If this recent stability is due *to offline coins coming in, how long can that sustain the stability?
Edit = *
I don't think the stability has anything to do with new coins. Just a changing of the guard probably. Night shift is leaving and the morning shift is coming in.

Not just last night but the last 3 days. The majority felt there was a large dip coming and then additional news from China came in and the dip wasn't that big. ...Maybe I'm looking at this wrong.
Maybe we'll see an uptick as New York wakes up.

Honestly just hold everything you can, who needs to gamble? 5,000% yearly returns should be good enough.
It's 0% return if you don't cash out.
That's the beauty of bitcoin. It's a self stabilizing system until more than 10% decide to cash out.
Such diversity of viewpoints is stimulating. Mine is different from both of yours':
- Holding means 0% gain in BTC.
- Selling means converting BTC into fiat, which is suicidal.
The only remaining alternative:
- Buy more
is my choice.
Or mine...

That reason would be that MT Gox is a black hole that does not pay its customers out (depending where you live, anyway).
If you live in Japan, wouldn't you be rich?

I live in Japan and just got "trusted" status with Gox. It has been a very slow process (started 2 months ago). So the first day I have it I'm like 'weeeeeeee, let's start arbing...' Only to find out when I log in that my daily withdrawal limit has not changed. Still stuck at $1,000 a day. So anyways, I tried to withdraw $1,000 into my Japanese USD account to test it; however, the withdrawal has been mysteriously cancelled twice now with no explanation. Still waiting for answers. /sadface

Keep me posted on this. I thought the MTGOX black hole was just for us yanks. How does that place still operate? Been waiting on my wire xfer since Nov 11. got an email a week ago from tech support telling me they don't even have an ETA for it yet. I've also got a $15,000 deposit over at BTC-e that hasn't gone through yet after a month... Starting to give up hope that arbitrage is even possible.

Only deposits and withdrawals go trough his bank account.
All trading (USD/BTC) is virtual until it is actually withdrawn, in fact this opens the possibility of fractional reserve banking (the Sum of everybody's BTC exchange account could be higher than the total amount the exchange actually has).
Right but assuming they are reporting true volume there would still be an unbelievable amount of fiat channelled through this one account. In addition, the no fee policy leaves the door wide open for manipulation by bots.

Is there anything new in that 'news'? Isn't it the same situation as announced in December just clarified?
I didn't see a flash crash, I saw a correction.
I suppose we'll all know in 24hrs.
People see this as a possible lead up to a crackdown. Just as last time in the space of a few days there were multiple announcements which crashed the market. The deadline for withdrawing fiat from the Chinese markets is looming and it seems like more actions might be taken.

So the FBI will sell them to anyone who approaches them with an offer? Nonsense.
Public auction. That's the way these things are typically handled. However, considering the nature of the confiscated 'assets,' it may be handled as many suggest here, in a prearranged public sale.

Widening gap mean what , we go up or down

The gap means that having 1.00 USD in a MtGox account is as good as having ~0.85 USD in a Bitstamp or other exchange's account. The widening means that the "Gox dollar" is losing value.
Is there a way to trade on the difference between the two. Thanks from the "new guy"
Yes if you reside in Japan or have Japan Bank account
I reside in Japan, have a Japanese bank account (in ¥ and USD), have gone through all the bullshit to get 'trusted' status for large withdrawals and I still can't arb. I thought getting trusted automatically gave you the withdrawal increase bump but apparently you have to request it. I requested it over 10 days ago and still no increase. On top of that, the withdrawals I've tried to make in USD to my Japanese account have all been cancelled and support hasn't gotten back to me with an explanation why. THUS, the artificially high prices... impossible to arg Gox I imagine.

On top of that, the withdrawals I've tried to make in USD to my Japanese account
Why don't you trade in JPY and withdraw JPY?
Because then I would have to pay the conversion fee to USD when I wire the money to another exchange to buy cheaper coins. Yes, it would only add about 1 - 2% but still. But that's actually what I'm considering now. See how it works.

In Opera:
Right click anywhere on the page -> Refresh Every -> Custom....
I use the Easy Auto Refresh plugin on Chrome. Unfortunately this is only useful if the address of the page is static. On this forum the address changes for each new page. Useful for the Speculation topic list but not so for long threads like this. Does Opera overcome this?
You have to use this URL:

I believe its been reported to be somewhere between three days and over half a year.
You're more likely to see Bigfoot or the Loch Ness Monster then an international transfer from gox.
Care to elaborate more?
There hasn't been a confirmed international transfer to the US since June 2013. EU transfers are once a month and also has transfer problems. JPY is rather quickly but also heard of problems.
Yeah, I was excited because I just got my withdrawal limit bumped to $100,000 USD/day. Now I hear that ¥JPY withdrawals are also slowed way down. Can't win...

Because the quotes are irreparably messed up I'll write up a long form explanation:
Some background: MtGox runs custom wallet software.
This is a reasonable and common practice for a service of its size and nature.
Getting a wallet implementing right isn't easy as there is very little room for error, much like the rest of the Bitcoin system.
Some have criticized their use of custom software here but it is a reasonable and common practice for a service of its size and nature. The reference client's wallet is basically suitable for small scale single party use. I would not recommend something like MtGox use the reference node wallet, at least not without a healthy layer of abstraction on top of it— relieving it of duties harder than key management and chain monitoring— or otherwise improving it greatly.
(For that matter, MtGox's wallet software has caused them fewer concerning problems than some other companies. (E.g. some have completely re-implemented the Bitcoin protocol, incorrectly, and exposed it to the outside world and suffered numerous local blockchain rejecting glitches). Though its certainly taken Gox a fair amount of time to sort things out.)
I first heard people reporting stuck transactions back in ~September. I looked into it and determined that Mtgox was spending immature coins. Freshly generated Bitcoins (from mining) can not be spend until they are at least 100 blocks deep in the blockchain. This prevents the funds from vanishing forever if the chain reorgs. I pinged magicaltux and after a couple tries got ahold of him. I think they also wasted some time on dead ends trying to resolve this before the actual nature of the problem was brought to their attention, e.g. raising their transaction fees with a mistaken belief that their fees weren't high enough.
Mtgox wasn't tracking if the coins were freshly generated or what their height was in their software. Including this data would apparently be a non-trivial change, and for high risk finance software even a trivial change takes a lot of work. I suggested a workaround (basically, just try to spend the oldest coins), and as far as I know they implemented it and it was effective.
They continued to have problems with stuck transactions after, and further analysis revealed that they were producing transactions with excessively padded signatures. A minor tangent is required here:
There is a design flaw in the Bitcoin protocol where its possible for a third party to take a valid transaction of yours and mutate it in a way which leaves it valid and functionally identical but with a different transaction ID. This greatly complicates writing correct wallet software, and it can be used abusively to invalidate long chains of unconfirmed transactions that depend on the non-mutant transaction (since transactions refer to each other by txid).
This issue arises from several sources, one of them being OpenSSL's willingness to accept and make sense of signatures with invalid encodings. A normal ECDSA signature encodes two large integers, the encoding isn't constant length— if there are leading zeros you are supposed to drop them.
It's easy to write software that assumes the signature will be a constant length and then leave extra leading zeros in them.
In order to eventually remove this malleability flaw we've been gradually tightening the rules that govern what transactions nodes in the network will consider valid when they relay them or mine them. In Bitcoin 0.8— after months of work chasing down software authors to get them to fix their bugs transactions with these invalid encodings were no longer relayed.
This caused some problems for a few things.. For example bc.i's iphone app— BC.i itself had been fixed long before but they couldn't update the Iphone app without fear of triggering another review by Apple. Eventually this was just worked around on the server side by mutating the transactions produced by the iphone wallets. (And is moot now, I guess!).
MtGox also had problems with occasionally producing invalid signatures. This would normally be a simple fix. E.g. here is an example where I fixed this type of issue in some python wallet code I've never used (but saw a lot of people were copying):
https://github.com/jgarzik/python-bitcoinlib/commit/4c64603ab60b0fa23c51090b3112be2f163aeeacBut as I said before, in high value systems like Mtgox, even simple fixes aren't simple and it took them quite some time to deploy a fix. However, I believe that it is actually fixed now.
My current understanding and inference is that the remaining issues are because while MtGox was producing transactions of the bad form that the network won't relay anymore— some people decided to help out by 'fixing' these transactions like BC.i did for iphone users— making the signatures normal and broadcasting them. Of course, the new transactions— while functionally identical— have different TXIDs.
The difference here is that the MtGox wallet software appears to have not handled this case gracefully at all, and apparently simply wouldn't notice transactions that it "didn't make" spending its own coins.
As a result the Mtgox wallet believed some coins were available for spending which really had already been spent and it began double spending those inputs. This may have interacted particularly poorly with the earlier workaround I mentioned— trying to always use the oldest available coins— if they did implement that workaround.
Worse, some of this may have resulted in users getting paid multiple times and could have been intentionally triggered with that end in mind if someone helpfully fixed some transactions and then noticed they got paid twice. (I think this is unlikely to have caused large losses, before people run off worrying about that, both because of the reuse of the oldest inputs and because of the hot wallet/cold wallet split).
At this point they likely have an accounting mess to clean up— figuring out who did and didn't get paid now with none of the txids matching. Cleaning that up will be somewhat tricky E.g. say there were three payments of MtGox coins to 1Apple in the block chain... and three users that attempted to pay 1Apple, and MtGox's records thinks that only one went through.. etc. So software will have to be written that matches up transactions with their mutants in order to figure out what went where.
I am not personally concerned— at least not by any of the details here. MtGox's slow speed at resolving these sorts of issues and poor communications are not terribly inspiring. They seem to be horribly short staffed— but competent and trustworthy people in this space may be hard to find: The regulatory morass of that business is sure to make many steer clear.
The claims that the delays indicate insolvency strike me as just hysteria: the technical background doesn't support this conclusion, and there may be a bit of opportunism at play from people who want to manipulate the market too. Don't get me wrong: I have not seen their books: Gox may well have financial problems— though with their income its hard for me to see how— but if any problems like that exist they're not being indicated here.
Of course, none of this suggests anyone should be happy with the service MtGox has been providing, but our anger should at least be well informed.

lol it is actually simple: don't sell or buy unless you are confident. buy after lots of selling. sell after lots of buying.
+1 couldn't be easier
I was confident Gox wouldn't go much below $500... then DDoS, SR2, coins frozen on other exchanges... The FUD is difficult to anticipate.

Dear Mt. Gox Customers,
In order to implement our solution to the “transaction malleability” issue being
faced by bitcoin exchanges and businesses, we are going to have a 6-hour
downtime on all bitcoin deposits and internal bitcoin transfers in addition to the
current pause on bitcoin withdrawals. Trading will otherwise still be open as
usual.
Maintenance Schedule (approximate):
6pm ~ 12am JST (February 15
th
)
The above downtime period is approximate: it may be shortened or lengthened
as required. Once the implementation is complete customers will again be able
to deposit bitcoin, but we will be doing extensive testing before bitcoin
withdrawals are reactivated. We will publish an update on the situation on
Monday .
BlockChain.info have implemented changes to address the malleability issue.
Our solution should work in the short term, while a longer-term solution is being
discussed with the Bitcoin Core Dev team and the Bitcoin Foundation. We are
also discussing this with other exchanges and businesses.
Thank you for your support during the maintenance, and we will update you on
the progress shortly.
Best regards,
MtGox Team
Down we go.
Up we go.

I might be seeing things but it seems to me that there are "phantom orders" that show up in the books but that don't get counted when a dump eats them.

[ speculators ] provide liquidity and absorb excess risk that average investors are not willing to take. They exist in every market. I don't see it as a negative.
I do not intend the term as negative. But the use of bitcoins for speculation or store of value is a side effect that is not strictly necessary for its goal (cheap safe etc. payment via internet) and may be a an obstacle to it.
I have yet to see a convincing model (with numbers) of the bitcoin economy in the bright future; much less how we can get from here to there without being steamrolled along the way by banks, governments, and other competitors like Apple and PayPal. (I read somewhere that PayPal is already blocking any payment related to bitcoin.)
The fast increase in value, for example, seems to have attracted a lot of undesriable players (greedy speculators, shady investors, incompetent businessmen, scammers...) which are already harming the project's image.
The academic mind tends to approach every problem from a point of skepticism.
This is partly due to formal training and partly due to the politics of maintaining the image of an 'academic.'
Vision and foresight to see the future coming require a completely different disposition and set of skills.
Let the academics discuss why Bitcoin is going to fail, and then watch the tide of opinion slowly turn as it becomes the reality of our shared future. History is filled with such examples.

Personally I welcome Jorge's presence here, he is a benign character and takes a different and thoughtful view.
He has tried to look at trends from different angles and has spent a lot of time watching for behaviors that can be of use to us all - whether we are sceptics, or believers.
OK,. in my opinion, he isn't always right and he does see the problems we have adding up to a prognosis which is (on balance, from his POV) not likely to succeed.
However, he is not a troll, his posts are thoughtful and I always read his stuff.
So, I am sorry chaps - better ten Jorges than one Fonzie anyday.
Bom dia, Jorge - keep it up, but expect many (including me) to disagree with you.
I think it was Voltaire who is supposed to have said: "I do not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it."
Yes, I agree with you. However, trolls like Fonzie can be easily ignored because he is a nobody and more importantly a self-professed troll.. in short, nobody takes him seriously.
The problem I see with Jorge is that he is an educated and accomplished person which lends force to his opinions. However, it seems he has not taken the time to properly inform himself about the subject which he is pontificating on. Which makes him much more of a danger than people like Fonzie. I welcome Jorge but I ask that he moderate his negative views until he has a better understanding and until he has some way to substantiate the basis for his negative claims.
But I must admit, I do like Jorge and I hope that he stays with us in the forums.

under which circumstance would you conclude that you have been wrong?
I think I already answered that earlier today or yesterday...
Can you describe what would qualify as: a) a "success" of Bitcoin
I will be happy, and count it as a success, if bitcoin becomes a viable and attractive alternative to credit cards for legal international payments via internet. By "attractve" I mean one that many people will chose to use for its merits (convenience, price, safety, etc.), not for political motives or because they have invested in Bitcoins and want to encourage merchants.
Right now it is very far from that landmark, wouldn't you agree? Already I know that I will not be able to pay a hotel bill in China, for example.
b) Bitcoin being a good investment.
Buying a lottery ticket is always a bad investment, because one can compute the expected payoff, and it is negative.
If one buys a ticket and wins the jackpot,
still was a bad investment.
A good investment is one that, according to the best knowledge and judgement available at the time, gives a positive expectation of return. But there is no way to measure the probability of an event, either before or after the fact. Therefore, there is no way to determine empirically that something is a good investment before the fact, and no way to tell whether if it was a good investment after the fact.
Only in very few cases cases --- such as lotteries and other games --- there are proabilities that everyone would agree to, and therefore one can "prove" that something is a bad or good investment. Most of the time, probablities are subjective and personal, and so is the notion of "good investment" or "bad investment".
If someone invests in Bitcoin and gets filthy rich, good for him; but can you tell whether he was wise, or just lucky but stupid?
Last year the Brazilian oil company OGX filed for bankruptcy. Its stock price had multiplied by 10x in a couple of years (from 2 BRL to 24 BRL, if I recall correctly), which is fantastic in that market. Then it crashed in a few days, after it became known that its two deep-sea oil wells were nowhere as productive as it was hoped. Its shares are still traded today as a penny stock, 0,15 BRL in november, 0.30 BRL now.
OGX had several billion dollars of real money invested into it by many people. Were those people bad investors? I would not say so, they apparently did their homework and got positive expected value at the time.
Some of the original investors must have sold at the peak and made 1000% profit, some didn't and had 100% loss. Were the former better investors than the latter?
Or, to be more dramatic -- someone plays Russian Roulette ten times for a 10$ bet, and wins. Would you call that person a good investor?
(That reminds me of a great little movie called /Number 13/ -- not to be confused with /Number 23/. But I saw the French BW original, cannot vouch for the remake.)
Jorge,
What is 'investing'? You seem to be focussing too much on the financial gain aspect of investing. Please understand that a lot of us here invest in Bitcoin because we see it as an important disruptive technology that will change the traditional power-balance and bring invocation on par with the creation of the internet.
In my lifetime I have seen few opportunities to be a part of such a fundamental and innovative movement, that has such great potential to do good for so many, while, at the same time offering the kind of returns that most of us here have already secured and will (most likely) continue to enjoy for the coming years.

Negativity is fine.
Like when people say "Gox is a &%$# rat hole and needs to die."
It's fine because it is objectively verifiable and based on deep engagement and understanding (sarcasm - but sadly true).
It's important to have dissension otherwise we are just in a big echo chamber which puts us at risk of confirmation bias.
The important thing is that there is understanding and verifiability to back negative findings, not just blunt skepticism.
I welcome your expertise Jorge and hope you are active in the forums. I just would appreciate some more background to contexualize your skepticism.

Sounds like the plan at Gox is working.
I believe it is probably likely that Gox will not open withdrawals tomorrow. And, if they do come back with a reply that is vague (likely) it will cause even more dumping driving the price lower or at least keeping it in the 200s. So if I could get money there by Tuesday morning there may still be a shot at cheap coins.
On the flip side, if withdrawal opens on Monday then (best scenario) I've tied up my money for 3-4 weeks trying to repatriate it to my account, or, (worst scenario) Gox is insolvent and I've thrown good money after bad. Decisions... decisions...

For very obvious reasons, gox price is *justifiedly* decoupled from stamp price.
If however the situation on gox continues, I don't think stamp will entirely stay unaffected. Not for practical reasons so much as for psychological reasons: gox price is still quoted in the world, and at some point, the nervousness will translate into selling pressure on stamp as well. Not enough to go sub 500 maybe, but enough to bring the two exchanges a bit more in line.
So, short term: if Gox enables BTC withdrawals, Stamp will go down because arbitrage. If Gox doesn't enable withdrawals, Stamp will go down because Gox dying will bring everyone down.
It looks to me like we are out of short-term scenarios where Stamp price goes up?
Most of the time the artificially high Gox price has kept prices on other exchanges high. If Gox goes to 1000+++ tomorrow once/if they reenable withdrawals then it might even pull up the other exchanges a good bit.
Everyone was thinking this and there was actually a small proof of concept earlier today but I think a line has been crossed now... the level of irrationality boggles the mind. People will be looking to get back to fiat until things settle down.

It appears that even though MtGox and Bitstamp have nearly decoupled, they are still very weakly correlated in directional bias.
I think it's quite obvious that MtGox is the main price driver at this point. The other exchanges may have decoupled but the state of MtGox and the question whether it will survive and withdrawals will be restored is still very important for the price at this moment. A higher Gox price will be associated with a higher chance of good news coming out of MtGox and this will cause other exchanges to rise as well with it.
What I have been pondering is whether this directional bias will also be the case if they reinstate withdrawals, or whether the surplus of BTC would drag down the other exchanges. I don't think this can be found out any other way than empirically, so I'm going to be watching very closely, because this will likely decide whether or not we have a longer term bear market. So far, Bitstamp looks strong to me.
After the doors open the price on Gox is going to shoot up to a premium very quickly. This will drag the other exchanges up with it and when the arbitraging kicks in it will reestablish the old disparity with Gox coins being 5-10% more expensive than other exchanges.

In fact, if I could get an instant deposit on Gox, I would deposit all of my liquid assets tomorrow.
I just transferred money this morning and it showed up in my Gox account 15 minutes later (Japan Net Bank method). I would send more but I'm already balls deep... would be a big hit if they actually did run with our money (which I don't think is going to happen but...). If withdrawals haven't been restarted in a day or two and the price is down around $200 I may send more...

Given the amount of negative BTC stories in the popular press this last week I thought I would check out what the Bitcoin Foundation was doing to counter some of it. Apart from a couple of brief blog posts I couldn't find anything - which is very disheartening.
There is clearly a war being waged here (hearts and minds and all that) in the media and it seems BTC isn't even participating, there are a few champions but I'm actually quite disturbed there isn't a greater effort to counter to some of the nonsense being printed.

Yep
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1cexawnOlR8Some old Youtube video isn't a press release....a press release is in text format, has a title and a date, a story and contact numbers for the lead 'actors' in the story....then lazy journalists cut and paste it, may be call a number for a quote, give it to a sub editor who actually does some work tidying it up, an editor waves it through, then it gets printed and lots of people believe its true because a journalist at the [insert name] wrote it.
Most media outlets publish anything that lands on their desk without checking facts (blame time, blame money, blame falling standards). Check out 'businessinsider.com.au' which last week published a press release verbatim about BTC which was a complete lie - Aussies to open world's first BTC bank - the world first actually opens in Cyprus next week.
See where I'm going with this...it's really easy to get your message across but the Bitcoin Foundation aren't participating in the game.....and people wonder why the market is crashing.
Yes, I was being facetious (somewhat). But having said that Andreas Antanopoulos is one of the most articulate and on-message speakers who, in a sense, acts in a similar fashion to what you suggest.
The press-release model, while important, is not necessarily the best way to get the word out. The r/Bitcoin Reddit, for instance, does more to get the Bitcoin message across than any centralized press desk could.
Everyone knows the Foundation is dysfunctional and that their current role is basically limited to code maintenance.

dear fellow bitcoin addicts,
despite all the bad news, the hysteria, prices of $ 100 and 200 on major exchanges, flaws in the protocol, massive attacks, headlines announcing bitcoins death --- more than enough reasons to rationally decide to get out of this madness (most of you with still incredible profits ) ---
despite the fact all the "bitcoin will go down sub 300" bears were actually fucking right (hard to admit. i actually don´t know what is hurting more: the fact my coins are worth less now or that those guys were actually right

)
despite bitcoin being "an experiment", in its infancy, despite of new records of votality,m
despite of all the FUD in the press and in the forums,
despite all of this and more: YOU ARE STILL INVESTED, you are still here, you still give a shit, - in other words: you are a true believer. if the community hodls the coins with balls of steel like we are witnessing right now, if you and me keep smiling, expressing great levels of absolute trust every new second in the midst of this chaos, i say bitcoin is unsinkable. we all depend on money. it´s not a funny game or so. to some it is very serious decision about wealth, future wealth and faith in this new technology that may free us from banks one day.
the fact that current price is above 600 shows a level of trust and support that even the biggest critics must admit was unexpected.
i will end this little message with a firm
CCmy fellowMFI agree... especially when you consider that except for on one exchange the price of Bitcoin held up like boss in the face of wave after wave of bad news and major FUD. Very bullish.

If they were going to begin withdrawals today they'd announce it early so they could be in the office to supervise the process for most of the day. If we don't hear something in the next couple of hours don't expect any withdrawals today.

From where I am sitting things can go either 2 ways here.
Mt Gox survives which means the market won't go any lower than it currently is.
Mt Gox dies and there will be one more big dip.
So the last question remaining is how low will the market go if gox dies?
I am starting to think that whether gox live or gox dies is going to be irrelevant a year from now when at the very least people are gonna wish they had bought in at $625.
its weird i see it the other way around....
Mt Gox survives market will dip on the arb. grab
Mt Gox dies, its finally over, bitcoiners around the world rejoys as price rockets to toward infinity
Just on the previous update the price went up pretty fucking hard instantly. When Gox announces to continue withdrawals in the next 24 hours, shit gonna hit the fan hard.
Gox>$650+ within hours. Stamp starts to follow, so do the others.
From there building it up to the old $900 levels.
This is what the majority of people probably believe. So, being true to form, Bitcoin will do the exact opposite...

Sorry Jorge I can't help myself, I just need to know why?
Because 90% of what has "bitcoin" in it
IS scams or stupid ideas. Starting with attempts to convince the unwary to buy bitcoins "because they will go to the moon" or "a hedge against inflation" etc..
For example, I already mentioned a couple of days ago that student of mine who had been offered to join some GPU-based bitcoin mining enterprise.
I have to check who is on the board of the Brazilian Bitcoin Foundation. I would almost bet that the creator of the BitcoinRain ponzi is there.
Are there a lot of scams related to Bitcoins... Yes
Are Bitcoins themselves a scam... obviously not
Before you disparage a paradigm shift you need to distinguish exactly what it is that you find the problem with. Of course this is a free market and people need to be informed and educated in order to avoid the downsides. But as an 'educator' Jorge I don't feel you're looking at this objectively and I also think you do your students a disservice by casting blanket dispersions on something that has the potential to offer them quite a bit of opportunity. You remind me of talking heads back in the 90s telling everyone to stay away from that dangerous internet because it would corrupt public morality.

I agree except for crashing down as low as $1000.
Yes, I know that past performance is no guarantee but historically,
BTC bubbles have never crashed down anywhere near as low as the previous bubble's high. I'd expect the crash to bottom out somewhere between $1800-$2500.
Historically this would be correct but I don't think there is enough infrastructure in place yet to sustain past trends. I hope I'm wrong though.

the double bottom is in
we are way over sold because of FUD 30K BTC is not going to kill bitcoin
all you fools that are manipulated by market depth are about to get schooled
I feel like the drop was mainly due to 51% attack fear.
It was the perfect storm of the market being slightly overbought, 51% attack fears due to GHash.IO fiasco, SR coin auction news, a little bit of PBOC rumblings, and some FUD about Stamps being the next Gox.
51% attack fears are a little overhyped and I'm sure will be dealt with soon enough. The SR auction only represents the number of coins that naturally come on to the market in the space of 10 days, drop in a bucket. The PBOC statement that came out was neutral but added a little bit of fuel to the fire. And the speculation about Stamps is baseless and just used to manipulate the market. That only leaves the market being slightly overbought. I think we're headed back up as long as we don't get hit by anymore as-of-yet unknown bad news.

Yes. And it means that a lot of traders on Finex are either a crazy gamblers or super bullish on BTC. Or more likely both.

The only people that still care about Gox are the people that lost coins/fiat there.
It's not a small number, don't mistake it for nothing.
A lot of people lost their BTC to MtGox and people want it back.
More importantly, Gox only has about $7 mil left in cash and a lot of people will claim cash over Bitcoins. That means there could be another large liquidation down the road.

No, they open on Friday so we are going down till the weekend.
No, they are not buying.
It really isn't complicated: they will make money on the increase in the value of their fund (probs mainly long with some downside hedging). Hence it is in their interest for the price to be as low as possible on Friday. They have decades of commodity trading experience and deep funding. We are going down till the weekend.
A new deadline. You people just keep creating new deadlines out of thin air. We will go up on that day. That days comes and goes. We still go down and you will simply create a new deadline.

Are you saying that because of this crash the next 'bubble' is going to be epic?
He's saying that if people feel that things couldn't be worse (capitulation) and enough people betting against BTC (shorting) suddenly find themselves getting burned when the price suddenly spikes up, these are the perfect conditions for the next big rally. Historically the previous rallies have all begun like this.

There are 5 million of Bitcoin in some unknown place that can be dumped at any moment.

How exactly are they going to dump them? The address is marked as hacked Bitstamp coins. The second someone tries to move them into fiat they are going to get nailed.

mixers , change small amounts of it to altcoins, localbitcoins , shady deals (enough people out there that would pay 230 for
BTC no matter where they are from
btw , that mark is on blockchain.info website only.
Mixers don't work well and are being de-annonymized. You need to transfer to an exchange to change to altcoins and those coins can also be marked and tracked. Localbitcoins is an option but will leave a trail and requires meeting in person or bank details. Shady deals are possible but difficult to arrange and now that the whole world knows the Bitstamp coins are out there it would be quite difficult to move big blocks of them in this way without raising red flags.

Replace "Bitcoin" with "Steam engine", say it again and see if it still makes sense.

Explain to me how Coinbase is profitable while it is now valued at 12% of the total market cap of BTC?
Without the underlying asset increasing dramatically in value, how do the NYSE investors see ROI?

Investing in crypto business is getting your foot into crypto. If another crypto succeeds, adapting to any coin would be trivial.
Also, see: Velocity of money.

You clearly have self-image issues. Stop being so hard on yourself, you're fascinating! Really

Step away from the keyboard, Ivan's hoe, you're getting belligerent. Here, have a nice gif to feed your Bitcoin dreams

I was actually planning to step away from the keyboard yes, i have other things to do.
Fact is that you'll still be here for the coming hours. And tomorrow again, and the day after that again, the day after that again, the day after that also again. You get the point

You are wasting your life.
Wasting my life? You undervalue Satoshi's Great Social Experiment. Satoshi created a compressed time microcosm that mirrors the bigger reality. Where naked greed is given reign and punished, laissez-faire economy is given a chance & fails, the flaws of Austrian school are empirically shown, and the human animal could be observed & studied like naked mole rats in a plexiglass habitat.

You're fascinating and useful, Bitcoiners. Satoshi has created something wonderful, and I'm not missing a minute of it.
Now go buy some BTC--don't make me shake the box

Ouch, sorry... looks like I struck a nerve there.
Just remember to take your blood pressure meds and antipsychotics and everything will be OK.

AFAIK, Coinbase does not invest in bitcoin either. Their profit does not depend on the price of bitcoin, but on how much USD they process.
I would guess (just guess) that they are valued so much because they plan to become a competitor to PayPal (including dollar-to-dollar payments rather than just bitcoin-to-dollar like BitPay).
+1 They have profit in every transaction, they earn @100$ or @10k$
Would you rather have 1% of $100 or 1% of $10k?
Higher price means more bandwidth means more profit.

I am thinking of opening an account on bitfinex, unless somebody advises against it, if not would anybody have a referred code for it? thanks
Bitfinex with their inside trading (manipulating).. could be new Gox soon. So yah, deposit only as much as you are willing to risk.
You logic doesn't make sense to me.
Assuming their insider information really helps them to gain an effective advantage and thus continuously make them money then you should assume they want to keep this operation running (as is) as long as possible. Why would you assume they are and will continue to constantly loosing money while trying to exploit their presumed (but technically proven to be ineffective) advantage (assuming they make more losses than profits) or choose to steal everything (thus becoming actual criminals) rather than continuing an already profitable operation (without effective legal problems)?
I think the Gox insider trading (Markus/Willy) was presumed to be a last (failed) attempt to recover funds which had been lost already (due to an earlier hack). But the new theories tend to think otherwise (those bots didn't belong to Karpeles but a [inside or outside] hacker who used them to steal the funds).
Well... they admitted inside trading. They already have a gold mine (fees + lending), so why would they need to destroy they reputation with inside trading? I would say there is something wrong. I did a lot of trading there and I still do, but only with a small % of my coins. Just my thoughts

why did karpeles? he had millions form the fees and yet he destroyed his gold mine.
I think the answer is quite simple - he was a poor fucker who wanted more. if spice stops to flow for some reason you can always cook your books and manipulate order books.
Imagine that all the BTC Finex have available for swaps are made up. They use them to short the price and build up huge reserves of cash while driving down the price. At the right time, after they have used the cash they drained out of the ecosystem to buy enough artificially cheap coins, they stop shorting and start letting the price naturally correct.... profit...

unlikely.
if something is made up then it must be cash. when cash dries up you come with a hack or withdrawing story.
Can you explain why this is unlikely?
Bitcoin available for swaps would never leave the internal ledger books if they were lending them to themselves.

I'm assuming you are referring to the troika's demand that Greece submit a bail-out plan that they will not submit, prompting a Greek Gov't shutdown and a massive bank-run.
If this plays out as expected, the Euro will lose value against the GBP, Swiss Franc and USD, but that doesn't necessarily mean it will crash. What it will mean for bitcoin prices is far from certain. I don't see the price appreciating significantly in US Dollars until it becomes more widely utilized as a means to evade capital controls.

Why isn't it being used this way yet??
Because capital controls haven't been implemented to any great degree yet.
I would say it's more volatility, lack of confidence in the tech, and lack of easy ways to move large chunks of fiat in and out of BTC without attracting attention from regulators.

Are whales taking down the $300 buy wall on stamp? It was like 7500 coins a week ago and now its barely 2000.
Support is building on the buy side and the bots are shifting coins back accordingly. No point in whales blowing their wad to take down a wall when gravity and time will do it for them. Also, their is still a dumping mentality among traders so any big moves up in the market will be met with people dumping and taking profits, possibly bringing us down to an even lower level.

Stamp just gave a green light for next leg up

It's gone down to 252 on Stamp. If people start arbitraging between Stamp and the other exchanges it could push the price down now.
The Chinese exchanges are still about $5 USD out in front and don't show any signs of slowing down. If anything, Stamps is going to get dragged along kicking and screaming. That bearwhale that keeps flashing his fake walls is going to have a bad time.

We're still going in the right direction. I'm actually surprised that we're seeing this positive thread right now. Has anyone figured out what is causing this? Greece?
Hey, it does not matter even if this does not happen, we gonna rally until Friday either way..
This is still not clear to me. Exactly what is going to happen after Friday?
We should't have been in this low range in the first place. If you all recall we were well on the way to breaking back into the 300s when a dark market got hacked and bears used it as an excuse to push the price lower... then we got stuck in this whole 'the sky is falling' block-size debate. I see this as a natural correction that was bound to happen sooner or later.

How? Can bitcoin handle more then 7tx/s for the moment?
That's an average 7tx/s. Btc can handle much more in bursts, depends on the timing between blocks. For example, if two or more blocks were found in quick succession and were full, there would be a high number of tx/s for that time frame.

No. We will go back to stable 250-275$.
This spike was caused by LTC cash-out.
Just have a look at all BTC/LTC charts.
Has nothing to do with BTC demand bought by FIAT.
The cycle was very easy:
Accumulate LTC with FIAT or BTC.
Pump LTC like shit (Ponzi in China)
Trade LTC for BTC -> increase BTC price
Sell BTC for FIAT -> drop to levels before the LTC pump
Rinse and repeat. Love that unregulated market. So many people to lose money. Thanks.
Time will tell. The bitcoin 1w chart is looking extremely bullish. Just an uptrend is enough to keep momentum buying to get us over 300 and then once we breach 300 on finex / bearstamp / btc-e things could get really exciting real quick.
Wont happen unless it corrects itself to 255-260$ atleast + greece hype is almost done + blockchain spam dude. BTC will be at >300$ but not this month for sure.
MmmK, It's at 292 on Finex with a bit of momentum still left in it. $8 and 4,300 coins are that separate us from $300. And that's not even taking the crazy Huobi market into account.

there both mining the same chain, I think it's set to be like that for like a year or so? then finally the block limit will increase on XT and the split will happen.
The conditions for fork are 1) after January 11th 2016 2) 75% of blocks carrying XT flag sustained for over 2 weeks. So we could see XT take over as soon as 5 months down the road.
Right now, 11.2% of nodes have switched over to XT. Once that gets over 50% more miners will jump on board and there should be a snowball effect.

We are likely going to push up to max. 450$ but I don't think we are going stay at this level, people are just going to short there and make easy money with a smart s/l...
.... why do people not bother to look back at past bubbles... expand it out and see that there were deep retraces lasting days before the parabolic uptrend resumed... compressed onto a 2 year graph it looks like a straight line up but there are important details being overlooked...

When referring to BTC price generically, we go by Bitstamp's price, here unless otherwise specified.
Accordingly, Bitstamp has not yet gone beyond $400 in the past week - I believe $399.91 is as close as it has been to $400.
"We" definitely do not go by Bitstamp's price here. For a short window between the time Gox collapsed and Stamps got hacked that may have been true but certainly not now.

I'm NOT saying that bitcoin's price is controlled by bitstamp but rather if you are generally referring to BTC's price, then you should get on the same page with everyone else with your price references...
Alternatively, you can specify the source of your price assertion every time that you make one for clarity sake regarding how you arrived at your price reference.
Accordingly, what I said earlier stands, and it is not something that I made up because it is true in bitcoin discussion places other than this forum as well.
I think that your assumption that most people here go by Stamps price is misguided. Finex has been the leading "western" exchange for quite some time and I see people here quoting that price most frequently. And if you don't believe me just ask Chart Buddy...

Another exaggerator.
Maybe exaggeration is contagious?

Out of the top 20 alts, only one is up more than 25%, and out of the top 100 alts, fewer than 15 are up more than 25%.
Are any of the rest of the alts meaningful, or should we look through the whole list of 681 alt/shit coins on coinmarket cap? Do you have another source?
Even though there may be something going on regarding the pumping of various alts, what is going on hardly seems to qualify as "most are up... blah, blah, blah"

Sort results by volume.

It's easy as shit to dispute his arguments. He's basically claiming that if the blocks ever fill up, then Bitcoin has failed. Since Bitcoin can't scale to world reserve currency without really fucking big blocks (133MB with lightning network and way higher without it), it's pretty much guaranteed to have full blocks and a fee market no matter what you do. While I do think Bitcoin needs at least 8MB blocks to remove most of the glass ceiling on price, his logic is not sound at all about it succeeding or failing based on blocks being full or not.
That post might impress Bitcoin noobs into thinking there's some type of crisis, but blocks becoming full was always destined to happen from day 1. The real issue is that Lightning Network does not exist TODAY, and so blocks should be raised so that Bitcoin has more room to grow until that happens, assuming Lightning Network is even the solution to all our problems in the first place. The way I see it, a collateral bid, deterministic block production system with something like 1001 fixed block producers is the only low hanging fruit I see to solve decentralization and on-chain scaling at the moment:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1317450.0I am intersted in the bit where he talks about reversing payments. is what he seems to be saying actually true? if the seller of the goods waits for say 4 confirms does that not still protect him. if it is going to be common place for reversals (double spend) then people will always opt for credit cards and the protection they provide and not move to using bitcoin as much?
RBF (Replace by Fee) only applies to 0 confirmation transactions... as far as I understand it
