I'm beginning to doubt this whole thing. Bitcoin isn't anonymous and is actually more traceable than cash, it is actually run by a secretive central core of developers instead of being decentralised, has massive security issues instead of being rock solid technology.
Actually everything I thought when I first bought in turns out to be 'not quite right'.
Anyone else feeling a little bit cheated? I want to keep the faith but wondering if there are better things I could be putting my money into (tesla for example).

I've been wracking my brain trying to make sense of everything. What gets me is that Mark isn't an idiot. If I assume that the Crisis Strategy Draft is truthy, a scenario like this is more plausible than what we've been fed:
1. Gox was robbed of a massive amount of coins (800k+) at some prior point in time, possibly June 2011, and has been operating a fractional reserve since.
2. Gox determined that it was better to continue operating the exchange, probably both for the sake of Bitcoin, and for their customers who would eventually be made whole from fees earned.
3. Gox knew of transaction malleability and had been keeping that scapegoat in their back pocket to use in the event of a bank run. Or, they didn't know but the losses from TM were actually recent and minor. Or, they didn't know but the losses from TM occurred over a long period of time and they never noticed because they never reconciled the books, because they knew they wouldn't match anyway because they were already fractional.
4. Fiat withdrawal problems led to an increased uptick of BTC withdrawals, outpacing BTC deposits and draining reserves to 0. This may have been compounded by an actual problem with transaction malleability that accelerated the process.
5. Gox spent its fiat reserves and customers' fiat reserves to buy up BTC in order to keep the ship afloat until they could launch their rebranded Gox.com and Bitpocket wallet, which they'd hoped would provide more runway in the form of additional BTC deposits.
6. Gox doesn't make it happen in time and is forced to shut down, negative on fiat by millions and having lost all BTC.

Ok so the last hour i did some reading on random news sites and forums etc.
I've seen some hate against Bitcoin in the past but the stuff i read today! It looks like everybody who doesn't actually own any coins hates it! And not just hate it but is absolutely totally digusted by it! Like Bitcoin just killed their dog or something. I don't think i've seen such almost global hate and disgust towards something on the internet ever before.
People want to see it burn! They want to see Bitcoin and Bitcoin users burn in hell!
Oh and like most here already realized, many of those people think Gox = Bitcoin and Bitcoin just broke down. Bitcoin is bankrupt. And they LOVE it! They act like it's the best thing that ever happened on the internet.
The fact that 1 coin is worth 660 dollars doesn't mean anything it seems. Bitcoin is dead and WE ALL lost our money and totally deserved it.

It is human nature, they hate it because they are not part of it and when it went to $1200 they all were wishing that they were part of it. Now that the media has portraid BTC as crashing and burning all of those that were envious now think they have reason to give themselves a pat on the back in the false knowledge that they did not miss out on anything and that no one is now better off than them.

Kraken is top a noch exchange, i would say it's the better out there, they only thing they are missing is volume. They where not affected by the malleability issue also.

I'm never one to buy into the old cliche's of "Weak hands selling their coins for cheap" etc. But today, I believe that is exactly what is happening.
Summarised, the news is a rehash of the information that's been readily available this week about certain banks closing down accounts that were connected with Chinese exchanges. This is not new information, most of it is available to read on here, Reddit and in some cases on the actual exchange websites.

You are using a self defeating strategy that is impossible to win with.
1. If the downtrend continues, it will never reach your break even point while the downtrend is in force and you will hold on to a losing position indefinitely.
2. If your break even point is reached, that will mean that the downtrend has broken and it will be an uptrend, meaning it will be a terrible time to sell.
The only good moves are:
a. Commit to your position as a long term holding.
b. Sell now or at some point along the downtrend ceiling, taking a small loss. Then buy back later if/when the trend is confirmed to be reversed.
Thanks for the pick me up, I know what you are saying makes sense however my break even point ($575) seems so far away and just getting further everyday, in retrospect was a really stupid place to buy at but what is done is done.

I believe that I agree quite a bit with what Tera says in her response to you; however, it really sounds as if you over invested in BTC at the time that you invested or you do NOT have the stomach for investing in any potentially volatile assets. Your state of mind, that comes through your writing, seems to indicate a potential for panic.... .. and what are you going to do if the price never goes back to $575?
Yet, if you pull out at $575 or $585 (in order to break even b/c of various administrative costs), then you will likely NOT have learned or become stronger from the situation - although maybe your lesson would have been that you learned about yourself and that you are NOT suited for certain kinds of investments?
I think if the market was not manipulated so much it would be easier to hold and stomach and rely on fundamentals for a recovery, however it seems that there are people that are hell bent on keeping the price down no matter what the cost.

If you were a whale with a large holding and were able to manipulate the market and were also looking at getting some of these FBI/SR coins, would it not be in your best interests to try and drive the market price down before the auction so that you could acquire the coins at auction at the lowest possible price ?

IMO we are a couple of months away from the bottom, we will still trade side ways but the big picture (1w MACD confirms that) is telling me that we are just not there and it will take some time.
