When buying a trezor, how can you be sure it doesnt get reprogrammed or something on the way here?

I believe there's no firmware present in a freshly-unpacked TREZOR. This means that, in order to be able to use it, you must download the firmware from SatoshiLabs (the creators of TREZOR) and program the device yourself. During this process, a digital fingerprint is displayed on the device's screen, that should exactly match the one shown on the computer screen. After doing all this, your TREZOR is supposed to be tamper-proof and ready to securely manage your keys.

They come with preinstalled fw (or at least they did in the past). But afaik the bootloader is read-only and is responsible to check the digital signature of any fw about to be installed.

could divide the community and be a setback to Bitcoin’s growth. This was
never the goal of Segwit2x.

Digressing and OT I know, but the light pollution reminded me, in 2019 all electric cars in the EU must make a sound in slow speeds! what an moronic idea. When we finally made cars silent they force us to make them noisy again. And it's a very irritating sound too. A by law forced noise pollution.

EDIT: typos and stuff.

Typical EU bullshit. I'm still pissed about them fucking up the vape market. Fucking assholes. Sorry for OT.

Will this affect cars bought before 2019?

As someone who bought their first Bitcoin in 2012 for $20,

Indeed, I can't help but laugh at all the thousands of newcomers who just read r/bitcoin and suddenly think they are scaling experts. That Bitcoin should be able to run a node on every Raspberry Pi in Afghanistan. Yada yada yada. This is psychologically manipulated groupthink. Let's face it - many of the people getting into Bitcoin today are "newbies" who weren't very smart or educated in the first place. But they all like to act like they are, ESPECIALLY when it comes to their opinions on the Blocksize debate - an opinion that was only formed through reddit. Oh boy do they love repeating those opinions, and screaming down anyone who disagrees, like a bunch of drunken fratboys who think they are about to lose their virginity. Only a very small minority are capable of using logic or reason.

It's both amusing and kind of sickening to watch happen.

Anyway, now that the dust has settled and the "1mb forever" crowd has won, Legacy Bitcoin will likely never scale in any meaningful kind of way - Meaning Legacy BTC will never be anything more than a speculator's toy to get rich, a gateway to altcoins and FIAT and a settlement layer.

However, I still fully expect the combined speculator and institutional investor money to take Legacy Bitcoin to 50 - 100K and beyond. However, it will become impossible to move coin at some point on the main chain , with $100+ fees, making a very large percentage of BTC wallets unspendable. At that point, the vast majority of Crypto users and commerce will have already moved to either Bitcoin Cash, Monero or Ethereum. In the long long run, 5+ years, I fully expect either Bitcoin Cash, Monero or Ethereum to become the #1 coin with the highest market cap. It's inevitable now that Bitcoin will never scale - and let's be honest, Lightning Network will either never exist or will never deliver as promised --- which means BTC is going to be stuck where it is now from the scaling perspective, with only a few band-aids thrown on top, likely forever -- unless the miners finally grow a pair, say enough is enough and stand up to the bought out Corporate shills at Blockstream, but I'm not holding out hope for that outcome at all.

It's not about "1mb forever", it's about not fucking up the network due to forking without consensus and RP. I don't give a crap if the blocksize is 1 MB or 2 MB, just the way it was done.

I don't know about you, but psychologically this has been a very mixed bag for me. No one really wants anyone else to succeed, it seems. I think my lips are sealed going forward.

Back in 2011 - 2013, I really proselytized far and wide. I wanted everyone I knew to be able to take advantage of this new technology that was obviously going to change the way money works for all humanity. Free us all from the vampire squid.

But I took ridicule and abuse for my attempts. So my voice muted. Finally, I just stopped talking about it altogether.

As (Torque?) said a few posts back, you can lead a horse to water...

It's been "already too late to get in". Every since. Stopped preaching a long time ago.

Nearly 2.00a.m. here but glad I stayed up to watch the show.  This is truly incredible, especially when we remember how we all felt in 2015 when this place was full of bears.  Congratulations to all.  $10,000 for one bitcoin. WOW!

I'm really intrigued to see how the next crop of psycho bears will approach the next fallow period. In 2014/15 there really was the possibility it was going to nothing. That's going to be a harder sell next time around.

Not so sure about that. When the bear market is in full force, the fear will be high and hodling hard (no matter any logic). But I highly expect to holders to get rewarded again.

The entrepreneur says he's staying away from bitcoin for now, and may look into alternative cryptocurrencies such as ripple - "something with more substance - but only a little more", although he admits that "substance" isn't the best word for cryptocurrencies at the moment.

Who knows how much BTC was involved, wow what a mess. Its occurrences like this that tarnish the crypto industry and give regulators ammo, to some degree anyways.

I think everyone involved in bitconnect lended to the platform itself which guaranteed huge returns (which is what made it a Ponzi). They sold the story as having an amazing trading bot that generated huge profits which is why they could guarantee such large returns.....LOL

Whoever created Bitconnect clearly was going to run off as soon as outgoing money surpassed incoming money which it makes perfect sense that would be about now.

We are going to $4k, but I'm already preparing myself psychologically for $2500.

Sad, because I remember the 1st of August and it was memorable when bitcoin was above $3000.

Nobody is going to buy right now, because it keeps dropping.

Maybe Ifinex is doing this, selling their btc in other exchanges and provoking a snowball effect. They need the dollars to prove the tether is backed by them.

So 2.3 billion worth of bitcoins are being dumped.

I was thinking on selling to buy back lower, but who knows, it can stop right now and come back up.

Do any of you have numbers of how many btc were dumped since this bear run started?

Thinking the same about selling now and rebuy later. But everytime I tried that, it directly went up.  Huh

Did that ONCE a long time ago. Never again. Yes I suck at trading.

Not enough of it.

That's a good thing, IMO. This is the time for for slow and steady gains - like the nearly 90% or so we've seen since the bottom, a couple weeks ago.

Accumulation is happening again. But note that at these price levels, this accumulation could go on for a very long time.

You guys may die of complete boredom in the interim.

But I want my Lambo noooooooooowww!

If you spent around $10k on bitcoins any time between late 2014 and early 2016 at below $500 (let's say average price per BTC was about $500), then you would have 20 BTC - seems like enough for a Lambo.

On the other hand, I think that it would NOT be very wise to buy a Lambo unless you have at least 100BTC (so if you have at least 100BTC, then you would be spending less than 20% of your bitcoin holdings on a Lambo).  On the other hand (I think that is enough hands for now), if you think that you are going to die soon (within the next year or two), then who cares, you need to have funzies while you are still living... and spend your bitcoins and buy the depreciating Lambo - even if you only have 20 BTC-ish or even less.

That's my NOT SO GOOD advices for the day.   Tongue     Wink     Cheesy

20% of the nest egg for a lambo, that's crazy talk. I'd barely be willing to spend that percentage to retire, then maybe lambo if 20% of retirement-money is enough for the lambo. Yes I'm a greedy greedy fuck.  Grin

I think that you and I are on a similar page in our thinking about buying luxury and depreciating assets with proceeds of our bitcoin investment, so I suppose that I am appealing to the more extravagant folks in this thread.  They do exist.

One thing that might need to be sussed out is whether we are presuming bitcoins to be the totality of your investments or what kind of size is th rest of your estate.   Let's just assume for the sake of argument that the bitcoin holdings constitute a vast majority of your whole wealth (at least 80% or more), and then your figure of 20% of 20% puts you at about 4% of your holdings, and even having some reservations about whether a Lambo would be prudent under those circumstances.

I cannot really battle with you on those kind of personal thresholds, because I am likely similar to you in my thinking and probably less than 2% would be my personal threshold, as long as I was feeling sufficiently geared up otherwise to have a decent storage place for the thing and the other lifestyle drama that a lambo would likely bring into my life.. because there is no doubt that spending on a lambo should really symbolize that you have acquired a decent stash of "fuck you" money, rather than you have to stretch your finances in order to be able to fit such a purchase into your lifestyle.

Full ACK to that.
Although I like Lambos, I would not like the attention it'd get me and it's very low on my imaginary stuff-to-get list. Being a depreciating extreme luxery good also lowers the percentage of coins I'd be willing to spend on it.
That said, I currently plan to get a tesla s instead. Cheaper, less-extreme luxery (different threashold) and selling some bcash (ty bcash ceo, lol) as well as other alts brought the strain on my btc holdings down to a comfortable level, so, well, fuck it. Usually I prefer stuff that makes me money but where would be the fun without wasting a bit for fun stuff, right?  Grin

As soul-crushing as it feels for the price to capriciously fluctuate $2-3,000 from one day to the next:

I am still incredulous the price hasn't tested below $5,000 even ONCE since we sliced through it like butter five months ago.

The daily 200MA is still RISING and currently sits at ~$9,000.  Hell, the 100MA is only now flattening out just over $12,000!

The market has more or less ABSORBED all these Mt Gox mega-dookies, like a thirsty sponge, averaging +/-$10,000 for much of the time.

At least this time, once we finally pass $10,000 for the last time and eventually hit a new ATH, HODLers will feel like they frucking EARNED it.

  Cool

There are a lot of new hodlers who jumped on board last year. Going through a market such as this is basically a rite of passage for new hodlers. When this is all over, we'll have a new generation of grizzled, battle-hardened, strong hands.

Grin Totally. People always think bitcoin profits are easy money but they for sure never went through bitcoins bull-bear cycles with the markets icy hand grabbing their balls. Doing nothing isn't as easy as it sounds, and only the survivors get rewarded, the weaklings get slaughtered.

It’s one of the things that living in the UK is shit for, not being able to carry a gun. WHEN bitcoin moon’s I’m moving to the US & will amass a huge Arsenal of weapons for shit’s & gigs.

To wit, this is one of the reasons I legally conceal carry whenever I leave the house. There are enough people IRL that know what I'm (approximately) worth, and I consider concealed (or open) carrying as insurance against a possible $5 wrench-attack.

In my countys news, like an hour ago, they told us that even common objects like a pen are good to defend against an attacker with a knife, can you belive that? Good luck, lol. Can't make that shit up.

Or were they talking about a pen shot from a gun?  Grin

Not yet, might have to give it a go. The one I’ve done twice is called ‘Bullets & Burgers’ believe it or not.

No need to go to Las Vegas for that. Even in my country, despite its shitty weapon laws, you need no nothing to go to the ranch (as long as you don't want to own/carry a weapon). Just make a reservation, drop some cash and grab your gun, no shits given. Unfortunately we get no full autos but we have .50 BMGs  Grin.

If all you have is a pen, it is better than bare-handed.

A pen has about the same cross-section as a knife. If you can grip it tight enough not to slip, it will stab just as deeply. Lack of a real handle makes gripping difficult, and of course there is no ability to slash. But the defensive mindset will be prepared to make use of any available tool.

It might be better than nothing and somehow be useful in the hands of a trained person, but for the average joe, it's GTFO or be done.

Yes, I know that on that distance even a gun won't help, but a pen, that's just hilarious.

If GTFO is in any way a viable option, and you are not risking anything irreplaceable, then GTFO is always the best option. Even if you are certain to emerge the victor.

On that I agree.

Don't worry, these kind of people don't have the balls to buy if it actually goes down to 2k. For them bitcoin is always either "to expensive right now" or "bitcoin is dead".

At the same time they bitch about how bitcoin is easy money, bitcoiners were just lucky, blablabla, yet they fail on making any "easy money" from bitcoin themselfes, it's hilarious.

Most of the ppl in Crypto (speculation) have a very short time horizon.  A days action may seem like a lot.

They find it difficult to see the longer term picture. That is why there is so much conflicting opinion.

A view on price always has the caveat of a time frame.

Its not only that. There is always this menace that bitcoin will be crushed to the ground by speculators, banks and governments, and will never rise again. Everytime someone talks about "regulation" is always posed as a threat, even if it would mean only regulating exchanges to halt crashes like this.

you're too late. you had to send them some bitcoin from the address you're claiming and hand over your ID and blood and even then they'd probably deny it to you. their 'offer' closed a month ago.

They added an extra grace period for claiming until 14th February, then kept all the unclaimed coins for themselves (including Satoshi's million).

To even begin claiming you had to give them an email address and a mobile phone number. After you supplied that information they wanted even more intrusive details from you.

Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could

Of course, the world has not yet seen a blockchain that has been battle-tested, that does not reward the maintainers in a native token. So there's that. What's the incentive?

Unless someone solves this problem in the realm of game theory, it is impossible.  This is one of the absolute foundational pillars for the stability of bitcoin the removal of which would create a sort of 2 legged stool.

...
Will there be a mass realization that blockchain without bitcoin is just a slow, shitty database? How long will this realization take?
...
I wonder about that, too. Most crypto people I know from meat space think some "newer, better" coin will supersede bitcoin, yet most don't know how bitcoin or any of the alts actually work.

What they also don't get is that if bitcoin was replaced by something newer, more shiny (assuming such a thing would exist), then not only would bitcoin be pointless but also the new shiny coin, and every next shiny coin down the line.

It's either bitcoin, hooks into bitcoin, or it's a parasite sucking on bitcoins success.
