Here is a pattern I've observed so far:
Anytime mining difficulty goes down, if a person were to buy BTC right when difficulty is headed back up again, they'd make a healthy return. Blockchained is showing a predicted drop in difficulty for the next round, so we should be real bullish in about 3.5 weeks or so assuming that pattern continues.

A gain is a gain no matter what. If you make a gain on BTC and then buy a computer with said BTC, you still pay capital gains.
It's worse than that. Long term capital gains have a preferred tax treatment over regular income or barter transactions. So, you're best off liquidating BTC on an exchange and then using fiat to buy goods.

The exchanges are incurable. Do I really need to do
this?

The issue is ultimately systemic in this stage of the game. Most websites would be foolish to dump hardware to handle the rare bubble spikes that happen. Steady state load compared to bubble load is probably a tenth or less. It's a waste of capital to buy hardware in anticipation that you may saturate it 6 months from now. If you go the scalable cloud computing route (not recommended if you're handling people's money IMO), then you're looking at $7/hr for VMs that don't suck (comparable to a dedicated server, such as AWS m1.xlarge) or $5000/month. This is to say nothing of the more exotic hardware that the big guys like gox are using (violin SSD arrays and so on).
All that said, adoption will drive exchange infrastructure growth which, IMO, has already happened since just April. Gox croaking for a couple hours the other day with the recycled whale order didn't tank the price as stamp, btc-e, and btcchina kept going without even a yawn.

wqho buys GPUs to mine BTC? Also these AMD cards are crazy high? They are like $200 than the ones I bought in Nov and that was when the cards where new.
It's hard for me to buying something if its 50% mark up :/
All these GPUs are mining altcoins. Nobody is dumb enough to mine BTC directly with a GPU. The people with half a brain are using pools that automatically pick coins and (optionally) convert them directly to BTC. The R9 270s are still reasonably priced and you can get a 1.3MH/s rig built for $1000 which will ROI in 66 days.

This. The runup last fall was nothing short of astounding and WAY ahead of trend. Gox just bounced off the trendline on blockchained.com which was actually quite impressive to behold. It makes for good popcorn eating, if nothing else.

Okee dokee, now we have our triple bottom!!! I wonder what else is in store!

I think, technically, the price has to lift above the resistance at the top of the three bounces ($640ish) for it to be a confirmed triple bottom. I am encouraged none-the-less.

I'm fully convinced that it's leverage that's killing us right now. It's way too easy to be able to short after a bubble top. The truth is though, I'd never trust an exchange with any significant amount of coin. If you don't hold the keys, the coins don't belong to you.

Anyone has some correlation between price and difficulty at the ready?
They aren't directly correlated, but in the past couple years, the USD price per GH/s has not dropped much below 3E-07 USD/GH/s. Right now we're at 6.85E-07. Assuming price stays flat until the next difficulty jump, that would bring us to 5.8E-07. That's elevated, but within trend for April-July. Based on the historical floor of 3E-07, price shouldn't drop below $2340 USD.
