When I said back in April (when the price was ~230) that we were going too fast and a crash was imminent everybody told me "this is not gonna stop til 3000!".
When I told you 3 months ago (the price was ~60) that we were going to hit $400 everyone laughed about my TA drawing.
Now we have exponential growth, we increased 235 in a month without a single correction, and you still don't want to believe...

word of advice to everyone....
The Chinese officials are alot wealthier than you might think...
Its going back up again.
It's not about being "wealthier", it's about not being irrational: if the price is extremely volatile, we already reached the peak, and there is a down trend, why would you risk the chance to sell everything now and buy again on the bottom?
I'm expecting more >2000btc drops, are you not?

Alright guys, whats your best guess/advice for a noob trying to figure out when to buy in? Only have $200 in BitStamp...so I'd like to make it worthwhile. Suggestions?
At this moment there is to much volatility, the price can go anywhere. I'm bearish right now so my opinion is biased, but I think it's a very risky moment to buy bitcoins. I would wait three days more.

april ATH was good support at bitstamp. if it breaks 300 be alerted, if it breaks april ATH it can crash, but i think it will not probably break 300 at bitstamp. i would place spare usd bids to somewhere over 300.

Funny the herd mentality. At ~$400 (Gox), we were "going to 1k!" before a correction back to $500, etc. Now, at a 25% discount (and no devastating news, etc.), everyone is too scared to buy. "Going to zero!!!" "Get out get out!!" lol!
What's changed in 48 hrs to make a 25% discount such an obviously bad opportunity?

For example, in 1995, the U.S. House of Representatives held hearings on “the future of money” at which early versions of virtual currencies and other innovations were discussed. Vice Chairman Alan Blinder’s testimony at that time made the key point that while these types of innovations may pose risks related to law enforcement and supervisory matters, there are also areas in which they may hold long-term promise, particularly if the innovations promote a faster, more secure and more efficient payment system.

Can you do a better job of explaining why that SHOULD NOT have happened?
We just had a US Senate meeting that basically legitimized Bitcoin.
Yes I can: Bitmit went bankrupt, Silkroad seized, Wordpress silently stopped accepting bitcoin, some revelations about how nasty is part of the Bitcoin Foundation, BitInstant still and forever down, more banks freezing accounts
The US Senate didn't legitimize anything, what are you talking about??

That's a triple bull trap we're seeing now. Is that even a term? rofl...

I wouldn't be surprised to see it at $300-$400 in a few days, this is my first guess. My second guess is that $500 may be the floor, there would have to be a 10k sell off to get there. I wouldn't be surprised to see that either.
By the way, I have no idea what I'm talking about. However, I have called the last two bubbles within a day or so of the bubble happening. Maybe it's luck.

Interesting. What did you use to illustrate that?
so is that your bot pushing the price up and up and leaving me behind, Vigil? Sad

Very nice illustration actually. So the point is that somebody is pumping the price and then selling to make profit and repeat?
This price manipulation is not good for bitcoin Angry
Thanks. Yes, the force sell-outs on that large dip and buy up and sell multiple times then increase the price and repeat. It isn't good, you're right. It means that there is someone or some group who has enough Bitcoins to manipulate one of the largest exchanges.
if this is true we are gonna have an extraordinary 4 days of no-fees bot rally, sounds cool

Because they're looking at a mtgox chart instead which has a higher 2nd low and thinking "oh this is just like April when it crashed to 50 and then to 78. Now were due for a rally to 900."
This is much more like 2011 than April imo, at this point I'm really expecting to see >200 on btc-e at least.. the only thing that could save the price now is something like PayPal accepting Bitcoin

So far... every down in Bitcoin has been a trap. That doesn't mean this will hold true in the future.
meh, I wouldn't call the crash in 2011 a trap, if you had the HODL philosophy back then you'd lost the opportunity to rebuy at the bottom, and it's not like it jumped quick, it took more than an year to recover...
what makes me really worried about the current b- (may I say it?) bubble is that people who bought now are basically buying because of
le magic money/to the moon!!!1 meme, this is a get rich fast scheme, they aren't truly believers.
I think Q1 of 2014 will be bearish, but after that it will be super awesome: bitcoin will turn a hipster thing and many companies will want to look cool and modern. and use it!

At this point we are above the price before the Dec 17 "crash", so this seems irrational since the fundamentals are still there...

JP Morgan

A bunch of c.......
I already made a thread on this, link:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=459887.0The only useful answer so far:
A few possibilies:
1. Someone creating FUD to buy cheap coins (probably scammed mtgox first)
2. Banks/NSA try to damage bitcoin (but why would they start with mtgox related txs?)
3. A competitor like Ripple, Nxt or Ethereum
4. Mtgox trying to make it look like a general problem (but I highly doubt that)
You need a lot of well connected nodes to be faster than mgox, btc-e, bistamp, coinbase...
Wall street to buy cheap coins?
It makes me laugh to think some of you actually think bitcoin is important enough to be attacked by the gov or the banks or the NSA. Please. Bitcoin is still a pimple on the butt of the world.
This "attack" is just some stupid hacker getting his rocks off. Hackers hack coders code and bit makers make bots. This will only make bitcoin stronger.
Well.. back in 2011 gandresen was invited to show Bitcoin in the CIA, and cryptocurrencies were a big thing for the NSA in the mid 90s.. so it is important enough to have some attention, not sure why they would attack the network though

It's disturbing that talking about red flags regarding the practices of an exchange and a potentially fraudulent currency they have created is considered 'whining'. To me it seems that it's dismissed so quickly because it would mean a (healthy) correction and everyone just wants that quick easy money.
I've read sentiments on this forum that bitcoin is 'too big to fail' now and earlier in this thread someone said something to the effect that even if it's true that bitfinex is printing their own money to prop up the market that perhaps they are doing it out of benevolence... 'too big to fail'? ...Defending a centralized authority controlling market direction? If the community refuses to take this seriously and demand clarity then even if bitcoin reaches $500k it's a failure imo.
Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.
I'm sorry to tell you this but, that's exactly how the Bitcoin community have been for various years already: pretty much nobody cares about any cypherpunk principles nor even if the biggest exchange is printing fiat while the price is going up, this is now exclusively about getting-rich-quick bullshitism. You can even find people telling you to never do anything with your btcs except for "HODLing" them forever, go figure...

It's difficult, because as a Bitfinex user one could think that all those comments are just FUD from shills to manipulate the market, since not everybody is affected right now. I think if something important as that can come out it for sure will be integrated, and i think exchanges who will integrate it first will profit and all the users will switch. I think if the LN is available it won't be that hard for the exchanges to create ln wallet for fast storage and transactions.
Why would average exchange give a damn about LN? Trades are done off-chain, large portion of bitcoin "users" don't even own wallets (buy for fiat on exchange and keep it there), to deposit - user still has to pay miner fee to open channel (so makes no sense), withdrawal fees can be passed onto users (to discourage them for withdrawing).
I don't see any immediate incentive for exchanges to implement LN. They would likely be the last to jump on it, unless there's a massive demand from users, but average traders would hardly benefit from it, if at all (with an exception of arbitrage traders).
Yeah, it's not really on their interest right now. Maybe it's time to open new exchanges that uses LN and are more transparent with their finances, I'm sure that would attract a lot of users

nineteen THOUSAND fucking dollars?
No, actually what I meant was the difference between the trends for the terms "bitcoin" and "cryptocurrency": as you can see in the last month "bitcoin" almost halved, but "cryptocurrency" recovered the same level of searches after a dip. It seems that the interest in altcoins is now less tied to Bitcoin, yet in the market prices still follow Bitcoin.

Serious question. I'm trying to understand the delusions and fallacies associated with the altcoin market. So far I'm still not getting it.
Or if you just consider it a "buy" because you think it's going to get pumped one day, then just say so. Penny stocks see their day in the sun sometimes too.
Most altcoins are just pump-and-dump schemes. But there are a few ones that are really trying to do novel things: see for instance Zcash and Monero (anonymous transactions), or Cardano and Ethereum (Turing complete smart contracts and PoS). Bitcoin is not trying to do those things, and I personally believe that's great (Unix philosophy), but there is no reason why others shouldn't try to develop solutions for a different set of problems.
My last Bitcoin transaction cost me a bit less than 2 USD (at that time) and took more than 7 hours for the first confirm. It was not as bad as those "$25 dollars txs" that so many people were complaining about, but it was not that good either... In contrast, Litecoin transactions cost a few cents and you get the first confirm in a couple of minutes. This is not to say that Litecoin is a better long term investment than Bitcoin, but if one had to pay for anything during a mempool crisis, Litecoin would be a better choice economically and practically speaking. So maybe part of the LTC rally we saw last year was simply due to this.
I believe once SegWit and LN finally get implemented and deployed everywhere, things will improve and maybe even be like in the "old" days for a few years at least. Not everyone shares this optimistic vision, but even if you do, you have to understand that if Bitcoin is extremely successful (i.e. massive global adoption) then tx volume will keep growing indefinitely, and of course fees will follow, meaning that on-chain txs won't be super common for ordinary people. We may see then a zoo of altcoins (in the same way today we have a zoo of gift cards, credit cards and state currencies) being used for different purposes and being traded using cross-chain atomic swaps.

The wild story took another turn April 30 when federal prosecutors announced a grand jury had indicted Reginald Fowler, a 60-year-old Arizona businessman who once had a small stake in the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings. Fowler, along with an Israeli woman named Ravid Yosef, was accused of running an unlicensed money transmitting operation tied to virtual currency trading.
