/lost decent money, and how long that took.
TL;DR - growth in user base and fiat is already there, it's just slower and steadier than the speculators running for the door.
-> Relax. Once the speculators have bailed properly ("capitulation") we'll see the underlying growth that was there all along.
Discuss.
the userbase is growing.
But the new ones have seen enough burned children to not risk their savings. They go in with small amounts.

Stephen Fry: "They said that about a lot of idiots as well."
We don't need shakeouts. We need millions and billions of weak hands to go mainstream. We need growth in all directions. Just face it, this is a bad day.
