The thing that worries me about hodlers (and I was one) is that you aren't going to have much money to help stop the crash because you didn't sell anything at the higher level.

Who's going to sell at the next ALT and beyond?

nobody? Why should someone sell the next ALT?

The first auction pushed the price from $570 to $640
The first auction caused a 50$ drop when it was announced, and a 50$ jump back when it was known that one bidder got it all.  So this time the market just optimized its response, assuming that the outcome would be similar.  Let's see.

Yeah that's quite right. I hope that the sale doesn't have a negative impact on the price...

Really? Who sells 2K coins at market at once like that? The only purpose of that is to try and push the price down.

Bitpay...

BitPay or a greedy trader who wants to play pump and dump with the Bitcoin price. I mean Bitpay would never sell such a large amount of money at once, rather much small transactions because their business depends on the Bitcoin market price. If they would sell it once a day as an example, they could have problems with the volatility.

The price is still unsafe. I would say that we go back to 310$ tomorrow.

The volume on this mini rally is pathetic.

It's christmas...the volume isn't at high because many traders don't trade right now. I think a huge volume is necessary to stop the strong volatility of the Bitcoin price. Pathetic isn't the right word, I would rather say closed.

Another thing to take note of (apart from it's Christmas) is the difficulty chart. It went down 4% and the trend is still ''down''. It seems we somehow found a way to an equilibrium.

https://blockchain.info/el/charts/difficulty

It's obvious that bitcoin miners are minting at very low % of profit.
The bigger ones try to hold as much as they can to seel in "pumps" like the one that we've seen before. The others just shut-off their rigs to don't pay more in electricity than what they really earn.

Could be interesting to have the testimonial of some miners and know if they hold or sell all their minted btc's  Wink

The most miners haven't any profit...only the big mining data centers have a huge profit (e.g. KNCMiner). Maybe they are also responsible for the "pumps" as you said. I think the difficulty and hashrate will grow up really soon.

Unless the whale is Satoshi.

The whale isn't satoshi. Satoshi would never crash his own idea, his own vision. He is a multimillionaire, yes, but what would be the benefit to dump now?

You would need to be drunk to invest in bitcoin at this point, after all the thrashing it's taken in the past year. Interest from the public is lukewarm, and it's failing to present any user case scenarios for success in 2015 either.

Nxt has been pretty steady in its first year.

Now we will see how it does in its 2nd year.

That is basically all one can say.

I hope it continues to develop.

Back to btc,  this year is going to be interesting.

Oh and I have not been posting past month really (because I have a life outside of crypto thank god)
But I see that many of the trolls have been in full flow with their shit all through the holiday period (tbh how sad for them, honestly) but anyways may I ask, did I miss anything of interest, posted by normal real posters that are making genuine contributions? (To save me going back through the pages and pages and pages  of troll shit)

Hope you all had a good Christmas,  New years, and all of that.

It was steady, but I hate such troll predictions like "Bitcoin goes down, NXT will go to the moon" etc.

No, not really. It's basically a feedback loop. unprofitable miners will turn off slowly and gradually the hashrate will follow the price, though there can be considerable lag.

Can somebody share with all of us, at what price level does BTC becomes unprofitable for the miners and they start shutting off they rigs and BTC collapses completely? Is this even possible?

At current difficulty, on 20 nm process and 10 cents per kWh, I'd guess around 200, maybe a little less...

with free electricity around 0.1 dollars i guess

There is overhead such as rent labour cost of miners and upkeep.

The reality is that btc mining is not profitable if the network difficulty and price stay at its present rates.

I have updated the Hardware return vs buying bitcoin spreadsheet.  The link is in my posted history if you want a copy.

I have a feeling that one reason for the low volume volitility may be  due to coin-swap and associated fallout.

If it is not profitable, why don't miners unite each other and ration the supply? Miners behave like faithless dumpers that adds fuel to the fire. Unbelievable.

Probably because the mining equipment and electricity is not free and they need to make some money back from the capital investment??  I would guess this is part of it.

And even if equipment and electricity was FREE some miners would still be gambling that seeing the price drop they would want to sell some before it goes lower and their stash of btc becomes lower in value.

I see a huge wave of miner sales @ eBay coming. Crazy...the price makes me feeling sick Sad

This is true.  Assuming no capital equipment cost.

Unfortunately 99.999% of miners dont have free electricity.

Besides the evil ones who are leeching free electricity from their parents Cheesy

Keep in mind this price drop is when the Chinese are still sleeping. Just wait till the commies wake up in a few hours. I think today is the day we test $250

The Chinese pushed it from 50 to 1100, they can bring it back down just as fast

I don't think that the Chinese are dropping the price so intensive. The problem are the greedy traders + the panic sells now.

So many high profile attacks these past few weeks involving Sony, and outages with Xbox Live, etc.

People hear bitcoin and "digital" currency. Having a website go down for a few hours is one thing... but nobody is going to be crazy enough to entrust the protocol to their savings. And the fact that value has been dropping all year doesn't help.

It's really incredible that we're still over $300 at this point. It's not going to last for long.

I saved your quote from yesterday saying we'll be sub 300 by the end of the week.

What price is the lowest you predict it will go? It's difficult to work it out from that chart.
I honestly don't know for sure.
I would say at least 250.666

Do you think that will be an all time low for this year? Is it too difficult to predict a year in advance?

There is a small chance there will be a double bottom with roughly the same price a few weeks later. So in case you missed the first bottom, that one will be the last.
After that we will never see that bottom again in 2015 and beyond unless cryptocurrencies in general fail or some other pandemic black swan event.

I think the double bottom is guaranteed.

Real panic and despair will only come if the old time double bottom of $55 is broken.

If that happens which even I doubt (and I'm all bear for a long time now) then there really will be blood in the streets.

Never...there are too many people who would buy @ 100$ so that the price could never drop to 55$.
