30-Day Volume (BTC/USD)
Gox: 617.5k
Stamp: 568.6k
BTC-E: 280k
Stamp at ~ 92% of Gox 30 day volume. Crossover soon?
Probably not before Stamp resolves their engine issues for serious traders. Weren't they having major lag during high traffic a few weeks ago?
I think you are correct. During this quiet time, people are poking about on the other exchanges. But when action time comes, they will go with the one they can still get answers from, not timeouts. As far as I can tell, Gox is the only one who is battle hardened in these conditions.
And as far as stamp is concerned, I believe a lot of people use it as an entry to gox, buy cheaper there, sell on Gox... Wait till enough profit made.... go back to stamp to cash out. But I am not sure too many are cashing out. I think a lot are in it for the long run, and are happy to keep both dollars and bitcoins on the exchanges...considering it 'savings/investment' that is already committed for the long haul.

Are you able to get money out of Gox? What's your rationale for selling there?
I am leaving both on Gox. Its the most volatile and can stand the attention when there is big movements (as in the site doesn't freeze up anymore under stress I think).
I intend to buy back in on the inevitable drop, and move the coins back to cold storage... waiting for the next cycle.

I would be very wary talking about public opinion. Wait to a few of the new bloods have committed to bitcoin only to see there $250 dollar coins be worth less than $100 in a month. ( or days even if sentiment changes ).
I think we will know when bitcoin has attracted too much attention when the US Government outlaw it. As in, anyone doing business in bitcoins is classified as a money transfer business and either has to get a licence or quit it. At the moment the wall street bankers are attracting most of the attention of Government trying to recoup some money from 2008 fiasco. But if bitcoin gains too much attention, and somehow is no longer is allowed in the USA, see how strong the coin will be then.
The 'world police' only have to shine the spotlight on bitcoin and tell the rest of the world to back off...and it will be back to competing with all the other alt-coins for under a dollar a coin.
(... ahhh, you guessed it, I want to buy back in )

I think we are back to the 'lets shake out the weak hands' game again. I think there is still a lot of newcomers waiting to still buy in. Plenty of space for adoption, South America, India and the Arab world. I don't know why India isn't registering already - that's a bit odd, given that they are competing so directly with China over space exploration. But it's the Arab world that intrigues me. Bitcoin is halal (permissible) within their culture - not based on usury or interest taking, and they do have an awful lot of money.

People are trading on MtGox because they have no choice now. You can't get your bitcoins out of the exchange. You can't move USD out in a timely manner.
Check this tread for the growing waves of bitcoins '
stuck in the ether'.
I have done a test of 1.1 bitcoins 3 hours ago and paid the 0.001 btc fee to speed it up. No sign of it on the blockchain, but my balance dropped immediately.
So if you wanted to send the coins to your wallet or to bitstamp, you shite out of luck right now. Maybe he will allow it when the coins are back under 100 usd.

The technical support meltdown in #mtgox right now is quite a spectacle to behold.
Is this in regards to people not being able to get fiat out? Or is it fiat AND BTC?
yes it is both. gox is fucking lol.
cant get fiat OR BTC
hahahaha
It apparently is related to mining pools dumping there nice new coins directly onto the exchange. So apparently with minted coin, they need 100 confirmations before they can be spent? So he mixes your transfer out with the new mints, and presto...you are stuck waiting 3 days for your coins...

Ah! That's a pretty good technical explanation really. I just tried a BTC withdraw out of curiosity. Lets see how long it takes.
EDIT: Just got the BTC as I clicked posted. Took no more then a minute. Withdrew 10 BTC as a tester (didn't want it to not work and leave a whole chunk in limbo!)
So anyway, seems like FUD to me unless the amount makes any difference (which I doubt).
Well, I have two transfer that show sent 13 hours ago on my account history, but do not appear in my wallet.

FUD. Tried it for myself. Withdrawl from gox took less then a minute.
Apparently it's random. Smaller withdrawals have a higher probability of working than larger ones.
No real explanation so far as to what is causing the problem.
So 1.1 bitcoins is large? Its not related to amount, it's just luck of the draw when you try to make the withdrawal...if you are tangled up in the 'unconfirmed' freshly minted coins. It runs off Marks special PHP and SQL code.

Gox always finds a way to derail the biggest rallies.
This is true - the crashes of April would not have went anywhere near so low if the MtGox trading engine didn't lag behind for up to an hour when it was really busy - when a few whales dumped their coins.
When this finally crashes if it stays above $100 or even $150 as the new bottom then it will be quite an improvement over April.
I noticed this going the other way. When we touched on 320, then back down to 315. I had a small sell at 318. Checked my history, my sell was still there. So I think the api that i286 is using was giving wrong
info during that hectic run up recently on Gox.
So something to be prepared for I guess. Unless you are a true believer and in it till it breaks $10,000.
Edit: info not into.

Live with coins that are expensive. But history so far has proven it is only temporary, and you still got them at a bargain.

...and to recap on wise words written earlier...
Flashcrash alert.
The rest of the week may be choppy since we are already so much higher than last week. The weekly gains tend to normalize, and I would not be surprised to see Sunday at around 280-300 like we are now.
Retest of previous ATH from the above in the form of flashcrash is probably coming. I don't believe sub-250 territory will be visited edit: except during the flashcrash.
Risk of a change in main trend is low.
Looking forward, it is better to buy now than wait. I would be wary if price goes 600+ in November or 700+ in December, since they may be overextended.
Looks like were hitting some resistance from Americans waking up and getting shaky fingers. Usually at this point I would think we were in for some slowdown, but after seeing how we ate through the 10k wall yesterday I wouldn't be surprised if we were at 350 by this afternoon.
350 today is madness, in my opinion it is quite possible that we see 250 first, (as part of the final goodbye to anything 2XX).
It is already thursday, and in March it was generally the highest for the week. Weekend = crash.
Btw. does anyone know of a reliable leveraged platform for trading bitcoins? Bitfinex I know of. How about
this?

It's unfortunate that new adopters typing "bitcoin exchange" into Google will still see Gox at the top of the search results. That's exactly what I did back in April/May (although I was partly influenced in sending them my cash on the basis that they were the biggest guys around at the time and claiming to have had 80% of the market a few months earlier, a claim which they obviously can't now make).
n.b. I'm now on Bitstamp
It's a pity we can't warn new folk to avoid Mt.Gox. How can they best be warned that they'll get their USD stuck there, so that "I can't get my money back" doesn't become a story which the mainstream media pick up on, thereby hurting Bitcoin's credibility in the eyes of the public/future investors?
Its fairly common in open source to expect a degree of intelligence and hope anyone below it will learn from their mistakes, I'd swear some projects even leave in clunky stuff to encourage folks to learn some coding to fix them. As Bitcoin gets more popular it will go further and further down the idiot scale and owners of virus infected plague pits will loose a lot of coins so for now the rough edges on the ease of use and gox will just singe these liabilities before they get honey glazed and spit roasted from having to be responsible for their own security.
Shesh, Harsh words
stan.distortion. So you are sounding that even a pc is only to be used by the techno-elite. I think the protocol/environment around bitcoin needs to mature to the point where it is easy to use as an iPad.
strawbs, I recommend people start on Bitstamp, and if they feel like being "Mr Monopoly Day-Trader", they can switch to gox with a small portion they don't need 'right away' ( as in, eeek, gotta pay my rent...where is all my fiat ). I think despite some problems, it performs better under stress than bitstamp.

As Bitcoin Plunges 25% On Government Scrutiny, The First BTC "Fair Value" Reco Has A Stunning Price Target
Let’s use a broad guesstimate. One Bitcoin should theoretically be worth 700 ounces of gold or pretty close to $1,000,000, if we adjust existing supply of both to equal eachother. One BTC is currently worth 0.14 ounces of gold. That gives BTC an upside of 5000 times to equal the current price of gold, supply adjusted. Clearly, I and everyone else believes that Gold may well be much higher than here in the next 5 to 10 years, thus versus the US Dollar the upside for BTC could be multiples of that. Now, before you shake your head, simply go back to the chart of Gold versus the US Dollar and just recognise that it has risen 8750% since the 1920s. And just remember that Microsoft rose 61,000% from its IPO to it’s peak. Considering what we know about the world, I personally believe that Bitcoin may well explode in value as more and more people begin to use it. If you stuck $5,000 into Bitcoins and each Bitcoin did go up to a gold equivalent of let’s say, only 100 ounces of gold (not the potential fair value of 700), then at current prices your Bitcoin stash would be worth $3.3m.

I know why bitcoins price is quite high - it thanks to stunts like '
wired' that make our coins all the more valuable:
But in the end, the answer was obvious. The world’s most popular digital currency really is nothing more than an abstraction. So we’re destroying the private key used by our Bitcon wallet. That leaves our growing pile of Bitcoin lucre locked away in a digital vault for all eternity — or at least until someone cracks the SHA-256 encryption that secures it.

More and more am I starting to believe that BTCChina is (for a large part) fake.
- Their volume reports are ridiculous. On the 3 minute chart they have almost exclusively 300 btc per candlestick.
- The whole rise-up at BTC-China seems orchestrated. Every sharp rise is nicely crafted into a short dip which then recovers in order to make others believe that it's safe to buy
And most compellingly
- During the crash the volume stays _THE SAME_ throughout. There is a sharp drop, but no panic selling at all! The volume is constant. This does not make any sense to me.
- Notice how every downward candle towards is also attempted to be caugt immediately - many many intermittent recoveries during a crash. It just doesn't make sense.
It's almost as if the whole exchange is scripted to make fake orders to amplify any movements seen on Gox. Zero trading fees would allow this.
=== I'm just speculating here ===
And no one is convinced of the above post? Seems slightly credible to me if what he is stating is the case.

Shorting = borrowing coins to sell them, in the hopes that the price per coin will be lower when you have to give them back. A "short sell" is to sell an asset (BTC) you don't own, you just have borrowed it to sell it because you anticipate the price to go down.
That's extremely dangerous with BTC, because the price has the potential to double multiple times very quickly, and thus you can face huge losses by shorting.
That's what "shorting" means, but in these forums many people say they are "short" when they have sold coins, which is not correct. What can you expect in a forum where most of people thinks that ROI is a synonym for break-even....
I am shorting my ROI on my coins that I break-even double multiple times...

I believe with all the money on the table at the moment, for those new to bitcoins and on the exchanges, they will jump at the chance to snap up anything below 500. If you have tasted the waters with a 0.1 buy over 700, and saw it go down to 450 shortly after, you will be much less timid at committing when a drop below 500 appears.
For others, its just a case of follow the leader...if enough positive chatter on this forum appears for a while, price tends to correlate.
It was only a few days ago it was so negative... and the slamming against amateur exchanges.
What I find worrying is the fact when big money arrives, we will really be played. Especially if they go the professional exchange route of 'special' orders to allow preferred customers to
jump ahead of the queue in trades.
Only way to combat that, is to buy and hold till ready to realise a few profits along the way.

Bitcoin Was Created By DARPATL;DR bitcoin is a global digital currency, regulation was created in tandem with development and adoption, bitcoin is not and never was meant to be a liberty promoting value exchange. There is no "satoshi". The central banks are already the largest holders of bitcoin. Bitcoin IS going to the moon because of this.

How's that?
We have a long way to go to beat china's ATH
6,989.00 CNY = 1,147.01 USDAll people calling bitcoin a tulip craze don't realize that one of the main differences between both phenomenons is that the tulip craze was not supported by a worldwide digital platform called the internet. I mean the internet seems to be causing a qualitative effect on several phenomenons once they reach a quantitative peak thanks to the ease of interaction the internet provides. Look at the Arab spring, what seemed like a regular discontent or protest that wouldn't achieve much managed to topple whole governments. In my opinion this day and age we are witnessing very nice examples on how quantitative changes lead to qualitative ones thanks to the internet. So trying to predict what will happen to bitcoin using a phenomenon which happened centuries ago without having something like the internet to support it is not very accurate IMO.

And as far as Arab Springs go, A dictator in civilian clothing is still a dictator. There is no real difference in the Middle East, while they are a few hundred years behind following the hijarian calendar. Once separation of religion and state occurs, then we can take another look at uprisings making change. A quick way to accelerate that would be for all countries to close their borders and stop trading with dictatorships. See how quickly things will change then.
And to end on a positive note... waiting for my buy at 790 to kick in...

Almost everyone is a bull here, even during a megadump like this one.... uhm...
Being bearish right now is almost equal to being a retarded. The price recovered after a 50% crash (900-450) and we just had a nice consolidation phase in which the bid side was replenished and the confidence restored.
In the meanwhile, the Senate legitimates BTC and the media exposure is huge. Big money wants in. Billionaires are coming.
And pigs are slaughtered, and weak hands shaken off.
This forum acts like it has no memory of what happened before. Rampion is right, of course we would see a correction right after breaching a significant target. But it is a good lesson to new comers to the wonderful world of bitcoin. You don't see too many posts gloating about they sold at the top and rebought at the bottom. Just, eeek the train is leaving without me.

By the way, studies seem to say fish can remember up to 5 months ago, unlike our forum users.

Excellent snippet. Thanks. Liked this bit in particular:
“
It is absurd to say that our country can issue $30,000,000 in bonds and not $30,000,000 in currency. Both are promises to pay; but one promise fattens the usurer, and the other helps the people. If the currency issued by the Government were no good, then the bonds issued would be no good either. It is a terrible situation when the Government, to increase the national wealth, must go into debt and submit to ruinous interest charges at the hands of men who control the fictitious values of gold...."

well not a psycho, just someone who suffers from a mental illness, which when uncontrolled can lead to severe social dysfunction, as we saw some months ago. The main problem with Bipolar disorder is that the sufferer frequently lacks insight into their condition, which makes treatment even harder.
An excellent movie of someone who suffers from this condition is
Mr. Jones starring Richard Gere.

Of course, totally not related to bitcoins, but movie is so good in my opinion, worth sharing.

I find that whenever i try to follow these speculation threads i always get lost pretty quickly once people start pulling out the numbers/graphs, how did you guys start learning how to read and process all this information and make predictions from them?
The thing is it's 99% bullshit.
Nobody here can predict where Bitcoin is coming.
Ignore all the graphs and drawings. They are totally useless and the people using them are delusional.
Just ask any of those guys if they are a millionaire. They will ignore you. That says enough.
But one thing you can gage is the mood on this forum. And then try to make a value judgement.
I was just eyeballing the i286.org page a few hours ago, and noticed the frequency of red sells vs green buys increasing. Took a screen shot, was about to point it out by uploading to imgur....and the price went from 1220 to 1150 before my eyes.
So no real crystal ball prophecies, but others have said easy money if you want to try your hand at day trading. Sell above 1200, buy back before 1150. Except this major pattern has only happened once so far
in my day today for me.

is there a thread that follows the news about the 90k bitcoin stolen from sheep market?
The
subreddit for Sheep follows the news pretty closely.
I think what the bitcoin bandit could do is syphon off couple of hundred coins at a time, and just dump them on some of the latest transactions addresses to appear in
bitcoin blockchain.
Imagine if you checked your wallet, and found your balance had 200 extra coins. Would you go and find out where they came from and politely return them. Or would you rush to an exchange and cash em out.
And of course, he now makes a bunch of strangers targets for the bitcoin mobsters whose money he stole.

Bitcoin price now is a bit like
Martina Warren looks now, compared to the earlier pic by Sitarow. Still attractive, but not as much.
I succumbed to panic buy sell much earlier on when it started to climb. I have since learnt to be much more cautious and only trade a tiny fraction of my bitcoins.
I think a few people are like myself, as in, holding off any more fiat transfers to exchanges till holiday season over and life returns to normal working week. Going to be an interesting few weeks to see what the price ends up on December 31st. Hoping above 2x266 myself.

This is a bulltrap. Don't try to catch the knife above $200.

Have made large profits recently trading against a user I've dubbed BrM2 on MtGox. Please dump again if you're reading this.
Does "BrM2" imply the trader may be brain dead?
BrM2 = Bearish Manipulator 2. May or may not be a single person, or even the same person. Its a signature of a large trade.
This trader/traders used to dump, and then place bids below in similar volumes to what was dumped. I placed bids slightly higher and eventually forced him to buy my ask.
I like to call these trades, "chomping the
