I seriously laughed my ass off at this. Someone is having a lot of fun. You can see the current BAR at the bottom right corner, less than a fifth of what it was just hours ago, and a ~3month low.

300.

That is the last line in the sand for anyone trying to hold bitcoin down. I expect a big battle there and if the bulls break through 300 then the football held under the water will be released.

The climate has changed. I have been buying every week for six months and the downtrend is definitively broken. The bears lose by the price just staying where it is with the halving drawing closer each month. It is dangerous to say it but we know bitcoin will do it's thing at some point in the next year Smiley

Actually they are not paying a shit ton ... the spam is being sent with minimal fees, and as it is not being processed (because it can't because of block size) it is wiped from Mempool after 24hrs ... rinse, repeat ...
Only by processing the transactions will it cost the spammers anything.
This is my understanding of the situation anyway, from following Cypher's thread.

Without a doubt tho, IMO, it has something to do with the block size debate and is not an actual attack on BTC itself.
Somebody is trying to prove a point. At the moment they are proving that BTC can function fine with more tx's flowing thru the network, so bandwidth is not an argument

If you want a transaction processed, all you have to do is add at least the normal fee of .0001 and it should go thru fine.

https://tradeblock.com/blockchain

From here you can see that there are 90k spam tx in Mempool backlog, and total fees of 4.5 BTC, giving an average fee of 0.00005. Given that genuine tx's will be being sent with minimum .0001, and many with more than that, the fees on the spam are tiny, hence the backlog should only affect anyone who wants a fee-free tx. Boo-hoo ...

Personally I think it's actually showing how robust the system is.

EDIT 2: I am not sure which the spammer is fighting for as he is proving that the nodes are not collapsing with the extra tx in the Mempool, the block size being the limiting factor in clearing it. Meanwhile a Fee-market is developing, whereby anyone paying a bit more is still guaranteed a fast transaction. If anything, its just proving how versatile and adaptable BTC is.

Agreed.  Cheesy

The winklevii already have investors ready to buy as soon as they go live.  They know alot of high power people.

I don't doubt they know powerful people but powerful people are "usually" powerful as they are fairly intelligent.

Now, I am mildly semi intelligent and I know if I were them I'd buy before Gemini is launched and the price potentially rises.

Why wait for the winkles?

I am not sold on this Gemini exchange doing much at all to the price. Not moon bound anyway but............

I really hope I am wrong and everyone points and laughs at me.

There is nothing new anymore about a regulated exchange. And with the swedish ETN the Twinkletossers ETF has lost much of it's novelty. But they somehow get all the media and all the fat cats to listen to them. Often just to point and laugh, but listen they do.

Don't get me wrong. I still think a fully regulated ETF listed in NY is a big deal, just not as big as it was. And with the other exchanges, the ETN and general acceptance of BTC in financial circles, we don't need the Facepalm Bros to launch this mofo.

Agreed. The twins have been slow, I don't see Gemini pushing the price higher..

But I've read a lot of good news lately. They will get priced in, sooner or later.

Ethereum isn't going replace Bitcoin. It's a platform for a new way of approaching the internet. It's the only alt project I see much point in.

Not a loaded question, just wondering if you have a better insight into this topic: Care to explain in one or two sentences what Ethereum can do that the Blockchain plus possibly pegged side chains plus some hardware infrastructure linked to these can't do? Never really understood the point of a "Turing complete crypto", I guess.

Eventually Bitcoin and side chains will probably make Ethereum useless. Until then, it's a good altcoin and PoC.  Wink

Sincere question:

Do you believe the mathematics of fibonacci sequences has anything at all to do with the supply/demand bitcoin market intrinsically?

OR: Do you believe that many traders believe that, so the effect will be the same?

OR: something else?

Bitcoin is really different from any asset/commodity. Something like Bitcoin never existed. Thank you Satoshi.

Anyway, traders still look at the same models / lines so you can apply technical analysis to Bitcoin. But don't forget fundamentals.
We had a supply shrinkage after the halving and more and more people want to buy Bitcoin while it's rallying (you can't say the same when the price is going down). Remember, there will be only 21 Million Bitcoins EVER and human greed will make the price skyrocket. Soon, you'll count mB instead of B, owning a full Bitcoin will be hard for the avg people.  Wink

I believe it will work, just wait another 12 hours. If I'm right, this was just a tiny dump, a larger one should follow in about 12 hours.

LOL some people never stop being bearish.
To me, it just looks like profit taking. If you watch at larger timeframes like 4h we're green again.

Back above $1K, and not a single Average Joe around me knows anything more about Bitcoin/blockchain than they did in 2013, or even seems to care.  This is amazing.

Now I know why they call them "late adopters".  I don't blame the really old, the really young or the unborn. I blame the older, middle-aged folks who have money to invest, but are just too plain ignorant or scared to see the financial change tsunami that is coming.  By the time they finally look up, Bitcoin will be well north of $10K.

I remember my grandmother still writing physical checks for everything, 7-8 years after the rest of society had moved on to using the debit card. She finally used one a few years before she died, and I remember the look on her face.... she was blown away at the speed and convenience. Priceless.

I remember me getting on dial-up on the PC in my bedroom, when my parents though I was in there "hacking" ala War Games style.  They thought the internet was and always would be just a toy for nerds.

I remember carrying around a clunky Treo smartphone (which was actually smaller than your average smartphone today), when literally *everyone* had crappy flip phones and thought that smartphones were only for nerds.  Especially the women, lol.

it will get critical at gold parity (1 ounce is 31.1 grams):

http://pricedingold.com/bitcoin/

I like to think parity in terms of ~380 ounces per BTC. That's due to the ratio of 6.1 bn above ground ounces vs 16.15 mn bitcoins mined.

That would require a price of $456k per BTC - but at least the scarcity ratio would be accounted for...

As a side note, the problem with gold spiking upwards is its large marketcap and large annual production levels. At current prices, ~3500 tons of gold per year of new mining output (without factoring recycling) is ~110mn oz. That requires 132bn USD to absorb. A tenfold increase in the price of gold, would suddenly require 1.32 trillion USD per year just to buy annual production. The problem is that there is no such liquidity in the system for allowing this.

On the other hand, silver or bitcoin, can do much larger runs due to their smaller marketcap and much smaller liquidity requirements to buy their annual production.

BTC at 10500$ (10x) would require just 6.9 billion per year to buy the annual production (657k coins x 10.5k usd).
Silver at 170$ (10x) would require 136 billion per year to buy the annual mining output of ~800mn oz.

Gold is priced so high that the numbers involved are too high at 1.32 trillion USD (in a scenario of 10x price) for its 110mn oz. It could happen in a hyperinflation scenario, but then the money one takes wouldn't be worth it anyway. In a sense, gold is constrained from doing a huge run by its large marketcap and the liquidity requirements in the fiat system to sustain prices of 10x+. Silver less so, and bitcoin even less so.

Bitcoin seems to be the best bet in terms of upwards potential because it's so small and its fiat requirements to sustain its rise and mining output absorption are equally small.

Nice analysis.  Cool

What is up with the gold parity and Gox ATH and so?
Just asking.

Gox ATH was an imaginary ceiling, and breaking it is closure. Any holder of bitcoin EVER is now in the green.

Now 1 arbitrary unit of account (a BTC), in a decentralized protocol thought up and developed from nothing more than an idea, is worth more than an oz of GOLD... In <10 years.

Naysayers have never been grasping at straws like now.

Any people here who got their BCH/BCC from their cold storage wallets and sold them already on exchanges?  Grin I wonder if its availeble yet.

BCH is not available for deposits on any exchange that I'm aware of.

Kraken and Bittrex both gave BCH for BTC holders at the moment of the fork, but it's been impossible to deposit BCH from wallets yet.
