It makes me sad and pissed off that so many smart people here (me included!) get run over by trading.
I'm interested in putting together some quant tools, some portfolio management and position sizing tools, etc, etc, and working with other people here, so that we can have some education to move us away from gambling towards real wealth creation (a la a hedge fund type system)-- probably in a something like a club, at first. I have to program quite a bit of architecture first, so it's a ways off. The tools would allow us to essentially customize our approaches and handle multiple API's on multiple coins and exchanges. You could say I'm just past the 'napkin drawing' stage.

Would anyone be interested in that sort of thing?

I'd be interested in hearing more. A new thread perhaps, even though this one is a full time occupation!

Edit. So absolutely no gambling/playing ofcourse.
"Much as a bank like Goldman Sachs runs software to track price fluctuations as it juggles billions of dollars, Coinbase uses its hedging software to track all of the bitcoins it manages, deciding when to buy and sell bitcoins and adjust its exchange rate in an effort to minimize risk.
Goldman, where Coinbase’s Ehrsam previously worked, uses its software in an effort to make highly profitable trades, and Coinbase merely uses its system to protect its own position. But the inner-workings of the software are similar. “It’s algorithmic trading,” says Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong. “It hedges that exchange rate risk in the background, every day.”

Post 6280626 (copy this link) (by Bagatell) (scraped on 2020-04-04_Sat_12.39h):
Well, for a long term investor, it is really better to not check the charts and the forum for a half year, just like I did last year. Because this price movements are really silly

Day traders are dedicated, I give them that much. I track major bubble movements and overall sentiments, but some stuff I read on here is from 24 hour chart watchers who seem to make decisions and start drawing lines with every $5 fluctuation in price. I could never do that. I just hope they are successful enough to make it worth their while, let alone not lose their shirt. Seems like a sad way to spend a majority of one's time, especially with nice weather on the horizon (here in Canada anyways, I am hoping).
Successful day traders provide a vital function. They are the liquidity providers, the decentral bankers of Bitcoin. They reduce volatility by profiting from it. They accomplish this without even intending to, by looking after their own interest.
Key word there is successful though. Like I said if it is enough to make it worth your while, all the best of course. I fear there are less of you than what is actually admitted to as is always the case with "gambling", even educated gambling.
Edit. Back on topic- fluctuation! Resume speculating.
I've just been reading up on spread betting cos of
Ristos thread.
"According to an article in The Times dated 10 April 2009 approximately 30,000 spread bet accounts were opened last year, and that the largest study of gambling in the UK on behalf of the Gambling Commission found that serious problems developed in almost 15% of spread betters compared to 1% of other gambling.[8] In addition a report from Cass Business School found that only 1 in 5 gamblers ends up a winner.[9] As noted in the report, this corresponds to the same ratio of successful gamblers in regular trading.[10] Evidence from spread betting firms themselves actually put this closer to being 1 in 10 traders as being profitable, with a high number of clients suffering from the volatility that is supposed to be one of the benefits of spread betting."

"TA can't possibly give you a greater than 50% edge" sounds awfully similar to "it is impossible to make a living by playing poker it is all just luck" to me.
Speaking as someone who doesn't day trade, doesn't know much about TA but makes a living from poker.
People tend to overrate themselves on pretty much everything that they're not amazing at (and ironically may sometimes doubt themselves if they are actually good), so obviously if
they can't do it, it can't be possible. That's usually why losing players/traders say it's not possible, and winning players/traders question every single move that cost them money.

Slippery Slope's Million Dollar Logistic Model
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=366214.0I am rather sceptical about this. Not because it's a bad model overall, but because I suspect the amount of fiat coming in does not correlate well to adoption. Namely, over-represented speculators must have vastly over-pumped the market, so it's hard to tell where we 'should' be at this point.
I'd be interested in seeing a better model, if there is one.

You are about to learn one of the biggest secrets in the history of the world…it’s a secret that has huge effects for everyone who lives on this planet. Most people can feel deep down that something isn’t quite right with the world economy, but few know what it is. Gone are the days where a family can survive on one paycheck…every day it seems that things are more and more out of control, yet only one in a million understand why. You are about to discover the system that is ultimately responsible for most of the inequality in our world today. The powers that be DO NOT want you to know about this, as this system is what has kept them at the top of the financial food-chain for the last 100 years

Didn't you think the KYC was fishy enough? These are the signs of an exchange in trouble. It has happened before, and will likely happen again. You have all been through it before, but can you act on it? Time will tell. My coins have left stamp for now.
I'll try to answer here: we used to include Bitstamp orderbook into our own orderbook for liquidity purpose. In other words, we were arbitraging between our own platform and Bitstamp. However as we continue to grow we decided to slowly (and I insist on "slowly"

withdraw this arbitraging program to let people do the arbitraging themselves. This is why you started to see a difference between the price on our platform and Bitstamp, as arbitraging for third parties is interesting only after a certain threshold (around 1% like now is not a very good opportunities).

its insider trading, for example stamp selling their own coins because they know something bad with their exchange will happen soon.

http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=603481TL;DR
Among a total of 92 modern studies, 58 studies found positive results regarding technical trading strategies, while 24 studies obtained negative results. Ten studies indicated mixed results. Despite the positive evidence on the profitability of technical trading strategies, it appears that most empirical studies are subject to various problems in their testing procedures, e.g., data snooping, ex post selection of trading rules or search technologies, and difficulties in estimation of risk and transaction costs. Future research must address these deficiencies in testing in order to provide conclusive evidence on the profitability of technical trading strategies.

The chances of them dumping it all immediately are the same as Ghash using their occasional 51% to attack us.
Why would someone heavily invested in bitcoin make a concerted effort to destroy it?
Who said anything about destroying bitcoin? It would just be a trade, and once the trade is complete they wouldn't be invested anymore. However, I don't see anyone doing this unless they can buy at least 30% below market rates.
In my opinion they sure WILL be able to buy it atleast 10-20% under these market rates, wich means anybody that would sell it would still get almost instant profit of 10-20% it just trully depends on the buyer and we can only hope.
That's only a theoretical profit. You have to account for all the risks involved in bitcoin and in the purchase, the risk of market movement inbetween your purchase and when you will actually be able to trade, and the amount that you are going to drive down the market when you are selling. That is why I add an extra margin to make it 30% instead of 10-20%.
And then there's the IRS. I believe there's a bigger hit if they sell sooner rather than later.

Yes, exactly! Bitcoin doesn't even aim to create wealth. It aims to store and transfer wealth, but because of it's overly simplistic financial properties, it fails to succeed in it's goals. Without a mechanism to keep stable unit value, bitcoin is a gimmick of an currency, that is more of an innovative gambling platform, then a serious financial tool.

This raises an important question: Will Europe—that is, the EU member states and their people—listen to this report from “Europe”—the EU bureaucracy? Or will they continue to work in a decentralized fashion on getting the benefits of Bitcoin while controlling the risks?

What do you think crypto is intended to do? and by whom?
Cryptocurrencies are meant to allow payments that governments (and banks, which can be conflated with them) cannot see, block, divert, or undo.
That is not explicit in Satoshi's paper, but seems to have been a basic assumption by most of the crypto fans, especially the most ardent ones. (Reducing credit card fees is not something that would get people that excited about, is it?).
Most cryptocoins seem to be designed and supported with that goal in mind. Some bitcoiners are even adopting other coins because they do not see bitcoin as sufficiently robust in that regard. Few coins, if any (Ripple perhaps? I don't know about it) are designed to allow the same level of control that governments now have on bank transfers.
it looks like some connections to the central banks get it:

Keep accumulating.
This old chestnut again?
I'll say the same as I did 6 months ago or a month ago.
We'll probably reach our old ATH by mid summer, and hit anywhere from $7000 to $12,000 before crashing down to $2000-$2500, possibly before year's end.
We should be above $10,000 for good by this time next year.
Unless something comes along to break Bitcoin before then.
LOLOLOLOLOLOL
Where'd you dig that up from? Spend hours dredging through my post history? Get a life, noob.
Hahahahaha
I don't usually make predictions and you can see why.
Obviously thoughts of an ATH by mid-summer were a little premature, despite being the majority opinion here at the time.
Did you notice I used the words "probably" and "possibly"? Just in case English isn't your first language, the words mean that I wasn't saying we
would reach the suggested prices, but rather that I was
speculating that we
may have been on the way to reaching them.
While most of us may have been a little ahead of ourselves at that time, don't completely discount the possibility of reaching 5 digits some time next year,
possibly even by next May.
I'll give you the benefit of doubt and assume you're just a bumbling noob and not another ridiculous troll.
LOLOLOL

Come on guys, he only said "probably", so he's totally justified in being thousands of dollars off in his prediction

all connections are purely speculative. I find hilarious how bitcoiners are trying so hard to explain to a common greek guy (no, there is no such thing on bitcointalk) how bitcoin will save them.
because the issue here is not about the economic freedom (how is bitcoin supposed to provide it anyway?), but about freedom to say no to financial blackmailing or any other sort of oppression.

Just press 1d in the wisdom charts. It's about 14 months of bitcoin prices.
PS: right back at $270. I got a feeling that we're going to mirror the price drop of the past year and a half into a rise unto $1160 in the next 7 months.

Technique #3 - 'TOPIC DILUTION'
Topic dilution is not only effective in forum sliding it is also very useful in keeping the forum readers on unrelated and non-productive issues. This is a critical and useful technique to cause a 'RESOURCE BURN.' By implementing continual and non-related postings that distract and disrupt (trolling ) the forum readers they are more effectively stopped from anything of any real productivity. If the intensity of gradual dilution is intense enough, the readers will effectively stop researching and simply slip into a 'gossip mode.' In this state they can be more easily misdirected away from facts towards uninformed conjecture and opinion. The less informed they are the more effective and easy it becomes to control the entire group in the direction that you would desire the group to go in. It must be stressed that a proper assessment of the psychological capabilities and levels of education is first determined of the group to determine at what level to 'drive in the wedge.' By being too far off topic too quickly it may trigger censorship by a forum moderator.

There will only be a fork once 75% have moved to XT. Up to that point there is but one chain. Once the fork occurs, there will be a very rapid migration of the remainder to the consensus chain. There will be no extended period of duplicate chains.
How do you know how long this will take and what the consequences will be in the meantime? Define extended period? As far as I understand it, this is going to be messy as hell and even if the old chain is sold into oblivion in 72 hours, the PR damage will be permanent and who knows who is going to get scammed or which transactions will get completely fucked in the meantime.
The main reason for a short life of two paralell coins, is that liquidity the the all importan statistics. Two coins almost exactly the same is totally unstable. It has to lean to one side or the other, then the one with smaller popularity will take the liquidity hit and land hard.
"As to what will happen if/ when there is a hardfork:
Currently MultiBit Classic and HD both will follow the chain with the most work done in it.
Thus in a hardfork all the existing MultiBit code will follow the 'winner'. This is how the normal one or two block forks (that occur reasonably frequently) get resolved so it should just be the same but on a larger scale.
Both MultiBit Classic and HD connects to Bitcoin Core and XT happily and they should work correctly with larger blocks. The bloom filtered blocks Core/ XT send back to MultiBit are the same - MultiBit is agnostic about connecting to Core or XT."
