It is, sideways trading for a while at this level would be a great spot too build some support at.  :-)  Once you look at order books, 11K 12K 13K+ are very thing right now.

My guess is that these hedge funds might be buying bitcoin themselves, and hence the pumping, with so many green candles and no correction. Then they short it, using leverage to bet on a fall in CME, and thus making more money than a whale might do (due to the margin applied, and the ammount of money, as these hedge funds have millions at their disposal).

The question is: how low could it go, if they succeed? Where should we put buying orders? What would be the dip? And how can we instruct people who are buying now to hold it?

Also, how much would they affect the price, if most bitcoins are not on the exchanges?

Futures will also let large funds go long with ease and not have to worry about the holding and storage of bitcoin.  A big positive many have waited for.  Shorting is possible as well.  CME though limits the variance per day to 20% +/- the previous days close (reference value).  Thus it could go down max or up max 20% in one day for the contracts.  If they manipulated spot bitcoin value more than that it necessarily wouldn't benefit them.

Futures will be interesting to see.  Overall in time it should help here for a while increase price, and then allow for ETFs probably as early as Q1 finally now.  ETFs will then flood $$$ directly into the market directly as they will hold proportionally Bitcoin (and need to buy more, etc.).

CBOE isn't nearly as large as the CME, even if they offer free trading for December.  Next week on 17th/18th is a bigger deal for futures.

Quite amazing that we seem to be leaving 18K in the dust. If we break 21K, this will be the largest rally in Bitcoin's history.

Satoshi is also now #36 richest person in the world with approximate wealth of $20.8B. Cool

So will those shorts in the CBOE futures have to cover them/settle on Monday if the price has popped 1-2K over the weekend?

Man, my BTC are on the paper wallet. How long would it take to transfer them to bitstamp, get my BCC and dump them all?

If you recover that key say in electrum for BCH here now, then transfer then probably all within 15-30 minutes or so, def an hour.

Could this Bcash pump be the final bugle call over the bubbly battlefield?

A fucking massive crash would flush most of this shit away. By the time the appetite returned Bitcoin might actually be match fit for the masses.
The key question is if they make money on this shit, or lose a little more every time.

Sheesh, at this point if BTC drops 40% more and BCH only doubles it’ll overtake Bitcoin in value.  Uh!

the question I have is this

mine LTC....pay my income tax on this...say 25% of what was mined....sell on coinbase....and pay (if less than a year) 40% capital gains tax

but

If I mine LTC and pay income tax on this ...again 25% but xfer the LTC to BTC I am hit with another 40% capital gains because in 2018 it is gonna act like cash

and no like kind?

or did I miss something

(if above is correct now I know why BTC and cypto's are crashing)

in USA

Few people pay tax from there bitcoin holdings. And no it doesn't work that way either.

I am fearful that what he says is close to the truth:
https://dcebrief.com/tax-reform-law-eliminates-crypto-tax-loophole/

No it is true.
http://fortune.com/2017/12/21/bitcoin-tax/

But you would pay capital gains on the gains only when you convert.

Thus if you mine it’s the full value since it starts st $0.  So 20k BTC would be 20K of gains when mined and realized into dollars or another crypto.  Then say ya then have 20k of LTC.  If you trade that again to BTC when it’s now worth 25K in LTC/BTC, then u have to pay short or long term gains on that new 5k.

It isn’t double taxation, but it is now an event that triggers the tax.  Used to be only when pulling into fiat.

I'm not messing with my seed... If TREZOR or Ledger decide to provide a coin splitting tool for this or any future forks (like they did with Bcash and Bgold), I'll claim. If not, my BTC stay put. Not worth the risk.

Agreed, HW wallets probably won't bother if its 1% or less of BTC value. If its 2% or more and they don't make a tool, I might be tempted to re-seed my wallet, move coins and do the split myself.  I honestly wish I could understand the incentive behind the forks.  Seems like so much $$$ just being given away and most of the recipients surely will dump.  Who knows, maybe it's Bitcoin Pizza that will take the crown!  Hahaha, not, my money is on Fedcoin.   Roll Eyes

If you are not paying for the product, you are the product?  Go ahead, move your coins (this goes for your clones as well) We won't track you, or target you in any way.  There is nothing to be learned from this, don't mind the man behind the curtain.

If you move your coins in USA it is probably a taxable event (income at the $280 that BCH hit the world, I think it was) ...spend it also (of course)

I'm going by below IRS guideline and hope they just treat it like stock going up..you don't touch it ...this does not matter ....we probably can prove

from the below that it is a hassle to get this stuff and came out of nowhere ....or at least this IRS plug leads me to believe

(on the other hand the IRS released the 2013 guidelines 10 days before the filing deadline stating capital gains wanted on all BTC spent since 2009 (heh) also the
coinbase where they wanted all 15 million account info INCLUDING passwords....because they caught THREE GUYS using coinbase to hide taxes...so wtf they
literally could call all the forks like BCH income and expect us to pay..doubtful though)

anyway, this gives me a little pause that they are not gonna go after the BCH and other forks as long as you don't mess with them or move them or sell them

(ie to IRS...what? I have $$$ from the forked coin? really?)

IRS guidelines that if you have not sold or moved any BCH you MIGHT be off the hook (remember the source here ...me...duh....I drank the BFL kool-aid..I know zip
this is an example of what I'm doing and why I'm not even looking in the general direction of any forked coins...they can live or die on the vine...I ain't doing zip.)

https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/26/1.451-2

anyway, some modest hope I won't get screwed over...but how I am approaching this...no looky..no touchy...any forked coin...

brad

Movement of coins is not taxable, just when you realize the gains, thus conversion to $USD.  Coinbase just has moves translated to $ amounts in their reports since they can't track outside their platform.  The reporting is totally on you to actually report when you do have the gains.

In the USA, starting 1/1/2018, movement of coins will be a taxable event under the Tax Cuts & Jobs Act signed by President Trump.
Just thought I would put that out.

Movement of a coin isn't, but exchange of a coin yes.  The like type clause was eliminated, thus BCH to BTC and trading Altcoins would be taxable (for any gains only again).

Buying and selling dash is not a taxable event for you? How is that?
Maybe because it's paid with/sold for BTC and not fiat?

Maybe that's his point. Still look as a taxable event to me. Fiat has nothing to do with it.
Yes, it is by the new rules  Embarrassed

Yeah, if your a "coin trader" then will be a big deterrent now, could still manage and make money though off altcoin/BTC trading, etc.

Do you think it will have more of reduction in altcoin trading and investment?  Seems like people may want to get into something larger more stable and sit versus potentially trade in something even more volatile than Bitcoin.  Thinking perhaps in early 2018 or here at very end of 2017 there may be some rush of funds back into BTC.

Yeah, Trezor. My only question there is what happens if they get hacked, and is there a way to run your own trezor server on your own system (so you don't every have to depend on the Trezor company to be in business)?

They provide data/application service for the devices but never your keys.  So they could recover.  But if they did dissapear ever, you need to always write down your private key, i.e. 12 words or more so you could recover to another type of device or wallet.

LTC and BCH to fiat activity.

Taxation is theft.

Sheeeit.

That is a very large tax bill.  I wonder what sort of mayhem and destruction the US gov't will get up to with all that money.

Same here on the taxes, and probably a larger one next year.

Remember if in the USA, you'll get hit with the gains tax 20%+, the NIIT tax (Obamacare) 3.8% on top of that, your state/local taxes on top of that, and you'll probably have to pay a lot more and loose all your deductions as you'll pay AMT taxes instead of regular.

UG!!!!!

Capital gains taxes on digital currencies is not a big deal anyways. It would never kill crypto in the first place.

I don't mind paying 15% returns on 100% gains.

It is better to (when you cash out) be very careful, and pay the full tax, lest the IRS mafia come knocking at your door to throw you in prison.

Just make sure you do your homework.  15% isn't the top capital gains bracket, 20% is.  Also NIIT of 3.8% is taxed on it.  Also state/local tax and your income rate.  Also AMT applies if knocks your income up higher.

Can't stress that enough.  Actual rate we will pay on gains from Illinois USA here is 20% + 3.8% + 4.975% + AMT = ~29%+  (more if you live in states with higher income taxes even)

So if I remember correctly Ripple labs own what 50billion XRP giving them a market value in the $175bn area or rough 3.5 Tesla's, 3 general motors or slightly less than 1 Volkswagen, why buy a Lambo when you can buy the company that makes them.

Yeah, the fact that RippleLabs is like one of the top 5-10 companies in the world explains that XRP is a bit of a speculative bubble at best or at minimum overvalued now.  It is a social media phenomenon though being pumped like crazy.  Isn't even THAT easy to buy yet so it may have a ways to go but needs a good correction or two soon.

Well just woke up and have seen that there is a small dip on ripple and bitcoin is back at 15k. I hope this madness is now over and btc is about to extend its gains.... massively

My base line is that we are still under attack until we get through this weekend and see huge green candles on badger next week.

now looks like it is going back up, so maybe you're right.

We've been in this cycle of slowly ticking up to 15K, OR even almost 16K over hours and days - but then dropping back down to 14K/15K or lower in just minutes... then repeating.  Yawn.   Meanwhile those crazy alts are just shooting up under speculation.  On twitter they read like crazy immature millennial investors in a market cap race mainly.  Very odd to see this.

Ripple on the BBC news.  Seems they got a pump from the main-stream media. Again...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-42541390

I didn't read the article but..

Yes bitcoin is the devil, but ripple is oh so good and great. dipshits.

Seems to me ripple is tanking right now and rally is losing steam, while the badger seems to crave some resistance blood... but maybe its just me

Ripple does seem to be slowing down.  Tron which is silly is still shooting up, huge supply, like 25 cents now.  Made a little off playing with that a couple days ago.

But, overall it seems these altcoins get pumped by a limited group, and then a still limited number of people are willing to risk investment in them, thus their incoming funds is starting to top out.  And without that their growth slows, a little profits get taken, noobies start to worry, etc.  I wouldn't be surprise if Ripple starts to drop now, move into another alt perhaps, or just back to BTC (and fiat since those markets exist).  We'll see if others want to then go back into other alts or just like many, start going back into a more dependable 9 year old Bitcoin...

Are any of these new shitcoins worth any kind of effort to extract? Haven't even bothered with gold yet, and that would still make for a nice vacation if I could be arsed.

not really, the only one that seems good at $150 ish per coin is SuperBitcoin.  Syncing that wallet now and imported private keys into the QT wallet (for a wallet that is clean/empty now on the BTC network, but had coins back on Dec 15th in it).  Should net enough for a small car or nice vacation one day hehe so worth few hours of effort.

K I give up.  What's significant about 1/18?

Shhh. Patience.

You're not gonna tell him about the thing that's gonna to happen?

Well Jan 15th is primarily Wall street firms bonus day for the year, and some others on Jan 31, Feb 15th.  Expectation is to see big spikes from bonus spending on Bitcoin since average WS bonus is expected to be ~$150K this year....

Picked some more up at $13550, seems like a bargain.

So do we expect any action on/around Jan 26th when the first January futures contracts expire?  Opinion?

It is just pissy that this "complete ban" in SK has been rebunked, but news articles from BBC and other sources are still freshly releasing with sensational "South Korean Bans All Crypto" headlines!  GRRRRR....

None of my stop losses got his in this last big dip,  hopefully things move up again.  Those were still going to provide enough gains to be life changing but now I'll keep them and let things move up for more :-)

Nice $400+ leg up. Happy above 14 and buying below 13. Youz a fickle wench bitcorn.

She appears to be setting her sights on that big wall at $15000 on GDAX.

I think we are a while from 15K, lets just hope to stay in the 14K range over the weekend at minimum.

Just FYI if anyone hasn't cashed out their airdrop coins- BCD is going for $33 each on Gate.io right now. You get 10 for every BTC you held. Not bad for free monies.  Grin

Oh, you can claim those now? I did Bitcoin Gold by sweeping my old addresses with Coinomi, what's the process for BCD, do you have to actually install and sync their wallet?

Pretty much just like you did with coinomi but use the wallets in this article...
https://steemit.com/bitcoin/@tiberiu/how-i-claimed-sbtc-super-bitcoin-from-my-paper-wallet

I just imported my private keys from electrum (after moving to a new offline wallet of course)

Easy peasy and you get access to superbitcoin (didn't even know that was a thing lol) too. I used gate.io to sell as they're one of the only ones you can actually deposit to.

Did you have any problems registering for, or withdrawing from gate.io? Do they want ID to register?

Gate.io needs no ID or anything, was super easy and quick.  I cashed out SuperBTC on that site yesterday.
