I have just seen an ad of WU:

"Send money around the globe for 0 cost"
In small letters: "WU makes profit via conversion fees".

Though they do need to make money for having their shops available, i wonder how good it would be if they had BTC ATM's in there and use the same fee amount as the one in vancouver.

I think we're at or approaching 1 tx a second.. so we need 7x as many were getting now before we start to worry about that.

Imagine the utopian mass adoption that's being fed to the public.

Take a small country (or a large American city) with about 15 million inhabitants, or 5 million households.
Every household will have to do groceries about each other day, so that's 2.5 million customers in supermarkets each day countrywide.
Day has 24 hours, so that's 104166 transactions per hour
= 29 transactions per second

And this is for one small country only, for only the basic needs (food), and that's already 4 times what the Bitcoin network can physically handle.

You're not going to convince me that the Bitcoin protocol will ever be able to sustain a world economy for day-to-day transactions.

Hence why I'll always be bearish, even though it's a great market to profit from atm.

Nonsense. Only a retard would think that a block-chain based currency is efficient for day-by-day purchases as grocery shopping.

As warchwoord said 1MB max block hard limit was placed BY DESIGN. The point of BTC is the universal ledger and the possibility for everyone to run a full node. It's meant to be a safe and decentralized way to store and transfer value (among other things), not to be a micro payment network competing with Visa or PayPal.

99% of BTC economy is driven by investors and speculators, what makes you think that it has to change at some point? You don't buy groceries with gold neither.
Are you calling the whole of Kenya a retard? they use it for day to day shopping for groceries.

I mean maybe it would cause more problems though if it was all fully mainstream

Even if you do not catch the crypto currency wave early, you will still benefit of the fairness and wealth-creating/preserving aspects of this technology.

A new Golden Age.

It's true I was kind of ambivalent about investing at one point because I thought, "If Bitcoin succeeds, just about everyone is eventually going to be rich by today's standards anyway, whether they bought in or not." It's more about how fast you want to get there. If you invest now, you get to experience financial freedom in a year or two, instead of a decade or two.
Come on Zangelbert.  You can't possibly believe everybody is going to get rich?  I mean, sure, if bitcoin is a more efficient method of payment and finance in general, then it will benefit the general population, much like the internet itself has already provided many benefits to the economy. But it doesn't instantaneously transform everybody into millionairs.
If a lot of the world joined bitcoin and we only relied on bitcoin to buy things then eventually people will only be getting 0.001 for their hourly wage for example, it's the ones who hold onto their coins that become a bit wealthier.
I'm holding until $150,000 then wanting to buy a house with 1/4 and then maybe get my airline pilots licence.  Do something for charity. And then if it's reliable to keep as bitcoins then i will with some.

How is it that online wallets are so vulnerable to thefts? Do they all have the same vulnerability which can't be fixed or something?
The common vulnerability is that they are third parties which hold bitcoins on behalf of other people.

It can never be fixed other than convincing people to never let third parties hold their bitcoins for them, but there are ways to make online wallets less unsafe.

is there a safer option (other than paper wallets) where they don't have to download the whole blockchain?

edit: sorry OT
Just get an address from bitaddress (follow the offline steps) And you can get people to put money into it.  Think about the wallet in years to come if you want to withdraw, or i think an atm will work

The blockchain is only 23.5 GB. I can't see that being an issue.

It's an issue as it takes a few days, and many mobile devices can't afford that sort of spare space

meh missed to sell at 808$ I think we´re going deep down slowly  Undecided

Regulation anxiety (assumed risk) has decreased significantly post-hearings..

With fresh blood and continued SecondMarket purchasing, I vote for up, up being more probable (though hopefully at a "Bitcoin slow" rate).

yeah, it's hard to really know what's up.. now moreso than the april bubble and bust. china's fervor has died down a bit, but the senate hearing changes the whole game. it gives the OK for major retailer to start accepting BTC. if we don't hear any big announcements within the next week or two, i think it might take a dip.

Big companies often move slowly....  I'm working with a few 100K+ employee companies, the decision process is 6 months plus.  Then when the decision is made....  They won't even have the forms filled out to get some of their legal department's time allocated to the issue ahead of their PR department's draft cycle which is already backlogged for the Xmas selling season.
The Accounting departments are tied up with the end of year accounting and the quarterly reporting.
Any new development has to go through the marketing department which has to do a funding allocation request a quarter ahead and then the HR department has to get cleared to hire someone who knows something about what a bitcoin is, which then starts the interviewing process.

If you think that is going to happen in a "week or two", you might as well sell now.  Wink

If you see any announcements, it will be because they have been working on it for a year already.
I bet it feels good when you're not at work and you can just say "fuck it i can buy whatever the fuck i want"    Cheesy

a) know for sure you can buy back lower
b) never buy btc again even if it is common form of payment in 20 years.

Oh I did that, I bought 0.22 btc (have 4) but wanted to play on btcchina last weekend but since it's been going down so couldnt sell but now i think i'll just keep it like with my 4.  I was going to keep until it hits £100,000 and then take out 50% or keep it in there if i can purchase a house with it.

900's being a real cocktease.

I really don't get the guys who pile their sell orders on $900. If you think it won't break ATH, just spread your asks below $900. If you think it will break ATH, just pull the ask and let the price slide upwards.

Really, placing an ask on ATH is something I will never understand, but people does that a lot. Never understood the logic in it unless its pure manipulation (inducing the market to think that the resistance on ATH is too high so the price can just go down).

That is why it's called a physiological barrier.
n00b's like when I was one just a little while ago say I'll cash out at 900.

And there you have it a physical physiological barrier.

It's like the unexpected hanging paradox. Everyone *knows* that there will be a major cashout at 1000 so everyone *knows* the fight to 1000 will be fraught with battles and crazy ups-and-downs so everbody *knows* it's better to cash out at 900 so...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unexpected_hanging_paradox
It's like how i go to the presumed busiest mall in manchester (trafford centre) instead of manchester city centre shopping at christmas and finding it suprisingly empty.  I go with that logic a lot and it works.

So say BTC becomes THE global/national currency. For shits and giggles, what do you think that would put the price at? Additionally, those who hold over 1kBTC (which is a solid handful) would have such an influence on our economies. I don't want to discredit anyone who was an early adopter of bitcoin...but if the above was to come true, wouldnt you be worried about the power some of these people hold?

I think overall the new Bitcoin rich will be better than the existing rich, but I'm positively terrified that with all the nutjob libertarian types that congregate around Bitcoin, that we'll end up with the Koch Brothers 2.0.
my fear is the bank ceo's have probably bought bitcoin.  I think it would have been cool if us people who hold the bitcoin (or bitcoin miners) could check the buyers facebook to see if they are of good character to become rich like cool and friendly and not a banker.

Looks like this market wants to consolidate some more before tackling this psychological resistance. Which is pretty bullish.

The longer we sit here, the more forceful the explosions going to be.

I'm curious to see how long this new consolidation lasts. 6 hours? 3 days?

Here is a way:

You weigh it (on an accurate scale), than you measure the volume by putting it into a finely graded  measuring cylinder with some water. Note the increase in volume when adding the gold bar. The volume for one kg gold should be 51.86 cubic centimeters (ml).

Beat me to it. This is why I'd never buy a precious metal, especially gold. How can you ever be sure it's real?

Fairly simple XRF + thermal conductivity + resistivity tests will completely guarantee that a bar of gold is what it says on the face. For extra paranoia there's more complex ultrasonic testing.

That would be brilliant. They could also put coffee shop next to the ATM to give people something to do while waiting for confirmations.

+1

If we can deal with it not looking expensive and getting across that you can spend a dollar via BTC, and it's cheaper than WU - it will be adopted.

People aren't stupid if they can save money - they just need to realise that they can - and it's accessible and practical to someone with 200 bucks to send home.

^ One too many zeroes there.

But anyway, we've been doubling like every ten days. If the trend continues we'll be near 10K by the end of this year. Doubtful, but very much a possibility, especially as part of a final blow-off that ends up crashing into the low thousands.

10K a pop means to blow the market cap from 14.4 billions today to 120 billions

Extremely small chance of that happening. 31th December 2014 yes, but 2013 no.
That would require some extremely good news triggering huge inflows of money from investors. I don't think the current infrastructure would take it.

It has little to do but to put things into perspective, Facebook has a market cap of 115 billions.
Yeah but no-one is really ploughing their savings into facebook.  It would be great if Ebay users used Bitcoin, they already are annoyed at chargebacks from buyers saying they didn't receive the item.  The CC company always sides with their customer.

Nah I don't think he is either, I just mean someone with some money to spare saw an opportunity to manipulate the media and they capitalized. Not exactly ethical, and if the media does any research (I know, laughable), they might reveal the news as such. That'd play into their "pump & dump" rhetoric quite nicely.

I agree. On one hand, no matter what the motives behind these donations were, the kid did receive a CRAZY amount of money for nothing and that alone is perfect material for a news story.

i should follow the local news van around, and wait for the cameras to start rolling. then i'll run across the screen naked, shouting "i love bitcooooooooin."

what about the ones that have bank accounts and promote banks and have money in tax havens.  Oh and also most banks are in a tax have, it's the Square mile called the city of london corporation, that's not even london it's a completely different thing, has different laws and so that's why all the banks are HQ'd there.

yes, Max Keiser, I don't follow his twitter.  I doubt Keiser is big enough to sufficiently manipulate "the" market in a huge way, but I nevertheless think he buys before he start going in full-on hype mode, and then sells.  And he probably has enough followers that it might make a difference.

That is my view yes.  I am pretty darn sure he buys the stuff with his own money.  To what degree he tells himself that he is in it for the right reasons, or whether he truly sees himself as a pumper, that I am not so sure of.  Some people can be very good in deluding themselves with all kinds of rationalisations while taking the route that benefits them the most money-wise.
So should we still be supporting bitcoin then?  He's against the banks isn't he? That's the main reason i liked him but now i'm confused.  I guess bitcoin can't be any worse than the banks

Bitcoin itself is not a pump-and-dump, only the self-serving copycats like quarkcoin are. If they were intended to be honest competition they'd be mined fairly.

As rpietila shows us, even the biggest players have trouble with Bitcoin manipulation these days.

That burgeoning stability is an extremely good sign for its future as a currency - a future quarkcoin lacks.
That's good for bitcoin then Smiley I'm just wandering why keiser is a follower of a dumping program.

the fact that max has mentioned quark coin has pretty much convinced me that he's in the game for the sole purpose pumping and dumping. i'll watch his videos, but fuck him.. i don't think he's some sort of angel.

true, I noticed he follows a pumper on twitter.. https://twitter.com/fontase

Keiser is a pumper allright, no surprise there.

There's a chance some of us here are the ones who really manipulate the market. Chances are we'll never know without one being really honest (or plain fool) just to let us know. As per crashing the market; I find it idiotic and rather inequitable to it's main purpose and concept.

We must understand that it's a 2-way game - either a new economy, or a total bust of the inflated money out there. In either case, it's a win-win situation for the people behind its orchestration, or the banks who might just paid some experts to "invent" it.

Unfortunately I'm on my phone so somebody else is gonna have to finish this problem.

In other news: Gox says WHEEEEEEE!

Edit: I think I can speculate on the answer. With dt limiting to zero you get a maximum for the raise, decreasing to a minimum possible raise for a 60min dt period.

In other words it's not possible to establish a single value for Mr. Magoo's raise, just a function dependent on the number of bets he placed.

Or, perhaps the constant bets size permits you to establish the period...

Damn, now I'm going to have to do this properly when I get some pen and paper. Nerdsniped.

I suspect you're making it too complicated.

Work out the fraction *retained* over a two hour period.

Take the square root, that's the fraction retained in a one hour period.

Cube it, that's the fraction retained in a three hour period

The rest is left as an exercise for the reader. Though I may have missed something in the question.

The growth in power of multinational corporations is already signaling change. If Bitcoin becomes the medium of international exchange, nations will become increasingly irrelevant in the coming decades. Eventually it will be all about the sphere of influence of the largest multinationals, with many smaller client corporations operating in that space.

That's not priced in.

What's price in is that he might be able to dump. All bets are off if/when it is determined that he can and will.

What's not priced in is that a scam of this magnitude sends a sign that Bitcoin hasn't evolved out of the scummy clusterfuck it was two years ago at all.

guess you shouldn't generalise but my Uncle married one, she was obsessed with $ and left him cos his investments didn't turn out well.. other filipinas at work kept trying to hook people up to get their friends and relatives into australia - one old guy bought in, practically got married before they met.. it's quite blatant but I suppose marriages of convenience work for some.

The way I see it though at age 31 in the uk i've never had a british relationship (I had a 2 week date with a latina girl she was confused about whether she liked girls or boys, after then later inviting me to usa with her to do flight training she actually liked girls and i met her american girlfriend over there and stayed there with her for 4 months so i know it was true love for them.)

I've had a 4 day date with a latvian girl living in liverpool, we went latvia ice skating.

I then met a filipina girl on facebook living in singapore with her cousin.  I went singapore and we did fun things like the zoo.  We're still friends, shes gone back to manila to work.  She's not looking for love with me or anything

I'm getting more and more concerned that no-one here seems to want to explore or even counter the 'negative' arguments around bitcoin or crypto...I don't mind reading erudite or informed denunciations of such arguments but everyone seems awful keen to dismiss any naysayers as idiots/fools without actually making a cogent defence.

Did you have a specific concern you want addressed?   Most of us here can see right away that there is not one piece of intelligent thought put into an article like that, so dismiss it.   If there is something you have a question about, ask!   We are then more than happy to share wisdom  Grin

I'm having a similar but more specific exchange with Marcus_of_Augustus o this thread
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=365730.new#new

My concerns are that forum members tend to dismiss negative arguments rather than take the time to counter them.  I've spent a bit of time in real world convincing friends that BTC has a future but I imagine if they came here and saw the responses from members they wouldn't be that convinced.

Every negative article tends to generate a series of ad hom attacks: now, if you were a newcomer/visitor and you saw a respected economist/author (whatever) put their argument and the counter was "he's an idiot' from an anonymous forum member, who would you tend to believe?

There are a lot of intelligent people here but BTC's future tends to be more of an article of faith these days than solid, developing postulations.

If you've been around here you for a while you would see that people have been intelligently postulating since the beginning.
Pretty much at this stage I think the general consensus is that those arguments have been countered to death and there's no point repeating over and over.
Exactly, that's why we have libraries and now google for searches lol.

Though I am all for questions that may have been answered before if they are difficult to put into words and hard to find in searches or they want something that's time critical or is something that may have changed over time.  It's always good to re-discuss things.

What? why call me a foreigner in that tone?  What are you trying to say?  Rude person you are...I practically live in asia so don't even go there.  Thailand isnt where i'm searching for love.  And at 31 and had no relationship whatsoever, not even a friendship, why can't i find a friend in the friendly places (no sex wanted)

I'm going to singapore, phil, and maybe thailand in january to find my partner.

This could end in tears if you are not careful. Trying to get this sorted in a month is just asking for trouble.

I spent 8 years in Thailand learning the culture and the language. Anyway, best of luck.

I think TA should be used with real caution now, since the fundamentals have improved and we have a lot of bigger players entering. Just some advice for the people who focus mainly on TA.

I don't know, really. What else do you have, other than TA?

I mean, fundamentals are subject to interpretation as well. There is no "objective" way to look at news/fundamentals... the market reaction to the Silk Road bust is a perfect example for that.

My point is, TA is just as useful or not useful as it always is.

Perhaps what you have in mind is better phrased as: "don't cling to *outdated* assumptions from TA".

I remember one of the mantras being repeated after the April peak/crash was that "price has to deflate back all the way" (which was either ~15 USD = price at beginning of the rally or ~30 USD = previous ATH). In reality, final capitulation was at ~60 USD, off by a factor of 2.

* * *

The current situation still fits into my own expectations... we went up pretty nicely over the last weeks, and with some extra force in the last few days, and I still consider it a real possibility that we're seeing an early end to the post-December peak bear market. On the other hand, we have what could be a (spread out) double top at 1070/1090, and there's also a real chance we're still going to go down much further.

I'm not tempted to re-adjust my position quite yet. If we go through 890-900 (mtgox) *with force*, and close below it, I'm starting to get worried. Well, not really, but I would consider the "continued bear market" scenario more likely again.

Yes indeed, this is what i meant.

So guys beware, the landscape is changing really fast now. Please keep this in mind with the decisions you make and adopt to them. I hate to see early adapters left behind.
I left my Adapter behind once luckily singapore has the same plug as uk  :p

Bitcoin gained fame in China after film star Jet Li's charity One Foundation received a donation in the currency in April to help the victims of an earthquake.

In recent weeks there have been a series of articles highlighting its use as a way to circumvent restrictions on money transfers out of the mainland - a factor that analysts say has helped propel a surge in Bitcoin's value.

As long as you have the wallet and password, of course you could spend your money

It may take hours and days. If you don't want to wait, you may switch to a lite client such as Electrum
Thank you, it just gets complicated for me if i was to switch wallets.  I wasn't even able to just move blocks to my laptop from pc as it messed up so i'll wait.  So i could send the bitcoins and then it just wont update till whenever but the guy on the other side would get them immediately?

hahahahaha...

The reason is because, for some strange reason, the one instrument marching band, BJA, has disappeared from this thread and has NOT been trolling in recent days.

He (BJA) is probably out trying to figure out his story in order to make a come back and to tell us about his having had made "mucho bucks" in the latest BTC price movement because of our small blocker stupidities.

don't worry.. i got the trash talking covered while he is away .

I made a few bucks lending out my fiat to bulls. The interest rate has shot up.  Look, I don't know for sure if we're going to get a network congestion crash, but it's a very real risk.  I have a higher percentage of my net worth in BTC than almost anybody else here. I HOPE I'm wrong, but it's just plain irresponsible not to factor in the danger when we are running so close to maximum capacity and getting closer every day.

The Blockstream core devs have an incentive to overstate the problems with large blocks. They have an incentive to restrict network capacity and keep it congested. That doesn't automatically mean that they are acting on those incentives, but if they are, it would explain a lot of their actions and rhetoric.

What I am more worried about is the possibility that there is an ongoing rough consensus attack that will keep ANY resolution from being implemented until Bitcoin loses first mover advantage. But I guess it doesn't ultimately matter if the impasse is intentional or not. What matters is whether or not Bitcoin is really anti-fragile, and that is unknown at this point.
I don't know what you just said lol...anyway btc to the moon Smiley

I'm saying the transaction relay network may crash when it gets so close to full capacity that transactions fail, get repeatedly resubmitted which makes the congestion and failure rate worse, and this condition will remain until there is a market crash and enough people stop using Bitcoin to clear the backlog. If this happens in conjunction with the high profile launch of a competing cryptocurrency, it may be enough to overcome Bitcoin's network effects and turn us into the MySpace of crypto.
Thank you  Smiley

I had weathered a big drop before, and kept my BTC, but lost interest in it for a couple of years (no mining, no posting here, etc.). Long time hodler so, but mostly invested in the stock market. When we passed 2000€ a few months ago I decided that the stock market wasn't good enough, sold all I could and more than doubled my BTC stash.

I wasn't entirely sure of my hodler resolve after that bold move, since BTC went from ATH to ATH, there was no test of it.

When it went down the other day, I can't say I was happy (for one I had no fiat to buy the dip), but dumping never even came up in my mind.

So now I'm more certain than ever, hodl !

My coworkers want me to sell too. I have told them that my goal is to leave them fending for themselves while spending my days drinking mojitos on a beach, but they don't understand, they don't believe it's possible.

But i don't see a difference because when the fork happens, say bitcoin drops 10% because people go into the other fork then you buy back that extra from the fork but it's like a seesaw because we all go into that one bringing the other price down and then we buy the other back and then it goes up so you don't win anything really.

When I made my first Bitcoin $1mCAD, I splurged and bought myself a nice little Gallen-Kreuger bass amp. Cost me about $1.2kCAD.

I bought it with dollars though. There's no way I'm parting with even a single satoshi unnecessarily.

I personally think John Macafee's dick is safe.
Nice, well if i can wait until $300,000 i should be able to live in the place that i normally go to in Asia.  Right now i'm doing it in 4 month stints on my normal YT earnings but it's not enough to go full in for a year, it's nearly there but bitcoin would allow me to not worry about any other money for 20 years if i divided that amount per month is £900.  I can live off less than that right now £250 per month.

Better goal is $1 Million and buy an apartment in Hong Kong far out of the city and then rent the other small room on airbnb

somebody wake me up

Are the ATH's crashing through the roof not enough to get your attention? Wink

PS: That moment when you need to write ATH's as if it was a frequent thing.

Pump is far too feverish and managed looking. Only pumpers benefit from a pump like this. Somebody is pursuing an agenda.

I'm increasingly convinced that this is what's going on:

I'm confused about pumps and dumps.

So it means

I have 1 million

So sell 1 mill of btc for very low price to make price go down and then buy back when price is fully down

BTC to $45,000 is my goal! I only have 0.44 worth of BTC but if it hits my goal then I might be able to afford a deposit for a house when I finish my final year of uni! (It has 6months to make it lol...) A man can dream! Smiley
Why not wait till 1 million

This Steepness Reminds me of when i was climbing near Taipei and thinking it was easy with this rock wall in front of me with steps etched into the stone until i turned around and s%%% myself, i then reached for the pole on my left and stayed there for like 5 minutes, thinking i can't move but also that i really need to take a picture (forget the filming of the airport which i was intending to do) and then slowly touch each pole with my feet as i slide down

How's the weather around those parts? I require interesting travel destinations.
I Stayed March till the end of July

It was comfortable at 86F but then during July it was 96.8 day time and 87.8F at night.  Having Air Con on in the room set to 78.8 (i'm converting from Celsius) felt like walking into a fridge

Lovely sunny skies.  There's another mountain i think it's 3000 feet called mount miantian which is fun, you can get the bus near to the top.

Kenting is a nice beach area in the south of the island.

I like Hong Kong too, some good mountains like lantau

Remember kids:

Futures whale traders that need more supply will gladly short bitcoin and pump the alts to entice you to part with your btc.  Wink

can't ignore current alt-prices are inviting  Cheesy
I usually hold.  I bought LTC at 14 then it went to $3 but i waited until now.  I sold at $120 because of BTC in it's low valley which is unusual that LTC goes up and BTC goes down so now i've put the LTC money into BTC and see if that rises back 2k and then put that back into LTC afterwards.

Bob

keep us posted on how this develops...seriously.

We all know exchanges are a (for now) necessary evil/tool of the man, but if Coinbase is actively handing out fuckings à la Kraken we need to know.
At the fees they charge for selling BTC and buying back in, i'm hoping they have enough money to be reputable but i don't know.  If i have a wallet, my hard drive will probably break or paper would be lost but i may think about doing it as a paper wallet if im only holding 1 btc to 1 million

Is the volume those bars at the bottom on bitcoinwisdom?  also where is the best place to see orders?

Good morning Bitcoinland.

I see we're still going pretty much sideways, exactly where we were 5 days ago and 3 days ago... currently $14390USD/$18120CAD (Bitcoinaverage).

Old coins are currently worth $17280USD/$21765CAD each (Coinmarketcap).

Oh? Korea "banned Bitcoin"? Ho hum.

Yawn.
Not really that bad, news just making it sound bad to make btc plummet i think

"South Korea, which is one of the biggest markets in the world for bitcoin, said it was preparing a ban on opening anonymous cryptocurrency accounts and new legislation to enable regulators to close coin exchanges if they felt there was a need to do so."
