While all miners work from the most recently discovered block (think of it as the "original" block), the selfish mining process begins when a pool of miners discovers a new block and doesn't publish it. The selfish pool then begins working on discovering yet another block, mining from this hidden one. Meanwhile, the rest of the "honest" miners are still wasting resources mining from the original block.

Can you mine FROM a "hidden" block? This makes no sense to me.

Sure, you can mine a block, not publish it, and continue mining. But unless your pool has 51% of the network, the odds are the rest of the network will invalidate the block you are hiding, and then you've just lost a block and have to start over. It does nothing to harm the network, just yourself.

From what I read, the attack requires them to find 2 blocks before anyone else finding the same first one they found.  Easier said than done.  The averages are WAY against it.  You might get away with it once or twice ever, but it's certainly not going to bring down bitcoin.

I think we will know when bitcoin has attracted too much attention when the US Government outlaw it. As in, anyone doing business in bitcoins is classified as a money transfer business and either has to get a licence or quit it. At the moment the wall street bankers are attracting most of the attention of Government trying to recoup some money from 2008 fiasco. But if bitcoin gains too much attention, and somehow is no longer is allowed in the USA, see how strong the coin will be then.

i'm in the us and am worried about this scenario. I assume the price would drop dramatically if the US tried to ban it, but if China and much of the world uses bitcoin, wouldn't the value simply spring back up?

If the Second Market list is investing in Bitcoin, then this is extremely unlikely.  The more hedge fund managers that get involved, the better.

Now we will get a few more mini-dumps from people who are slow on the panic button.  I imagine these people where elbow deep in a bag of cheetos when the saw the dump go down on bitcoinity. They tried to click "PANIC" on their computer, but the cheeto dust made their fat, stubby little fingers too greasy and their fingers kept sliding off.  By the time they were done sucking the orange toxin off their digits everyone else here had already laughed off the dump.

Cheesy

I try not to keep any BTC anywhere which might enable me to panic and reaction sell, for this very reason (not so I can eat cheetos, however.  In fact, wtf are cheetos?)

Puffed corn chips covered with orange-colored MSG pretending to be cheese.

I think my new strategy is if this goes down to 100$ just buy more and hold. I fail at trading and bitstamp is my new home and is unreliable for trading anyway.

So, it sounds like your new strategy is going to be kicking yourself because you didn't buy at $200.

if history were to repeat itself (2011 high of $32, 2013 high of $266), just from a log graph perspective, what would be the next bubbles' ATH?

in other words, stable price->$32, then stable price->$266...

what was this bubbles' (if it is a bubble, i haven't a clue) stable price, and what would the top be if we only look at the previous two bubbles' stable->ATH?

just curious

I figured it out on another thread.  It was $450-$500 if it behaved the same as before.  Which, of course, nothing ever does.  It will be interesting to see if the Chinese drag us up again tomorrow.

A rough estimate:

This is pretty much spot on.

not yet, I think. We're still in March if you make this comparison.

Would someome pay $1,000 for a currency he cannot practically use for the next few years? I think this runup may be somewhat limited this time. It gets harder for BTC to continue annual multipliers of 10-20x.

On the other hand. Prices in this range (and better market access being provided) enables some bigger shot investors to get into the game. The market can eat quite a few dollars for breakfast nowadays.

EDIT: bitcoin functions pretty well as a store-of-wealth. No need to be able to buy pizza at this point. It's however becoming increasingly possible to do so. (lieferservice.de, for example).

And in America, you can buy Papa John's pizza gift cards on Gyft or eGifter.  (And they don't cost BTC10,000.)

when the chinese buyers decide to take a profit, you had best be headed the same direction, faster.

meanwhile, if the same number of bitcoin are bought in the lit market today as yesterday, then the price will go over 3000 yuan.
since that can't happen, either someone will buy the wall at usd 335 on bitstamp, and send it to btcchina, or else the dam will break tonight.

This is no crash.

Everyone is coldly calculating and waiting for a crash and cheap coins.

These are not the conditions for PANIC. I sometimes wonder and think we won't be seeing any more big panic runs for a few years.

There's $15 million worth of coins that CAN'T panic sell.  And probably more than that.  And more people understand that "buy and hold" is the best strategy.

It's not the same as the April Mt. Gox DDOS days.

Do not swing-trade or daytrade unless you know. I don't know any [b
successful bitcoiners[/b] who daytrade.

daytrading works on high volatility days when crashes and corrections occur. If the price is making 15%+ swings, this will give you enough room to pay your commissions and have a margin of error to make mistakes and still profit.

How much did you make daytrading (y-t-d), and how much could you have made doing something else?  Roll Eyes

Does that include your power consumption?

heh power consumption being really really optimistic and selling at 600 bucks BTC at www.mtgox.com  minus the $7,131.80 USD I spent w/shipping (and not counting power supply)for the KNC Jupiter i have....I'm under those more then rosy conditions at 21 coins @$12,600 USD....minus $7131.80 that is $5,468.20 ahead and I'll have been mining 1 month tomorrow 11/18 as of 8:30pm CST USA.....as for electric it is a bit less then 100 bucks I think around 80 bucks but call it 100 cause I've been home a lot babysitting miner and giggling so more use on other computers and such this month

of course it will all go boom and I will probably be looking at 1/2 ROI on Monday after the U.S. House hearings ...or some such bad news...but hey that works too for 1 month of mining I have a Jupiter hashing 555gh consistent ..just put the new firmware on now 0.99 its hashing at around 564gh consistent....

p.s. er as I ordered the Jupiter on July 1st I think BTC was 60 bucks or some such yeah better of getting BTC direct I would have been but no body imho noob wise jumps in with 7k or more in speculation...we always start with equipment...now in the future with how asic mnfg stuff trickles out etc etc I may change my tune but this is what I seem to hear how most start in bitcoin with miners (or did back in the early early days of summer 2013....)

And 25 days ago the price was $150.

$7,131.80/$150 = 47.54533333 BTC

47.54533333 * $600 = $28,527.20

You would have made more with buy and hold.

The spread between Gox and Stamp is getting ridiculous. Even in % terms.

stamp 510
gox 600 (+17,5%)
china 635 (+24,5%)

That's big

And the fact that nobody in the world can arbitrage this shows how little control of our money we really have.

A bit off topic, but what's the best way to get USD into any of the exchanges quickly*? I used to use bitinstant but that's down. Wires all seem to take 10 days. I need some capital ready to soak up the blood bath Sad

Since what happened tonight, I need a new one too...

Coinbase will lock in a price instantly, and deliver your coins in 5 business days (a week to you and me).

But there are a few problems with this strategy:

1. Must have a US bank account
2. Must have already completed a couple microtransactions
3. 10 BTC per day limit for buys (unless you do KYC)
4. Typically higher than Bitstamp and BTC-e, less than Mt. Gox though.
5. They are all out of coins at the moment.

I have never gotten a "tip" but I figure I have not had any posts worth of one.

Now I suppose if I could come up with some heart wrenching story?

The only story I have right now is that our new dog we got for our daughter (she begged for one and we picked one up at a shelter) is not the "Italian Greyhound Mix" that they said it was and it seems to actually be part Pit bull.  My father-in-law lives behind us and does not like our new dog.  He is a bit of a grumpy old man and has instigated things so now our new little dog is out to get him and he accidentally got out and then bit his hand.  So we were afraid that we would have to give up the dog which caused many tears around here.  Cry  It is especially sad because the little dog is just frightened of the mean grandpa and acting out of instinct.  We have decided to install a $800 fence/dog run in the backyard instead that will at least serve as another level of protection for the dog and grandpa.  So our sob story is that we cannot buy anymore Bitcoin.  We have to buy a fence to keep our little shelter dog.  Or find a new home for Grandpa! (this would require much more than $800 though)  Bitcoin tips accepted. Grin

This is all true, but probably still not tip worthy!  LOL

Hey, babe.  Didn't you hear?  We don't need any tips.  We're "rich retards" from America.

I gave 0.01BTC to a friend last night. It took less than 2 minutes for him to install a wallet on his phone, me to initiate the transaction and get 1 confirmation.

I suggest everyone who can do something similar Smiley

And in the US, you can e-mail anyone from Coinbase and it will prompt them to make an account to pick it up within 60 days.  After that, if they don't, it reverts back to you.

I borrowed $2 cash for the vending machines from a fellow bitcoin user and mailed him back $2 from Coinbase at the exact same time.  (Probably worth $6 now.)

He signed up with Coinbase and got the $2.  Couldn't have been easier.

Looks like $2200->$500 to most people on here.  That's 77%.  I'm saying if we got to $2200, I wouldn't expect it to go below $1500.

Now, that's not to say that some large players couldn't get together and collude to crash the market harder, but there's no guarantees doing that so they probably wouldn't dare to risk it.

Yes they're just speculations.

This is bitcoin.

The minute you think you know something, you don't.

You can check my track record.  When I said we would never hit double digits again, we never have.  When I said we would never see the 100s again, we never have.  Now I'm saying we'll never see the $200s again.

I don't make exact predictions but wide guidelines and not randomly but because I understand logarithms and populations and game theory.  I don't think you really understand what it would take to see $200 again.  Or to drop below $1500 if we ever got to $2200.  Once we actually GOT to $2200, it would make $1500 very difficult if bitcoin is ultimately adopted.

Now if it fails, all bets are off...  But then none of us will care anymore because the mining block will be stuck forever and you won't be able to move any coins around.

Every aborted crash is extra confidence in the $800 level.

I agree, but this is also confusing for me. It feels like we are "burning in" the $800 price... and yet it is so high above the exponential growth trend line.

*shrugs* I am just a buy & hold kind of guy, but my friends keep asking me if they should buy bitcoins, and I'm not sure what to tell them at these prices (... I always say yes, but I hesitate!)

The exponential trend line is a myth. Media awareness may grow at an exponential rate at first, but there is a "hype" effect that will cause it to eventually depart the exponential trajectory.

I believe we are seeing that now: all time Google Trends high, it is showing up regularly on network news, etc. It's not reasonable to assume that we can go from occasional web journalism to news networks without departing the trend.

Also, the amount invested by every individual joining the ecosystem will grow over time, since there's an intangible measure of "trustworthiness" Bitcoin gains by surviving each successive bubble.

Trend lines are fantastic predictors of the past, but their predictive power for the future is not so simple; you are drawing this trend, then assuming that the trend is created by some fundamental mechanism of growth. Unless you are correct in the assumption of some fundamental mechanism which will continue into the future, the trend will fail to accurately predict.

So really, without thinking about what the mechanisms of growth really are, it's just a blind guess.

When we're done, we'll just realize that it was a steeper growth curve than we thought at the time and that we were at a different spot in the curve than we thought.

But yeah, if the Square/Starbucks rumor is true, then next week will be VERY interesting.

Daytrading Bitcoins is a dangerous game, and a completely reckless game during a bull market.

Most in here delude themselves by seeing their fiat profits going up, so they don't feel so bad by losing coins.

I'd say that:

a) more than 5 trades per month is reckless, considering the high fees + slippage.
b) the only good moment to trade is a bear market - and there's is no bear market ATM (this could change in the next days/hours, but I wouldn't bet on it).

That depends entirely on what your stance is.

If you are in it to make profit in USD (like 99% of this market is doing atm), day trading to get USD gains is perfectly fine. And I say, in a market where there's currently (and practically always) the looming danger that the value of BTC goes through half, securing FIAT profits is not that bad an idea.

If you are a utopian true believer in BTC, believing it will go to 1 million USD per coin no matter what, yeah obviously don't sell then.

Even as a true believer in bitcoin believing that it will go up to at least 6 figures, I'm still going to sell some long before that.  I'm not a fool.

I hope he does but hes under no obligation to do so. I was planning on buying back in at a lower price, thinking we might see the $600s again. The stability of the past 3 or 4 days has been making me really edgy for some reason though I'm very confident Bitcoin will go into quadruple digits next year but at the moment I think it's too soon. I'm imagining a lot of sell offs before christmas but at this rate who knows!

Well if this is the general sentiment it just means that we are going up and fast.

There really isn't enough merchants accepting Bitcoin yet, I know its still very early days in the grand scheme of things but you would of thought we would be hearing many more big companies getting on board given all the media attention recently.

Also a big sell-off just before we hit $1000 again is guaranteed in my opinion, especially if its a slow gradual build up. If there is a lot of pace behind it then I'm sure those looking to sell would hold off and see where it goes.

Yeah.  Websites don't take any time to change at all.  Especially when it comes to getting the money right.  Especially a new payment system that is completely different.

Anyone got any speculation for where we are headed in the short term?

Seem's like everyone's just so surprised we broke $1000 nobody planned any speculation for afterwards, and I need speculation.

Surprised ? Who ?

When it was crashing from 900 and we reached 550 USD I said : It will fall below 500 but 400 will hold. If 400 holds then we will hit 1000 USD within the next 10 days. And here we are 7 days later... All correct.

Expect more of the same, going up strong with some corrections/ crashes on the way. For exemple we maybe hit 1600 before crashing back to 1200, then resume rise.

I believe it can again double by the end of the year to 2000 USD. A more conservative estimation is 1500 USD by the end of the year.
In 2014 I believe we'll witness the bull through the 4 digits with the 5 digits in sight. When we reach 5 digits is anyone's guess but I personally see it happen within 12 months.

In a system of logarithms where your value goes up 10x in 10 months, the 1s should take about 4-5 of those months.

Even if we go up 10x in 5 months, like we did this year, the 1s should still take 2-3 months.

People want their money out of Slovenia now that the government took over the 2nd largest bank in the country and shafted Polish shareholders?  There was an article on here about that somewhere.

Just a guess.

My sincere apologies if I ever gave the impression that I had any sympathy or respect whatsoever for the libertarian ideology.  If you care, I could try to remove any lingering doubts you may have about my opinions on the matter.

By the way, I am still trying to figure out what exactly is the "freedom" that the bitcoin "libertarians" are so obsessed about.

It seems that most of them are in the US or "US-like" countries, so it cannot be freedom of speech, religion, travel, residence, association, study, dress, drink, sex, marriage, work, property, trade, investment, enterprise, and many other basic freedoms that the citizens of those countries enjoy to a higher degree than most other people in the world (and that bitcoin cannot do anything about anyway).

So, what exactly are those "freedoms" that the "libertarians" miss, and hope to get through bitcoin?

Freedom from bank bailouts and the continued devaluation of the dollar.

Wow, dude.  I don't even know what to say.  If you have to go back a year to barely find dirt on somebody, I think you have probably accomplished the opposite of what you were trying to do.

So any ideas what this "Big thing" and "#ToTheMoon"  tweet by Bitpay is all about?

https://twitter.com/BitPay/status/465206481474686976

They followed up with this video, but I don't know if this is it.

Purse IO

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6B5bM8X-sLM

Basically, Purse.IO has you add items to your Amazon wishlist and offer to pay for them in Bitcoin at a 10%-15% discount.  Then, people in countries where bitcoins are not readily available like China and India sign in and buy the items for you and have them shipped to you.

When you get the items, your bitcoins are sent to the foreign buyer.  You get cheaper items.  They get an easy way to buy bitcoins in a country where it's not easy.

Interesting news today from Ebay's CEO.  From a shareholders meeting Q&A session:  "Carl Davis, Jr of the Silicon Valley Black Chamber of Commerce asked Donahoe what he thought of Bitcoin in regards to global trade. The CEO called it a new, exciting and emerging technology. "We think Bitcoin will play a very important role in the future. Exactly how that plays out, and how we can best take advantage of it and enable it with PayPal, that's something we're actively considering. It's on our radar screen."

Here is the article: http://www.ecommercebytes.com/cab/abn/y14/m05/i14/s01

The key word there is "actively".  That has a meaning in the business world and makes me wonder if the Bitpay/Ebay rumors are true.

Yes.  You should ALWAYS take your coins out of exchanges unless you have an imminent trade.  Did people learn nothing from the Mt. Gox closure?

The service allows consumers to pay in bitcoin from any mobile device with SMS functionality via a ‘gateway’ in the user’s country of origin.

Quote
Anyone wanting a 37Coins wallet can set one up at the company’s website, but, for people lacking web access and/or smartphone, a hosted wallet is automatically created once a small amount of bitcoin is sent to their cellphone number.

Quote
The service acts virally and once, say, Alice has bitcoin in her new wallet, she can send funds on to Bob – thus creating a wallet for him, and so on.

Quote
The reason 37Coins sees SMS as the best way to reach the most people, is that almost everyone now has access to a cellphone. According to the International Telecommunications Union, cellphone penetration will reach 95.5% globally by the end of 2014 – far higher than the roughly 40% of people using the Internet globally.

Quote

Coinbase has been doing this for a while, but only in the US.  I can send bitcoins through SMS to anyone's e-mail address and it will send them an e-mail asking them to set up an account.  If they don't in 30 days, the coins return to the sender.

Oh, and Coinbase does it for free.

Are stamp problems are related only to $ withdrawal requests?

It seems so. I haven't heard of anyone being asked ridiculous stuff like this withdrawing BTC but Stamp was my reliable exchange that even if I did some trades elsewhere Stamp was the fiat gateway.

Can anyone confirm? And how much money must it be for these kind of problems to show up?

Read around there has been a few stories of these new requirements going around. Thats the main issue, there is no advertised threshold that you bump up against these problems. The guy was trying to draw max $4000, thats pocket change! The other explanation is its worked out on trade volume but how fucking retarded. I could trade the same 10 coins 1000 times or do one 10k trade, which one should raise the most flags?

He said it was nearly 500 coins.  That makes it nearly a quarter million dollars.  I can see why they want docs for that.

Me too, actually.  I'm fine as long as bitcoin goes up in the next 10 years or so.

And if it goes to zero, I just have to keep working like a normal person.  No biggie.

But I just couldn't stand to see someone giving such horrible advice to sell right now.

mBTC is logical as does every SI unit (from KBTC all the way to uBTC). Bits is ridiculous.

SI is not logical to most Americans because they have never used it (although the more scientific among us, like myself, agree that it's the most logical).

In the event of no good or bad press, based on the charts we're due for another pop over 630 approximately June 2-3.

I've been saying it for the last few days and I will say it again. $666 by Monday. Once the walls are removed/eaten that's the next stop. It seams to be a favorite hangout spot and then we will either crash back to $610-$605 or continue our rise. If we break $700 we will see a new ATH before any significant down turn.

I'm not saying you're wrong about $666 after the weekend, or even breaking $700 fairly soon. But I keep wondering how people can start seriously getting excited about the next ATH when volume still looks like this:

At some point between now and a new ATH we will need to see at least the volume of the peak days. Right now, we're at about a third to a fifth of that peak volume.

To be clear: that's not my way of saying that this rally is doomed. just that it seems way premature to even mention a new ATH before we're seeing similar volume spikes again as we did before, with upwards of 100k coins per day USD volume (and, yes, I'm okay with summing over stamp, finex and btc-e to have that count towards 100k)

Because many of us believe that a lot of volume has gone off-market, but strangely still has a similar effect on the price.

Yes, and I've seen adds for "Senior Member" accounts for sale.  Perhaps people run comment-bots and then sell the accounts.

Anybody get a circle.com invite yet?

From my understanding, you have to go to their website to request an invite, and I made such an invitation request about a week ago.

However, I have received No invite from them, so far.

I would also be curious whether anyone has used their service(s) to purchase and/or sell bitcoin, yet.

I requested and no invite.  Several days ago there was a blog post on their site answering questions and it seems the #1 question was, where is my invite? The following is part of their answer.

We are not in general release whatsoever.

Making this worse from a Bitcoin pro’s perspective: The product is designed for casual consumers, so the initial invites have gone to those sorts of profiles rather than those who already breathe ECDSA crypto and the like. We’ll certainly expand, as we need the harsh feedback of the pro Bitcoiners just as well, but we will not expand quickly enough to please everyone.

Profiles?  My "profile" consisted of my name and email address.  The answer seems to be that we are still in the hype phase and that their answer is bullshit.

Thanks.  Their answer seems a bit strange to be attempting to expand into a certain kind of user based on their invitation request.  Probably, they fear that  people will over use their site if they expand very quickly at all - b/c zero fees will create a trading incentive (like what goes on in china).  Zero fees seems to good to be true.

I agree that zero fees seems too good to be true.  One thing I noticed in their demo youtube is that when making a deposit it lists both a circle fee and a bank fee, but they are both set to FREE.  This might indicate that the coding to handle fees is already there, so they can easily add the fees in the future.

Circle told me that I am approved for an invite and that they will be contacting me shortly.  I'll let you know when it happens.

THIS IS THE LAST UPDATE OF THE LIST

chosen date of     petahashminer where allready taken so can give one UNTILL     MAXIMUM 23.59 UTC 19-09-2017    so 20 september 2017

I will take 16/10 if available.  That was my Mom's birthday.   She is in heaven now but the date is still very meaningful.

Reason for the rise? Bear trap will have ended by then, China FUD hopefully over by then.  New users on Coinbase and other exchanges that are just waiting on the sidelines will sense some FOMO and new ATH will ensue.
